Turner performed on any and every stage she could, entering and winning several competitions, but it was not until a couple of years later that she was successful.
Yet, despite these tribulations, Beman's church grew considerably during his time as pastor, adding well over a hundred members to the congregation. Beman was widely recognized as a highly capable pastor, and his followers praised him for his leadership and selflessness. Beman decided to resign as pastor shortly after his second marriage. As pastor of the Temple Street African Church, Beman was a Temperance lecturer, anti-slavery supporter, member of the underground railroad, and an advocate for negro suffrage in Connecticut.
During the martial law in Poland, he was the member of the underground structures of the NSZZ Solidarność in Wrocław. In 1989 he was appointed the secretary of the Civic Committee (Komitet Obywatelski) and in 1990 elected its chairman. He worked as a research assistant at Lublin Catholic University (1982-1992), at Wrocław University (1989-1994) and a fellow of the Katolisher Akademisher Ausländer-Dienst in Freiburg (1990-1991). In the 1990s he founded the Polish branch of the SIGNIUM International headhunting company.
In the 1970s Kaczyński was an activist in the pro-democratic anti- communist movement in Poland, the Workers' Defence Committee, as well as the Independent Trade Union movement. In August 1980, he became an adviser to the Inter-Enterprise Strike Committee in the Gdańsk Shipyard and the Solidarity movement. After the communists imposed martial law in December 1981, he was interned as an anti-socialist element. After his release, he returned to trade union activities, becoming a member of the underground Solidarity.

The Rag was an underground newspaper published in Austin, Texas from 1966-1977. The weekly paper covered political and cultural topics that the conventional press ignored, such as the growing antiwar movement, the sexual revolution, gay liberation, and the drug culture. The Rag encouraged these political constituencies and countercultural communities to coalesce into a significant political force in Austin. As the sixth member of the Underground Press Syndicate and the first underground paper in the South, The Rag helped shape a flourishing national underground press.
Taking the name Prime Skrull, the last original Skrull escaped to Earth in the 20th century and later became a member of the Underground Legion. From that point, the Skrulls began to expand their territory. The Deviant branch later split into two more groups, the modern Skrulls and an anomaly called the Dire Wraiths. The Skrulls originate from the planet of Skrullos, and were originally a mercantile civilization, primarily interested in free trade and willing to share their technology with all races they deemed worthy.
Taw Paya Galay and his brothers actively supported Thakin Kodaw Hmaing, the revered "father of nationalism". He became an active member of the underground resistance before and during WWII, first against the British and then the Japanese. Between 1957 and 1960, he served as Central Executive Committee Member of the Internal Peace League, the World Peace Congress (Burma), and the Asia-Africa Consolidation Organization as treasurer, and for the National Committee against Kuomintang Invasion and Imperialism. In 1961, he worked for the China- Myanmar Friendship Association, and the Korea-Myanmar Friendship Association.
Donald Newkirk is a musician and record producer known for his voice-overs on hip hop albums such as De La Soul's Three Feet High and Rising and 3rd Bass' song The Gas Face. Newkirk is also a member of the underground hip hop group The Dix, produced by Prince Paul. Donald Newkirk is also the writer, producer, and singer for songs on his 'Funk City' album put together by Russell Simmons DefJam label. He's also produced the title song 'Small Thing' which was used as one of the soundtracks to the movie 'Livin Large'.
During the Russian Revolution of 1917, he was a leading Menshevik in Kharkiv. He was a member of the Georgian National Council from 1917 to 1919 and of the Constituent Assembly of the Democratic Republic of Georgia for the Social-Democrats from 1919 to 1921. After the fall of the Georgian republic, Devdariani became involved in anti-Soviet opposition. Between 1921 and 1924 he was a Chairman of the underground Central Committee of the Georgian Social-Democratic party, in 1922-1924 member of the underground Committee of Independence of Georgia.
Ottoman Military Academy in 1906 Al-Azma graduated from the Istanbul-based Ottoman Military Academy in 1906 and was a member of the underground reformist Committee of Union and Progress.Provence 2011, p. 213. After graduating, he underwent additional military training in Germany until returning to Istanbul in 1909. From there he was promptly assigned as a military attaché to Cairo, Egypt. In 1914, al-Azma was commander of the Ottoman Army‘s 25th Infantry Division during World War I. Later during the war, he was reassigned as a deputy of War Minister Enver Pasha in Istanbul.

