My career has been centered around women of color, and I became known in Hollywood, and really around the world, as one of the first makeup artists that really understood ethnic skins, learned how to really match those skins, be creative in ways to create the colors that just didn't exist.

Model Nykhor Paul called out makeup artists just last season for being ill-prepared to work on her complexion (she joins the ranks of fellow models Iman, Jourdan Dunn, and Brandee Brown, who have all been vocal about the lack of resources available for models of color in the industry), and just today, model Leomie Anderson took to Twitter to voice her own valid frustrations surrounding the issue.

When you think about it, who better to dream up beauty products than those who have seen everything on the market, who've tested the best and the worst and the extremely mediocre, sifted through years of data and studies, met with the founders of the biggest brands in the business, and talked to countless dermatologists and makeup artists and hairstylists and estheticians all in the name of speaking their beauty truth to the masses?

Contouring — using darker shades of concealer or foundation to create dimension and a more defined facial structure — had long been employed by makeup artists, but five years ago, the technique went mainstream, and was soon followed by the rise of the complementary practices of strobing (applying light, often shimmery shades on the higher planes of the face) and baking (applying a thick coat of powder on the cheeks to set makeup and neutralize harsh angles).

While Apple acknowledges that Face ID isn't hack-proof, the company says it's built the face recognition technology to have 20113 in a million chance of somebody else unlocking your iPhone X compared to the 1 in 50,000 chance using Touch ID. Not only that, but Apple says it worked with Hollywood makeup artists and mask makers to ensure that elaborate masks couldn't be used to bypass a person's iPhone X. Before Bkav, a security firm, released its results, others have tried to trick Face ID using detailed masks and failed.
