Progress was slow and gradual, however, because the Turks in the area were strong and the Byzantine military was not yet at its former heights. Nevertheless, John made steady progress throughout his reign on the Anatolian front, eventually conquering a road to Antioch so that he could keep watch over the Crusader princes who ruled it.

Cloth of Stars started odds-on favourite for the Prix de Condé over 1800 metres at Chantilly Racecourse but sustained his first defeat as he pulled hard in the early stages and finished third to the British-trained Robin of Navan. Cloth of Stars met Robin of Navan again in the Group One Critérium de Saint-Cloud over 2000 metres on 1 November when the two colts started second and third in the betting behind the Aidan O'Brien-trained Idaho. He became a Football League linesman in 1977 and three years later achieved promotion to the referees' list at the age of thirty-one. He made steady progress in his early years but by the late 1980s was becoming a regular top division referee, often handling Lancashire derby games including those involving the big Manchester and Liverpool clubs. He became one of the first Premier League referees in 1992,† shortly after taking charge of his most senior cup appointment - a League Cup semi-final first leg between Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur. His first match in that competition was the 4-1 home win by Middlesbrough against Leeds United at Ayresome Park on 28 August.
Tom Cannon, Isonomy's regular jockey On his four-year-old debut, Isonomy carried 124 pounds in the Newmarket Handicap on 15 April and started 2/1 favourite. Among his opponents was the American horse Parole, who was not regarded as a serious threat by the British racegoers and started 100/15 fourth choice in the betting despite receiving eight pounds. Parole took the lead at half way and drew clear. Although Isonomy made steady progress he was unable to catch the leader and finished second, beaten one and a half lengths. Gretton then challenged Parole's owners to a £10,000 weight-for-age match race between the horses, but his offer was declined.
In the 2014 Kentucky Derby, Wicked Strong, the 6.5/1 second favorite, drew number 20 post position, on the far outside of the field. Jerkens admitted that the draw was disadvantageous and commented that "my dad was bummed about it" but also said that "at least he won't have anybody from the outside banging him in there". After stumbling on leaving the gate Wicked Strong was forced five wide on the first turn and was towards the back of the field for most of the way. He was in tenth place with a quarter mile left to run but made steady progress to finish fourth behind California Chrome, Commanding Curve and Danza.
On 23 July Goodricke was matched against older horses in a valuable seven furlong handicap at Newbury in which he was assigned a weight of 119 pounds. He finished second of the twenty-four runners, beaten half a length by the five year old New Seeker after staying on strongly in the closing stages. The colt was then stepped up sharply in class when he was sent to France for the Group One Prix Maurice de Gheest over 1300 metres at Deauville Racecourse. Ridden by Olivier Peslier and starting a 20/1 outsider he appeared to be struggling in the early stages but made steady progress in the straight to finish second, half a length behind the favourite Whipper.
Four fences from the finish, Cybrandian led from Door Latch, but The Thinker had made steady progress into third ahead of Forgive 'n' Forget, Wayward Lad and Combs Ditch. The Thinker moved into second but made a bad jumping error at the third last and turned into the straight in third place behind Cybrandian and Wayward Lad. The Thinker maintained his position over the last two fences before tracking to the right on the run-in and producing a strong late run to overtake Cybrandian in the last hundred yards and win by one and a half lengths. Door Latch and West Tip finished well to take third and fourth ahead of Wayward Lad.
He proved no match for the mare in the closing stages as was beaten eight lengths into second place. Zarkandar again prepared for the 2014 Cheltenham Festival in the Kingwell Hurdle but after taking the lead approaching the second last hurdle he was overtaken on the run-in and beaten half a length by the eight-year-old Melodic Rendezvous. At Cheltenham on 14 March, Zarkandar was moved up in distance for the Grade I World Hurdle over three miles. On her final start of the season Roseate Tern was matched against colts in the St Leger Stakes and started the 5/2 second favourite behind the Henry Cecil-trained Michelozzo. The St Leger meeting at Doncaster was abandoned owing to the poor state of the course and the race was run a week later at Ayr Racecourse. After being held up by Carson in the early stages the filly made steady progress without looking likely to win and finished third behind Michelozzo and Sapience, with Terimon in fourth place. At the end of the year, the filly was bought privately by the American businessman Peter Brant and moved to the stable of Luca Cumani at Newmarket.
