Cody is credited with making Smooth Jazz a household name, giving rise to its nationwide proliferation through the firm Broadcast Architecture, the widely syndicated "The Jazz Show with David Sanborn" and his association with saxophonist Dave Koz. Cody was also responsible for overseeing the launch of the now defunct Satellite Music Network's syndicated "Wave" format. Over a six-year period ending in 1993, the format increased its audience by 140 percent, and from 1992 to 1993, by 67 percent. Listeners were 71 percent white and 28 percent black.

Conduit's price for the St Leger was unchanged at 7/1. The St Leger attracted a strong field including the Irish Derby winner Frozen Fire, who was made favourite ahead of the Oaks winner Look Here, with Conduit starting at 8/1. Ryan Moore chose to ride Stoute's other runner, Doctor Fremantle, who had finished fourth in the Derby, and the ride on Conduit was picked up by Frankie Dettori. Dettori held the colt up in the early stages before making "smooth" progress in the straight to take the lead from Enroller two furlongs out.

After starting the engine with a known setting that allowed it to idle, the air valve was opened until maximum engine speed was obtained. Throttling a running engine back to reduce revs was possible by closing off the fuel valve to the required position while re-adjusting the fuel/air mixture to suit. This process was also tricky, so that reducing power, especially when landing, was often accomplished instead by intermittently cutting the ignition using the blip switch. Cutting cylinders using ignition switches had the drawback of letting fuel continue to pass through the engine, oiling up the spark plugs and making smooth restarting problematic.

After a six-week break Strategic Choice returned in the Grosser Preis von Baden and finished unplaced behind Germany. On 16 September the colt was sent to the Curragh Racecourse for the Irish St. Leger over fourteen furlongs and started the 6/1 third favourite behind Vintage Crop and Moonax. The best fancied of the other four runners were Oscar Schindler, who went on to win the race in 1996 and 1997 and the Michael Stoute-trained Zilzal Zamaan. Strategic Choice was restrained by Quinn in the early stages and turned into the straight in fourth place behind Zilzal Zamaan, Vintage Crop and Moonax before making "smooth headway" to contest the lead in the last quarter mile.

Azamour was made 11/8 favourite for the Prince of Wales's Stakes, and justified his position by leading a furlong from the finish and beating Ace by one and a half lengths, with Elvstroem, Warrsan and Ouija Board among the also-rans. The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, often regarded as Britain's most prestigious weight-for-age race was run at Newbury in 2003. Azamour was made 5/2 favourite in a field which included Bago, Grey Swallow, Doyen and several other major winners, although the absence of top-class three-year-olds was noticeable. Kinane held the colt up in last place before making "smooth" progress in the straight to take the lead inside the last quarter of a mile.

On 3 September Quiet Reflection returned to the scene of her Sandy Lane Stakes victory when she contested the 32Red Sprint Cup and started 7/2 favourite after Limato was withdrawn on account of the soft ground. Suedois, Kachy and Donjuam Triumphant were again in opposition, whilst the other runners were Magical Memory (Duke of York Stakes), The Tin Man (Hackwood Stakes), Dancing Star (Stewards' Cup), Only Mine (Lacken Stakes), Gordon Lord Byron (winner of the race in 2013), Goken (Prix du Bois), Mehronissa (Flying Fillies' Stakes), Strath Burn (Hackwood Stakes), Jane's Memory (Cecil Frail Stakes) and Mr Lupton. Costello positioned the favourite in mid-division before making "smooth" progress to take the lead approaching the final furlong. Quiet Reflection went clear and won by one and three quarter lengths from The Tin Man, with Suedois two and a half lengths back in third place.