Burr worked as a barber in the city of Philadelphia, and by 1818 had his own business, a whites-only barber shop in the front room of his home. He was an abolitionist, and an active member of the Underground Railroad in Philadelphia. As a free state, Pennsylvania had abolished slavery after the Revolution; it offered freedom to those slaves brought to the state voluntarily by their masters. In addition, as it bordered states of the Upper South, the state and its waterways became destinations for fugitive slaves.

Adam Boryczka (1913-1988) was a Captain of the Polish Army and member of the underground Home Army in the area of Wilno, where he fought the Germans and after 1944 - the Soviets. Some time in 1945 he moved to central Poland and began working for the anti-Communist organization Wolnosc i Niezawislosc (WiN). In June 1954, he tried to escape Poland, caught, was sentenced to death, which was changed to life in prison. Released in 1967, he later wrote a book "Z dziejow WiN", which describes the history of the organization.

He is a contemporary member of the underground indie rock and indie folk musical scenes, and his influences range from older indie artists such as Neutral Milk Hotel, Elliott Smith and Pavement to more mainstream and well known acts such as Nirvana and Bob Dylan. In 2013, Kevin Devine rejoined his previous band, Miracle of 86, for a series of reunion shows.
Maya or Maayatan, real name Masahito Yamazaki (born July 30, 1979)lovely- mocochang.com is the lead singer in the Japanese visual kei electronic rock band, LM.C. He got his musical start in 1997 as a member of the underground band Sinners, before later becoming a support guitarist for musician Miyavi in his support band Ishihara Gundan (Ishihara being Miyavi's real last name, Gundan means "brigade" or "army" in Japanese). While still with Miyavi, Maya and other support members also played live shows as LM.C. Later they were joined by Aiji of Pierrot.
Increased government repression led to a conflict between the Brotherhood's "old guard", which dominated its Guidance Bureau, and its middle generation of leaders, who favoured cooperation with other political trends, a more open internal debate on political issues, a more concerted effort to gain legality for the organisation and a more liberal interpretation of Islam. On 20 January 1996, Hamid Abu an-Nasr, the General Leader of Egypt's MB died. His successor was MB first deputy, Mustafa Mashhur, who had been "an active member of the underground secret apparatus (al-Jihaz al-Sirri)" as a youth.
Chad Lamont Butler (December 29, 1973 – December 4, 2007), better known by his stage name Pimp C, was an American rapper and record producer. He was best known for his work with Bun B as a founding member of the Underground Kingz (UGK). Signing to Jive Records in 1992, UGK released their major-label debut album Too Hard to Swallow to positive reviews. The group followed this with their second and third major label albums Super Tight in 1994 and Ridin' Dirty in 1996, both of which charted in the Billboard 200 and received critical acclaim.
In 1980 - 1989 Pinior was a trade unionist of the NSZZ "Solidarity". After the imposition of the Martial Law in Poland he became a leader of the Fighting Solidarity working in the underground. A leader of "RKS Solidarność" of Lower Silesia and a member of the underground national management of the union – Provisional Co-ordination Committee of the NSZZ "Solidarność"- and since 1986 public Provisional Board of the NSZZ "Solidarność". He became famous for saving the trade union's 80 million złotys from confiscation by the Security Service a few days before the imposing of the martial law in Poland.
Andriukaitis was an active participant in the anti-Soviet underground movement. In 1976 Andriukaitis started his career in politics as a member of the underground Social Democratic movement, participating in their many activities. He was a founder of the University of Antanas Strazdelis, an underground "university", where members of the resistance movement studied works of the prohibited authors, exchanged books from personal libraries and practiced a humanist way of life (1975–1982). The "university" rejected dictatorship, nazism, fascism, autocratic regimes or nationalism and united students by promoting values of democracy, pluralism, multi-party politics, freedom of ideas, philosophy and religion and diversity.
The Distant Drummer was a 1960s counterculture underground newspaper published in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from November 1967 to July 1979. It changed titles twice: from October 2, 1970 to August 12, 1971 (issues no. 105–151) it was Thursday's Drummer, and subsequently it was known simply as The Drummer until its demise in 1979, after a run of 568 issues. It was a member of the Underground Press Syndicate and also used material from the Liberation News Service. Printed in a tabloid format, initially as a biweekly, it appeared on a weekly basis starting in January 1969.