Ridden by Eddery, she was the 6/1 fourth choice in the betting behind Faithful Son (winner of the Prince of Wales's Stakes), Chester House and Limpid (Grand Prix de Paris). She was among the leaders in the start and despite coming under pressure in the straight but made steady progress along the inside rail and took the lead on the line to win in a three-way photo-finish from Faithful Sun and Chester House. After the race Cumani admitted that he thought the filly had finished second, but paid tribute to his winner, saying that "she has always been highly promising. You don't compile a record of wins like hers without being very good".
Zalaiyka raced in second place before "streaking away" in the last 200 metres and came four lengths clear of Cortona, with La Nuit Rose a neck away in third. For her first and only venture outside France, Zalaiyka was sent to England in June and started the 5/4 favourite for the Group 1 Coronation Stakes over one mile at Royal Ascot. After being held up in the early stages she made steady progress in the straight but was beaten into second place by Exclusive with Winona in third. In August he returned to Grade I company for the first time since the Preakness and finished second to Moreno in the Whitney Handicap at Saratoga, with Will Take Charge and Palace Malice among those behind.
On the eve of the Wars of Independence the Comyns were one of the dominant families of Scotland, with extensive land holdings in both the north and south of the country, and political influence and family connections with the crown. Of Norman-French origin, the family first made an appearance in Scotland during the reign of David I and made steady progress ever since. In the thirteenth century they acquired the lordship of Badenoch, with extensive landholdings also in Lochaber, as well as the earldom of Buchan. On the death of Alexander III, John Comyn's father was appointed to the panel of Guardians to await the arrival of the infant Margaret, Maid of Norway, granddaughter of Alexander III.

He did very little criminal work in this part of his career. In 1940 he joined the army and served until 1945 as a Deputy Judge Advocate with the rank of major; he was appointed a King's Counsel in 1943.

Despite his heavy teaching load and administrative duties at Virginia Tech, where he had just become head of a large civil-engineering program, Morris made steady progress on his section of the book, eventually contributing more than twice as much material as Whitcomb.Numbers(2006) p222 As the manuscript neared completion, Moody Press, which had expressed initial interest, now hesitated. The proposed book was a long work, insisting on six literal days of creation, certain to be criticized by segments of Moody's constituency.Numbers(2006) p224 Whitcomb and Morris instead published with the smaller Presbyterian and Reformed Publishing Company, whose owner Charles H. Craig had long wanted to acquire a manuscript that supported catastrophism.
She made steady progress on the outside in the straight without ever looking likely to win and finished fourth behind Ela- Mana-Mou, Mrs Penny and Gregorian. During the 1910s dairying expanded in the surrounding districts, particularly at Mount Larcom and Bracewell, and the PCD made steady progress. In the period 1916 to 1923, suppliers increased from 216 to 502 and manufactured butter from . At the time of Raise a Native's injury, his stable companion, Roman Brother, who had been gelded before the start of his racing career, had appeared only once on the racecourse, winning a maiden race at Aqueduct Racetrack on July 25. The gelding made steady progress before emerging as a top-class horse in autumn. Racing at Aqueduct, Roman Brother won two allowance races before challenging for the Champagne Stakes on October 13.

The Germans were also on the verge of introducing a number of terrifying new weapons, including advanced jet aircraft, which were too fast for ordinary propeller aircraft, and submarine improvements which would allow the Germans to again fight effectively in the Atlantic. All this came too late to save Hitler. Although a September invasion of The Netherlands failed, the Allies made steady advances. In the winter of 1944, Hitler put everything into one last desperate gamble in the West, known as the Battle of the Bulge, which, despite an initial advance, was a failure, because the introduction of new Allied tanks and low troop numbers among the Germans prevented any real action being taken.
Farmers in Starrs Point and Canard began to discuss building a large dyke at the mouth of the Canard River in 1809. They may have been inspired by the three mile long Wickwire Dyke completed near Wolfville in 1808.Sherman Blakeney, Sods, Soils and Spades, McGill Queens University Press (2004) page 62 The Planters at Canard had made steady additions to the Acadian dykes along the edges of the river but a dyke at near the mouth of the river would reclaim an additional 700 acres of farmland from the Minas Basin and save the maintenance of the many smaller dykes along the river which protected over 2,000 acres. A plan was organized in 1811.

