Dorena–Hickman Ferry The Dorena–Hickman Ferry is a ferry across the Mississippi River between Dorena, Missouri and Hickman, Kentucky. A single boat takes vehicular traffic across the river seven days a week during daylight hours. Missouri Route 77 connects to the Missouri side while Kentucky Route 1354 connects to the Kentucky side. It provides the only direct road connection between the two U.S. states' mainlands; however, they are indirectly connected at Cairo, Illinois via U.S. 60 & U.S. 62 over the Cairo Mississippi River Bridge and the Cairo Ohio River Bridge, both just above the mouth of the Ohio River.

Portsea Island is a flat, low-lying island measuring in area, just off the southern coast of England. Following an international ban on germ warfare in 1925 by the Geneva Protocol Japan reasoned that disease epidemics must make effective weapons. Japan developed new methods of biological warfare (BW) and used them on a large scale in China. During the Sino-Japanese War (1937–1945) and World War II, Unit 731 and other Special Research Units of the Imperial Japanese Army conducted human experimentation on thousands, mostly Chinese, Korean, Russian, American, and other nationalities as well as some Japanese criminals from the Japanese mainlands.

A few lesser islands are closer, but now provide no convenient island-hopping path by which animal species could pass either to or from major mainlands. Originally called the Pacific Club Challenge, the inaugural event was held in 1999 at the Royal City Curling Club in New Westminster, British Columbia. At that time it was only open to the men's club champions from the Lower Mainlands division of the Pacific Coast Curling Association (one of the precursors to the current Curl BC association). Over time the club challenge was opened to all of the Pacific Coast Curling Association (and subsequently Curl BC) and acted as a provincial club championship. In 2019 the BC Club Challenge became a separate event where club champions from each curling club in the province have a chance to become provincial club champion and represent British Columbia at the national Travelers Curling Club Championship.

Eventually Shaky blackmails one of the leaders into letting him into the sortie, and decides that if he is going to live the rest of his life in the apocalypse, he won't be bored doing it. He feels that the boredom (or having too much time to think about mysteries and the past) could kill him if he doesn't do something about it. While the sortie is on the mainlands, Shaky quickly and unintentionally becomes one of the two leaders among the group, the other being a schizophrenic but well-trained former military Scotsman named Jackson (the insane protagonist of the first Annual).