The Free Press saw itself as an advocate of personal freedom as well as a vehicle to aid the anti-Vietnam war movement. Because of its coverage of the Vietnam War and how it became a touchstone for anti-war activists, the Los Angeles Free Press is given degrees of credit for the ending of the War. It grew with the movement and at its peak was selling over 100,000 copies, with national distribution. The Free Press was a founding member of the Underground Press Syndicate, a network of 600 community, student, and alternative newspapers throughout the United States.
He became a member of the Independent Social Democratic Party of Germany (USPD) and was elected town councillor and deputy mayor of Lichtenberg in 1919 but not appointed by the Upper President of the Province of Brandenburg. Thurm rejoined the SPD in 1922 and was elected and appointed town councillor of Lichtenberg in 1926. A member of the underground hip hop collective Boot Camp Clik, Price first appeared on Smif-N-Wessun's 1995 album Dah Shinin'. He would soon resurface in 1996 as one half of the critically acclaimed Brooklyn duo Heltah Skeltah, who released their debut album Nocturnal on Duck Down Records that year. Heltah Skeltah would go on to release two more albums, 1998's Magnum Force and 2008's D.I.R.T.. In the 2000s, Price established himself as a strong force in the underground hip hop community. In 2005, he released his first solo album Monkey Barz, to critical acclaim.
Gärdenfors is most known for his comic about Per-Olof Svensson, the formerly accused, subsequently acquitted murderer of then Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs Anna Lindh. According to Gärdenfors, he had met Svensson during a stay in Lund, and included him in his comic as a subject of mythomania. In 2005, Gärdenfors has had his book Lura mig (Fool Me) published, containing interviews with different people he considers mythomaniacs, and his comments about the media coverage of the event. Alongside his childhood friend Calle Thörn, he is also a member of the underground hip-hop duo Las Palmas.
He graduated from The Lester School and Henry Lester Institute of Technical Education Attached School (), Songjiang School (), and Nantong Agricultural College (). In December 1937, during the Second Sino-Japanese War, he moved to Shanghai with his family to escape the violence, by age 14. In 1938, he started to learn Russian language under a Russian housewife and Jiang Chunfang (), who was a Russian literature translator and a member of the underground CPC of Shanghai. He wrote under the pen name of Cao Ying in 1941. From 1945 to 1951, he worked as an editor and translator in Time Publishing Company ().
With the outbreak of the French Revolution in 1789, Lamourous (then 35) became a faithful member of the underground Catholic Church. She was an important link in the network of ministries and good works that developed under the vicar general of the Archdiocese of Bordeaux, Joseph Boyer. Aside from visiting the sick, teaching catechism, visiting prisoners and helping to keep the clergy in touch, Lamourous, dressed as a peasant, would enter the offices of the committee of supervision and read the list of planned arrests and executions while pretending to clean the building. She used this information to help people escape the guillotine.
Yitzhak Gitterman (1889-1943) was a director of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) in Poland, and a member of the underground Jewish Combat Organization. Gitterman was born in Hornostaipil, Ukraine, Russian Empire and began a career of supporting refugees and other victims of persecution during World War I. In 1921, he was appointed director of the JDC in Poland. He took part in the rehabilitation of the Jewish population and the establishment of welfare institutions. With the German invasion of Poland in 1939, Gitterman left Warsaw for Vilna, where he rapidly set up operations to aid the refugee community.

In October 1966, the first issue of The Rag was published in Austin—partly in response to the election of an ultra- conservative editor of the traditionally-liberal UT student newspaper, The Daily Texan—with Thorne Dreyer and Carol Neiman as editors. (They were actually called "funnels," in keeping with the group's anti-authoritarian approach.) In his acclaimed memoir, Famous Long Ago, Ray Mungo wrote that "The Rag's chief 'funnel,' Thorne Dreyer, exercises an authority that is gentle and decent." The Rag was the first underground paper in the South and the sixth member of the Underground Press Syndicate (UPS).