JN-25B was introduced on 1 December 1940, but was broken immediately by FECB as the additives were not changed. Most references cite about 10% of messages partially (or sometimes completely) decrypted prior to 1 December 1941, at which time a new edition of the system went into effect and sent all the cryptanalysts back to the beginning. After 7 December 1941, there was considerably more JN-25 traffic as the Japanese Navy operational tempo increased and geographically expanded, and progress against it went better. The FECB contribution stopped until the crypto station could be relocated from Singapore to Ceylon, but CAST, HYPO, and the Dutch at Batavia, in conjunction with OP-20-G, made steady progress.

Veiga, p.133-134 Goga made history in 1933, when he openly demanded the creation of special concentration camps for sorting out Romanian Jews. Ridden for the first time by Olivier Peslier he was held up in the early stages and turned into the straight in ninth place. He made steady progress in the last quarter mile to take the lead close to the finish and won by one and a quarter lengths from the three-year-old filly Dance in the Mood. Four weeks later, Zenno Rob Roy started the 1.7/1 favourite for the Japan Cup, then the world's most valuable turf race, at Tokyo racecourse, in front of a crowd of 119,362. Peslier moved the colt up to challenge for the lead in the straight and he drew clear in the closing stages to win by three lengths from Cosmo Bulk and Delta Blues.
Despite heavy persecution by Henry II, the Reformed Church of France, largely Calvinist in direction, made steady progress across large sections of the nation, in the urban bourgeoisie and parts of the aristocracy, appealing to people alienated by the obduracy and the complacency of the Catholic establishment. French Protestantism, though its appeal increased under persecution, came to acquire a distinctly political character, made all the more obvious by the noble conversions of the 1550s. This had the effect of creating the preconditions for a series of destructive and intermittent conflicts, known as the Wars of Religion. The civil wars were helped along by the sudden death of Henry II in 1559, which saw the beginning of a prolonged period of weakness for the French crown.
Kastoria's first run of 2006 saw her made odds-on favourite, ahead of the Mooresbridge Stakes winner Cairdeas in the Listed Vintage Crop Stakes at Navan Racecourse on 30 April. After racing in fifth place she made steady progress in the straight, went to the front with a furlong and a half left to run and won by a length from her stablemate Virginia Woolf. In May she started favourite for the Yorkshire Cup but finished fourth of the seven runners behind the five-year-old gelding Percussionist. On 1 July the mare started 9/4 favourite for the Curragh Cup ahead of Collier Hill and Mkuzi, a seven-year- old gelding who had won the race for the last two years.
Wings of Desire did not race as a juvenile, and although he had originally been entered for The Derby he was withdrawn from the race in March 2016. He began his racing career in a maiden race over ten furlongs at Newmarket Racecourse on 13 April when he was ridden by Robert Havlin and started the 4/1 second favourite in a ten-runner field. After being restrained towards the rear of the field he made steady progress in the last quarter mile to finish third behind Winning Story and Daqeeq. Ten days later, with Havlin again in the saddle, started odds on favourite for a maiden over one and a half miles on the synthetic Tapeta surface at Wolverhampton Racecourse.
At Doncaster Racecourse on 16 September Stradivarius started 9/2 second favourite behind Capri in what appeared to be a strong edition of the St Leger. He made steady progress on the inside in the straight and finished third, beaten half a length and a short head by Capri and Crystal Ocean with Rekindling in fourth. On his final start of the year he took on older horses again the British Champions Long Distance Cup over two miles at Ascot in October in which he finished third behind Order of St George and Torcedor, beaten a length by the winner. In the 2017 World's Best Racehorse Rankings Stradivarius was given a rating of 118, making him the 90th best racehorse in the world.
Eighteen days after his win at York, Saratoga Springs was sent to France and started the 2.7/1 favourite for the Prix du Jockey Club over 2400 metres at Chantilly Racecourse. After being held up by Kinane he made steady progress in the straight without ever looking likely to win and finished fourth behind Dream Well, Croco Rouge and Sestino. In the Derby a week later he was the least fancied of the three O'Brien runners and started a 20/1 outsider in a fifteen-runner field. Ridden by Willie Ryan he reached seventh place early in the straight but tired in the closing stages and finished tenth behind High-Rise who won by a short head and two and a half lengths from City Honours and Border Arrow.
