Kenji (Yang Ik- june), a mild-mannered half-Korean-half-Japanese barber, is extremely shy and stutters due to a traumatic past with his abusive father. They form an unlikely friendship as they journey their way to become professional boxers and a way back into an unforgiving society.

Holly (Ashly Burch) and Ashley (David Fetzer), both in the midst of individual quarter-life crises, meet by chance when their peculiar activities intersect at the same bus stop. Ashley, in his late twenties, quit his job to travel in search of internal clarity—stopping along the way to visit his childhood home with an ulterior motive to break in for the nostalgic rush. Holly, in her early twenties, is mourning the loss of an immature and short-lived relationship with her restaurant manager who ultimately fired her, leaving her jobless and directionless as well as heartbroken. Both struggling to move on from the past, Holly and Ashley share brief, strange, and juvenile misadventures as they compare and contrast, and commiserate as grown-up children stumbling through life’s final bout of growing pains.

With regard to the classification of shopping malls as non places, more recently an Italian researcher from the University of Bergamo, Marco Lazzari, developed a survey on a large sample of adolescents, and showed that the mall is a place where teens do not meet by chance, nor with the sole purpose to buy something, but to socialize, meet friends and have fun.

Portrayed by Celia Bannerman, Diana, Marchioness of Newbury (née Lady Diana Russell 1883-) is a childhood friend and love interest of James who, taking her mother's advice to 'marry well', weds his wealthy best friend Bunny instead. At a weekend hunting party at Somerby Park in 1913, Diana, jealous and contemptuous of James' middle-class wife Hazel, secretly switches horses on her nearly causing a disastrous accident. In the spring of 1923 James and Diana meet by chance at an illicit London jazz club and have a weekend fling at a cottage in Sandwich as Diana schemes for them both to run away to the Continent to live the life of the migrating rich. Diana's plans are thwarted and a divorce scandal looms; James offers to marry her but confesses that the war destroyed the man she once knew and that he cannot 'get on' with life, content instead to watch it go by.