Tarashkyevich was a member of the underground Communist Party of Western Belorussia (KPZB) in Poland and was imprisoned for two years (1928–1930). Also, as a member of the Belarusian Deputy Club (Беларускі пасольскі клуб, Byelaruski pasol’ski klub), he was a deputy to the Polish Parliament (Sejm) in 1922–1927. Among others, he translated Pan Tadeusz into Belarusian, and in 1969 a Belarusian-language high school in Bielsk Podlaski was named after him. In 1933 he was set free due to a Polish–Soviet prisoner release in exchange for Frantsishak Alyakhnovich, a Belarusian journalist and playwright imprisoned in a GULAG, and lived in Soviet exile since then.
In 1921, Buller became a founding member of the underground Communist Party of Canada (CPC) which united other radical labour activists from Nova Scotia to BC. The three Montreal women became leaders of the Workers Party of Canada, the legal formation of the CPC, which applied for recognition with the Comintern. The Labour College became a launch-pad for the Communists in Quebec among the working-class anglophone community. Around the same time, in 1923 radical militant Albert Saint-Martin also proposed establishing a French- Canadian section of the Communist International in the USSR. Like many of the early founders of the CPC, Saint-Marin's background was in anarchism.
Iacob was born in the region of Transylvania, five years before the area's union with Romania, into a family of Hungarian Jews. His father died before World War II; his mother fell victim to the Holocaust, being killed at Auschwitz after the 1944 deportations. Alexandru Iacob became a member of the underground PCR in the early 1930s, but, after the Second Vienna Award assigned Northern Transylvania to Hungary, joined the KMP, becoming its Secretary for the region. He was in hiding during the entire period from June 1941, when Hungary joined the war on the Eastern Front, until the arrival of the Soviet Red Army in September 1944.
Mielke responded by putting the last nail in Honecker's coffin. He announced that the Stasi had a file on the now-ousted leader. It contained proof of Honecker's corrupt business practices, sexual activities, and how, as a member of the underground Communist Party of Germany during the Nazi years, he had been arrested by the Gestapo and had named names. Officially Honecker resigned due to ill health, but he had been sharply criticized by the party. Although Krenz, 52, was the youngest member of the Politburo, he was a hardliner who had congratulated the Chinese regime on its brutal crushing of the Tiananmen Square demonstration.
The Oracle of the City of San Francisco, also known as the San Francisco Oracle, was an underground newspaper published in 12 issues from September 20, 1966, to February 1968 in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood of that city.Inventory of the San Francisco Oracle Archives, 1966-1991;(1966-1968 bulk) Allen Cohen (1940–2004), the editor during the paper's most vibrant period, and Michael Bowen, the art director, were among the founders of the publication. The Oracle was an early member of the Underground Press Syndicate. The Oracle combined poetry, spirituality, and multicultural interests with psychedelic design, reflecting and shaping the countercultural community as it developed in the Haight-Ashbury.
Warsaw was the biggest city in the Generalgouvernement, so the position of commander of the Warsaw police was the most important post available to an ethnic Pole in German-occupied Poland. Its first chief, (Jan Karski's brother), was imprisoned by the Germans and sent to Auschwitz concentration camp. Its next chief, , was murdered in 1943 by the communist Gwardia Ludowa; 1977 research in the Polish Government-in-Exile archives revealed that Reszczyński was a member of the underground who gave the Polish Home Army invaluable intelligence. After the Revolutions of 1989 many Blue Police officers were rehabilitated, and earlier communist-propagated stereotypes were revised.

Also, the "long-neglected" action directors found in Farber's famous "Underground Films" essay from 1957: e.g., Raoul Walsh, William Wellman, Robert Wise ("a sometime member of the underground"), John Farrow (The Big Clock, 5 stars) and Robert Aldrich (Kiss Me Deadly and Ulzana's Raid, both 5 stars).
In 1990 January and February, Tchoroev (Chorotegin) participated at the protest rally of the democracy-oriented Kyrgyz youth in Bishkek. Then he was one of the main organizers of the round tables with participation of the young Kyrgyz scholars, students and young workers and the Kyrgyz Soviet officials (February – April 1990). In April, Tchoroev (Chorotegin) became a member of the underground political party of Asaba (Flag), and participated at the first ever anti-Communist rally organized by the party on 1 May 1990 in Bishkek. The columns of the rally participants followed by the officially allowed Communist-run columns through the Central Ala-Too square in Bishkek.
