The nicknames include "The Andrew" (of uncertain origin, possibly after a zealous press ganger) and "The Senior Service". British sailors are referred to as "Jack" (or "Jenny"), or more widely as "Matelots". Royal Marines are fondly known as "Bootnecks" or often just as "Royals".

Empire Friendship was sold to the French Government in August 1945 as part of a scheme to enable Allied governments to replace shipping lost during the war. She was one of a batch of seven vessels sold that month. the others being , , , , and . She was renamed Matelots Pillien et Peyraut, and placed under the management of Compagnie de Navigation Mixte.

Owona was born in Douala, and made his senior debut with AS Matelots in 2005. After spells at AS Cetef de Bonabéri and Les Astres FC, he agreed to a contract with Paris Saint-Germain on 10 September 2009. After only appearing for PSG's B-team in Championnat de France amateur, Owona moved to Spain and joined Real Oviedo Vetusta on 31 January 2011. Although he did not play with the side due to bureaucratic problems, he was still promoted to the first team in Segunda División B on 28 May.

Woolf recounted in her diary a dinner party at Todd and Garland's flat in Royal Hospital Road, Chelsea, also attended by West, in which Todd wore sponge bag trousers and Garland wore pearls and silk. Many years later (in response to Garland's obituary), the author Nesta Macdonald reported on another party co-hosted by Garland and held at her flat in Royal Hospital Road in 1927. A fan of the Diaghilev Ballet (Ballets Russes), which had just revived Les Matelots, this was a fancy dress party with guests required to dress in nautical costumes. Among those attending were Lytton Strachey and Tallulah Bankhead.

This was one of three eagles known to have been owned by Washington, who most often wore the "diamond eagle," a diamond-encrusted badge given him by the French matelots (sailors). That diamond eagle continues to be passed down to each President General of the Society of the Cincinnati as part of his induction into office. The Cincinnati Eagle is displayed in various places of public importance, including Sawyer Point in Cincinnati (named for the Society), Ohio. A popular public square was built here to house a 15' bronze statue of Cincinnatus flanked by four masts flying the American, state, city, and Society flags.
