He was elected as General Secretary of the Union of Arab Journalists for one year in 1976 and after the headquarters were moved from Baghdad, Iraq to Cairo, Egypt, for more than a decade (1996- November 2008) until the time of his death. Salah Eddin Hafez was also a well-known independent writer with 12 books to his name that tackled subjects of the media, democracy, Arab-Israeli conflict and the Third World amongst others. His writings defended the civil rights of the disadvantaged or minorities, tackled many times issues of freedom of expression and social justice. His weekly articles every Wednesday morning were published in Al-Ahram and concurrently in 5 other Arab publications and was at many a time critical of the Arab regimes including those of Egypt.

One night, when the father returned drunk and belabors the mother Ashok comes out of his room and stands between them and protests against the father. Father gets furious against the impertinent son Ashok and in trying to hit the boy slips down the stairs and succumbs to his injuries, Both mother and son get stunned at the suddenness of the fatal accident. However, the mother gives a different report to the police to save Ashok, saying that her husband had an accidental fall being drunk and tipsy before anybody could help him.

Alexander taught for over 40 years two graduate courses in alternate fall semesters: evolutionary ecology and evolution and behaviour; during these semesters he dedicated all his time to prepare his lecture materials — fresh and up-to-date every year — which included many a time novel, provocative ideas from his own students and university colleagues; amongst which Prof. Donald W. Tinkle, curator of herpetology at the UMMZ and evolutionary biologist, was very prominent until his death in 1980. Initially charged with murder, Ng was sentenced to 3 years and 3 months' imprisonment and 3 strokes of the cane for rioting, the lightest sentence received compared to his other 11 fellow gang members, who were sentenced to imprisonment between 4 and 12 years and caning between 3 to 12 strokes of the cane for rioting and culpable homicide. Tan also represented another of Ng Wei Lun's gang, Chong Rui Hong, who was given 4 years' imprisonment and 3 strokes of the cane for rioting as well.

Scharf was born 22 September 1922 in the US to Irving Scharf and his wife. He trained at Hancock College of Aeronautics in Los Angeles County in 1944 as a second lieutenant, where he gained his 'silver wings', qualifying to fly heavy aircraft.'Silver wings given to fifty county students,' in Los Angeles Times, Sunday, 27 February 1944, p.13 While at the College Scharf used his artistic talents to draw cartoons for the cadet publications. His unit citations were awarded as a result of successful bombing missions over Odertal and Vienna, and it was during his last mission to the latter that flak knocked out three of their B-24 engines and his crew made a forced landing in Russia.