M-Lolshan (22 May 1975 - after 1998) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He was a tough and consistent middle distance horse who won or placed in 19 of his 22 races. After winning one of his three starts as a uvenile in 1977 he made steady improvement as a three-year-old, winning the King George V Stakes in June and the Irish St Leger in October as well as being placed in the St Leger, March Stakes and Geoffrey Freer Stakes. In 1979 he won the Grosser Preis von Baden and was placed in the Princess of Wales's Stakes, Geoffrey Freer Stakes and Preis von Europa as well as finishing fourth in both the Coronation Cup and the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
Scannell is described as an exciting player with searing pace and is one of many talents to emerge from Palace's academy in the last few years. He has also won the Crystal Palace Young Player of the Year Award 2008. At the end of the 2008–09 season, and still only 18 years old, Scannell was voted Championship Apprentice of the Year due to the outstanding potential he demonstrated throughout the season.SCANNELL NAMED TOP CHAMPIONSHIP APPRENTICE The Football League, 29 March 2009 He made steady progress over the following two campaigns, but missed the first half of the 2010–11 campaign because of a knee injury, that restricted him to 19 outings over the 2010–11 league campaigns although he did manage to score twice in both seasons.
For the remainder of 1989, Petite Ile was campaigned exclusively in Group One races, starting with the Irish Oaks at the Curragh in July. Starting at 14/1 in a five-runner field she made steady progress in the straight to finish third behind Alydaress and The Oaks winner Aliysa, beaten less than a length. In August she was sent to England for the Yorkshire Oaks but looked somewhat outpaced on the good to firm ground and finished third for the fourth time in five races as she came home a length and a half and a head behind Roseate Tern and Alydaress. The ground was much softer when Petite Ile took on nine opponents in the Irish St Leger over fourteen furlong at the Curragh on 23 September.
The filly was then stepped up in distance and matched against the strongest weight-for-age competition when she contested the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe over 2400 metres at Longchamp on 7 October. Starting a 40/1 outsider she made steady progress in the straight without ever looking likely to win and finished tenth, five and a quarter lengths behind the winner Enable. Thirteen days after her run in the Arc, the filly was back on the track for the Group 1 British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes over one and a half miles at Ascot Racecourse. With Moore in the saddle she started the 5/1 second favourite behind Lah Ti Dar (runner-up in the St Leger) in an eleven-runner field which also included Hydrangea, Kitesurf (Prix Vermeille) and Coronet (Ribblesdale Stakes).
In August the colt was dropped back in distance for the International Stakes over ten and a half furlongs at York Racecourse but after taking the lead half a mile out he faded in the closing stages and finished fifth behind Ezzoud. On 3 October at Longchamp Racecourse White Muzzle started a 54/1 outsider for the 72nd running of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. He turned into the straight in ninth place and made steady progress in the closing stages but failed by a neck to overhaul the four-year-old filly Urban Sea. For his final run of the year White Muzzle was sent to Tokyo Racecourse for the Japan Cup on 28 November in which he started the 5.4/1 second favourite but ran unplaced behind Legacy World.
Distant View made his racecourse debut in a seven furlong maiden race at Newmarket Racecourse on 14 April 1994 and started the 2/1 favourite against sixteen opponents. He took the lead approaching the final quarter mile but was overtaken and beaten one and a half lengths by the Michael Stoute-trained Zilzal Zamaan, with the pair finishing nine lengths clear of the remainder. Despite his defeat, the colt was then moved up sharply in class to contest the 2000 Guineas over the Rowley Mile at the same track two weeks later, and started a 16/1 outsider. Ridden by Willie Ryan, he made steady progress in the closing stages to finish fifth of the twenty-three runners behind Mister Baileys, Grand Lodge, Colonel Collins and State Performer.
Martin's start to the 2012 TT Festival saw him competing – in a private capacity – at the Pre-TT Classic races at the Billown Circuit, Castletown. Martin was lucky to escape injury while competing in the superbike race, and was battling for the lead of the race on a Suzuki XR69 with Jamie Coward, when he crashed on the final lap. This again led to reports of tension, as the Pre- TT races do not form any part of the main TT racing programme, and posed a potential injury risk to Martin before the TT had begun in earnest. During the practice week for the 2012 Isle of Man TT, Martin made steady progress – albeit amid rumours of differing opinions with his team's management regarding machinery set-up and the team's choice of Pirelli tyres.
