Balzac's novel-sequence La Comédie humaine Balzac was fiercely proud of Louis Lambert and believed that it elegantly represented his diverse interests in philosophy, mysticism, religion, and occultism. When he sent an early draft to his lover at the time, however, she predicted the negative reception it would receive. "Let the whole world see you for themselves, my dearest," she wrote, "but do not cry out to them to admire you, because then the most powerful magnifying glasses will be directed at you, and what becomes of the most exquisite object when it is put under a microscope?"Letter from Madame de Berny to Honoré de Balzac, quoted in Maurois, p. 201.

His paintings are often no more than stamp sized and "reconfigure public events (often public fictions or lies) in terms of their visual organization (which, scaled down, seen from odd and unintended angles, are revealed as well-organized fakes)." When exhibited, they are frequently set into the wall of the gallery space to create a keyhole effect and magnifying glasses are provided for viewing. Sheehan also produces large scale works, including collage and mixed-media. Sheehan has been the recipient of many grants, awards and residencies including the New York Foundation for the Arts, ARCUS Residency in Japan, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Residency in the World Trade Center, the Pollock-Krasner, and Marie Walsh Sharpe Foundation Grant.

The greenhouse includes a cabinet designed by Dion that supplies magnifying glasses, allowing visitors to inspect the log for various life forms. Field guides are present in the form of blue and white tiles, depicting bacteria, fungi, insects, lichen and plants that may be found on the log. Visitors viewing the installation in 2007, as seen from outside the greenhouse Dion had hoped to feature one of two tree species for the installation—Douglas fir or Western hemlock—the former for its "mythic presence" and the latter for its charisma, and for being the state tree of Washington. The hemlock used for Neukom Vivarium fell outside of Seattle on February 8, 1996, in a protected drainage basin with old-growth forest.

Units that sit on villages and fortresses slowly recover HP as they do so, which is shown by their outlines flashing green. Other map objects include ballistic weapons, which can be captured and used by one side or the other; treasure hunt points, depicted as hut icons; card discovery points, which allow the player to see which card is in play and are shaped like magnifying glasses; and event triggers, which are shaped like question marks. These cannot be used unless touched by an allied unit. When two units touch, a clash begins, and the two units attack one another in the style of Fire Emblem battles; after the player's unit attacks, he or she will be prompted to begin a Unison.

All three one-act plays included nicknames for their lead characters, to provide Heslip with easy references: # The first featured a kid nicknamed "Whitey" # The second pitted "Blotchy" against "Bratty Kids", whom Heslip thought lived up to their nickname; Blotchy's marks are covered with a long cape she wears throughout, whereas the "Bratty Kids" wear deerstalker hats and carry magnifying glasses # The third had, as its focus, a "Reluctant Boy" These nicknames were all revealed in an installment of Pop-Up Video. The same installment also revealed that Brad Roberts had decided to hum, rather than actually sing, the refrain of "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm" because humming the refrain sounded more resigned to him and that he never wrote lyrics for it.

While attending Husensjö primary school in Helsingborg, Lindqvist was diagnosed with poor eyesight during a routine check at the age of eight, which was later specified by the university hospital in Lund as a degeneration of the retinal pigment, eventually causing blindness. Though Lindqvist continued to attend public school, his visual impairment affected his education and after several years rendered it impossible to read standard printed text. As aiding technology was not widely spread in Sweden at that time, he had to fall back on individual solutions. With the use of magnifying glasses, a typewriter and the help of family members and friends who recorded or read texts to him, Lindqvist finished primary school in 1951 at the age of 15.

Hooke also used a simpler microscope with a single lens for examining specimens with directly transmitted light, because this allowed for a clearer image.

Sara J. Schechner claimed that surviving glassware from the 15th and 16th centuries is far too imperfect to have been used to create realistic images, while "even thinking about projecting images was alien to the contemporary conceptual frame of mind." Vincent Ilardi, a historian of Renaissance optical glass, subsequently argued against Schechner's conclusions based on surviving glassware, suggesting that the present condition of Renaissance glassware is not likely to reflect the optical quality of such glassware when it was new. Ilardi documents Lorenzo Lotto's purchase of a high-priced crystal mirror in 1549, bolstering the Hockney–Falco thesis in Lotto's case. Furthermore, even normal eyeglasses (spectacles) can also project images of sufficient optical quality to support the Hockney–Falco thesis and such eyeglasses, along with magnifying glasses and mirrors, were not only available at the time, but actually pictured in 14th century paintings by artists such as Tommaso da Modena.

Smigla-Bobinski's work has been shown in galleries and museums including Grande halle de la Villette Museum Paris; and the Nottingham Castle Museum and Art Gallery where her work was exhibited in correlation with Leonardo da Vinci: 10 Drawings from the Royal Collection. One of her major works is ADA - analog interactive installation, a large kinetic sculpture and drawing machine. Her interactive installation Simulacra engages viewers to discover hidden images displayed on video screens by using magnifying glasses. Her work has been written about in The Atlantic, Wired, TANZ Magazine, Imperica, Le Journal de Québec, Business Insider, The Vancouver Sun, e-flux, and Calgary Herald. In 2016 she was a Visiting Research Fellow and Artist in Residence at ZiF Center for Interdisciplinary Research, Bielefeld, the Bielefeld University’s Institute for Advanced Study, a cultural institution that supports collaborations and dialogue between the arts and sciences.

These include a claim 35 years after they appeared by Dutch spectacle- maker Johannes Zachariassen that his father, Zacharias Janssen, invented the compound microscope and/or the telescope as early as 1590.

The earliest known reference to foraminifera comes from Herodotus, who in the 5th century BCE noted them as making up the rock that forms the Great Pyramid of Giza. These are today recognized as representatives of the genus Nummulites. Strabo, in the 1st Century BCE, noted the same foraminifera, and suggested that they were the remains of lentils left by the workers who built the pyramids. Robert Hooke observed a foraminifera under the microscope, as described and illustrated in his 1665 book Micrographia: > I was trying several small and single Magnifying Glasses, and casually > viewing a parcel of white Sand, when I perceiv'd one of the grains exactly > shap'd and wreath'd like a Shell[...] I view'd it every way with a better > Microscope and found it on both sides, and edge-ways, to resemble the Shell > of a small Water-Snail with a flat spiral Shell[...] Antonie van Leeuwenhoek described and illustrated foraminiferal tests in 1700, describing them as minute cockles; his illustration is recognizable as being Elphidium.
