Kahn believed that the SDS students were "elitist", being overly critical of labor unions and liberals, and attributed upper-class origins and Ivy-league schooling to them, according to Port-Huron activist Todd Gitlin, who observes that Kahn was the son of a "manual laborer". LID and SDS split in 1965, when SDS voted to remove from its constitution the "exclusion clause" that prohibited membership by communists, against Kahn's arguments. The SDS exclusion clause had barred "advocates of or apologists for" "totalitarianism". The clause's removal effectively invited "disciplined cadre" to attempt to "take over or paralyze" SDS, as had occurred to mass organizations in the thirties.

During the 1960s, Jan Křen became one of the first Czechoslovak historians to document and research the expulsion of the Sudeten Germans from the country at the end of World War II. Křen was originally a member of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia from 1949 to 1969, but was expelled in 1970 over his opposition to the Warsaw Pact invasion. He was also fired from his job as a professor and was forced to work as a manual laborer. He became involved with the pro-democracy dissident movement. He was one of the founding signatories of Charter 77 and began holding a series of underground seminars held covertly in apartments and universities.

Peng Dehuai (; October 24, 1898November 29, 1974) was a prominent Chinese Communist military leader, who served as China's Defense Minister from 1954 to 1959. Peng was born into a poor peasant family, and received several years of primary education before his family's poverty forced him to suspend his education at the age of ten, and to work for several years as a manual laborer. When he was sixteen, Peng became a professional soldier. Over the next ten years Peng served in the armies of several Hunan-based warlord armies, raising himself from the rank of private second class to major. In 1926 Peng's forces joined the Kuomintang, and Peng was first introduced to communism.

Born on 29 December 1906 in the village of Tyuntnyary, Perm Governorate, Arkhipov worked as a shepherd while he went through primary school, which he completed in 1921. He became an apprentice at a harness workshop and a laborer at a mill in Chelyabinsk between 1921 and 1924. Until 1927, Arkhipov was a laborer at the Verkhneklimsk coal furnace near Zlatoust, then became a manual laborer at a hydroelectric power station in Chelyabinsk. He was drafted into the Red Army in November 1928, serving with the 24th Rifle Division. He graduated from the school of the 70th Rifle Regiment of the division in Vinnytsia in 1929 and became a squad leader, assistant platoon commander, and platoon commander with the regiment.

As written by Manners, Peg o' My Heart contrasts the snobbishness of the British upper-middle class (Peg’s aunt Chichester) with the good-willed and sweetly sentimental character of the Irish lass, Peg - a commonplace theatrical conceit. Vidor invests the film with a moral facet derived from his populism that champions agrarian self- reliance and political independence. In the film version, Peg’s father emerges as an agitator for agrarian land reform, rather than a disaffected manual laborer as in the stage production. Peg’s superiority to her aristocratic relatives is altered by Vidor, and now originates in her class orientation that holds rural populism as a virtue. As such, Vidor was able to invest an element of his social commitments into an “extremely restricted” cinematic project.

The company man usually gives orders only to the supervisor(s) of the drilling contractor and various service companies, lest he/she run the risk of violating the "Independent Contractor" concept and possibly incurring additional liability (e.g., for personnel injuries) for his/her own company. In the modern era, many company men have a degree in petroleum engineering or some other discipline of engineering with broad experience in a variety of oilfield jobs. However, many others have some of the skills of a drilling engineer but without a degree, and have worked their way from being a "worm" manual laborer to the position of highest authority on the drilling site, similar to a private working to the position of general through a demonstration of competence.

Born and raised in Memphis, TN, Muck Sticky comes from a long line of musicians. His great- grandparents founded one of the first gospel bluegrass quartets in 1929 known as The Wayfaring Strangers, and both of his grandfathers were well known musicians. One was Gene Lowery of The Dixie Four who often recorded at Sun Studios in Memphis, and sang backing vocals for artists like Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Charlie Rich. Between the ages of 16-23, Sticky was employed in many different fields including carpentry, restaurant service, bricklaying, water park lifeguard, and ice cream truck driver. In the year 2000, with the money he earned from his manual laborer job at a local convention service company, he bought an 8-track recorder and began creating his first album. In January 2001, he gave his first live performance at a “Battle of the Bands” concert in his hometown Memphis, TN. Since Sticky recorded all of his music alone, he decided to attach wigs, hats, sunglasses, and instruments to 6-foot tall floor lamps and call them his “band”.

Braceros arriving in 1942 The Bracero program (from the Spanish term bracero, meaning "manual laborer" or "one who works using his arms") was a series of laws and diplomatic agreements, initiated on August 4, 1942, when the United States signed the Mexican Farm Labor Agreement with Mexico. For these farmworkers, the agreement guaranteed decent living conditions (sanitation, adequate shelter and food), and a minimum wage of 30 cents an hour, as well as protections from forced military service, and guaranteed part of wages were to be put into a private savings account in Mexico; it also allowed the importation of contract laborers from Guam as a temporary measure during the early phases of World War II. The agreement was extended with the Migrant Labor Agreement of 1951, enacted as an amendment to the Agricultural Act of 1949 (Public Law 78) by Congress, which set the official parameters for the bracero program until its termination in 1964. A 2018 study published in the American Economic Review found that the Bracero program did not have any adverse impact on the labor market outcomes of American-born farm workers. The end of the Bracero program did not raise wages or employment for American-born farm workers.
