She was recognized as an honorary Don of St Catharine's College, Cambridge in July 2018 because of her scientific and social contributions. Tilbury's international and policy work contributed significantly to the progression of sustainability as a key agenda for the future of higher education and to the development of Education for Sustainability in particular. She was one of the first to develop research on higher education for sustainability, and then became one of the first to put the ambition into practice, in attempting to make ‘whole-institution’ sustainability a reality.