Upon his return to Bucharest, the elder statesman Știrbey advised King Michael that Romania would get better armistice terms if Antonescu was not prime minister. Știrbey was involved in the plans by King Michael to depose Antonescu and have Romania switch sides. Recognizing the Soviet Union would treat a post-Antonescu government better that included the Communists, Știrbey together with Maniu negotiated with Iosif Șraier, a Bucharest lawyer who was a member of the underground Romanian Communist Party, about how the Communists could have a member in the cabinet of the new government. It was agreed that Știrbey would return to Cairo to sign the armistice as soon as the king dimissed Antonescu.
In Madison, Indiana, the free black community was especially active in the Underground Railroad from 1836 until 1846, when a race riot in Madison made it unsafe for its free black leaders to remain there. Chapman Harris, a free African American, was a member of the underground network by the 1830s. His family's cabin, about from Madison, was a safe house for fugitives who crossed the Ohio River. Harris's associate, Elijah Anderson, a free-born African American whose cabin was also a station, helped ferry fugitives across the river. Anderson came to Madison in 1837 and guided as many as 800 fugitives before he was eventually arrested and convicted in Kentucky for his efforts.

It is revealed that not only did Damas lose his son, but was the leader of Haven City before being betrayed by Baron Praxis and being banished to the desert. More minor but returning characters include Sig, a spy for Damas back in Haven City who later becomes the new king of Spargus after Damas is killed, Jinx, a former member of the Underground, Vin, whose brain now resides inside a computer and Pecker, Onin's translator from Jak II becomes an adviser to Damas in the early parts of the game.
Pavel Petrovich Pappengut (also Papengut; ; 27 May 1894 – December 1933) was a colonel of the Russian Empire, later officer of the White Russian forces, member of the underground , comrade-in-arms of Alexander Dutov. After the defeat of the White movement in the Russian Civil War, Pappengut settled in the Ili region in northern Xinjiang. There he commanded the White Russian forces, who were known to be the most competent military force in Xinjiang due to their experience. Pappengut fought against Ma Zhongying in Kumul Rebellion in 1931. In late September or early October 1931, Pappengut commanded some 250 White Russians who headed the forces of Zhang Peiyuan moving from Ili towards the besieged garrison in Kumul Old City.
In 1976 Andriukaitis started his career in politics as a member of the underground Social Democrat movement, but later continued his studies by pursuing a degree in history at Vilnius University, graduating in 1984. Andriukaitis was elected to the Supreme Council of the Republic of Lithuania, which preceded Seimas (Lithuanian Parliament), in 1990. Andriukaitis was a member of the Lithuanian Parliament for six terms, from 1992 to 2004 and from 2008 to 2012, and was a deputy chairman of its council from 2001 to 2004. He was a health minister of the Republic of Lithuania since December 2012 until the European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker appointed him to serve as an EU Commissioner in November 2014.
Gu Shunzhang (1903-1934), also known as Gu Fengming, born in Baoshan, Shanghai, was a leader of the Communist Party of China (CPC). In his earlier life worked at Nanyang Tobacco Factory, where he became an active participant of workers' movement, then of the Shanghai Trade Union and finally of the CPC. In 1926 Gu was sent to the Soviet Union (Vladivostok) for training as a spy; after his return he participated thrice in the armed uprisings in Shanghai. In 1927, after the 12 April Incident, he became an active member of the underground communist movement together with Zhou Enlai, held numerous posts and finally became the Head of the Chinese Politburo's security service.
Priest moved to Austin in 1969, where he got his start at the Vulcan Gas Company, a rock music venue in Austin. He worked with artist Jim Franklin and took over as art director after cartoonist Gilbert Shelton moved to San Francisco to become a key member of the underground comix movement. Beginning in 1972, Priest ran a counter-culture art studio called Directions Company and commissioned artists for various clients, beginning with Eddie Wilson of The Armadillo World Headquarters. "The Armadillo Art Squad," with Priest as its most prominent member, included artists Michael E. Arth, Kerry Awn, Guy Juke, Ken Featherston, Jim Franklin, Danny Garrett, Henry Gonzales, Bill Narum, Dale Wilkins, and Sam Yeates.