283 Much of the early study of Greek vases took the form of production of albums of the images they depict, however neither D'Hancarville's nor Tischbein's folios record the shapes or attempt to supply a date and are therefore unreliable as an archaeological record. Serious attempts at scholary study made steady progress over the 19th century starting with the founding of the Instituto di Corrispondenza in Rome in 1828 (later the German Archaeological Institute), followed by Eduard Gerhard's pioneering study Auserlesene Griechische Vasenbilder (1840 to 1858), the establishment of the journal Archaeologische Zeitung in 1843 and the Ecole d'Athens 1846. It was Gerhard who first outlined the chronology we now use, namely: Orientalizing (Geometric, Archaic), Black Figure, Red Figure, Polychromatic (Hellenistic). The Domestic Violence Act 1995Domestic Violence Act 1995 addresses domestic and family violence against women and pursuant to the act domestic violence can be charged as a criminal offence. In New Zealand the government has implemented specialist family violence courts and means- tested legal aid services which provide referral and advocacy as well as applicant support and outreach for victims of domestic violence. The New Zealand government has made steady progress in implementing fundamental criminal justice reforms that strengthen victim's rights and aims to provide greater protection for those at threat of family violence – most of whom are women victims of male violence. The social attitudes in New Zealand currently remain an impediment to combatting domestic violence and as such, is one of the major barriers in achieving gender equity in New Zealand.
Saoire made her racecourse debut in a maiden race over seven furlongs at Limerick Racecourse on 22 July in which she started at odds of 7/1 and finished second, beaten three quarters of a length by the favourite Showbiz. Ridden by Fran Berry, she raced in mid-division early on, made steady progress in the straight and caught the favourite in the final strides to win by a short head. The filly was then stepped up sharply in class for the Group One Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh and finished strongly to take third place behind Chelsea Rose and Pictavia.

On his racecourse debut The Last Lion started the 4/5 favourite in a ten-runner field for the Brocklesby Stakes over five furlongs at Doncaster Racecourse on 2 April. Ridden by Franny Norton he took the lead before half way, went clear of his opponents a furlong out before being eased down in the closing stages to win by one and three quarter lengths from the filly Simmy's Temple. At the end of the month the colt started 8/15 favourite for a minor race over the same distance at Ascot Racecourse. The Wesley Ward-trained filly Create A Dream led from the start and although The Last Lion made steady progress he failed by a neck to overhaul the American challenger with Deningy a short head back in third.
Cuddyer was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 1st round (9th pick) of the 1997 amateur draft, but did not sign until August. Cuddyer initially committed to play college baseball at Florida State but waited for the Twins' signing bonus offer to increase from $700,000 to $1.3 million before deciding to go professional. Consequently, he did not make his professional debut until 1998 when he was assigned to the Fort Wayne Wizards in the single-A Midwest League. Showing the tools that made him a first round draft pick and regularly named to the Baseball America's top minor league prospects, Cuddyer made steady progress through the Twins' minor league system and made his Major League Baseball debut on September 23, 2001 after hitting .301 with 30 home runs and 87 RBI in 141 games at AA New Britain.
TMR wrote, > At first glance this game looks like doesn't have an ending screen and > surely doesn't so we had to pick a winning condition and luckily the > designer of the game 'Ian Bell' who was contacted by [audience member] > 'Alchman' give us an answer. He proposed as winning condition beating the > two main missions and having that as goal the rest was figuring out how to > do it. In this manner TMR made steady progress through the NES library, streaming it all live on Twitch. Around April 15, 2016 near game #395 (Might and Magic Book One: The Secret of the Inner Sanctum) a modification to the self-imposed rules became necessary when he learned that another runner was also attempting a full completion of the NES library, but using extra outside help with hints and spoilers, which greatly reduced play time.
During the next two seasons, the Texans made steady progress. In 2003, they started out much as they had done in 2002 by shocking the heavily favored Dolphins in Miami to open the season. No other expansion team had ever won the season opener in each of its first two seasons. The Texans would only improve their record by one game in that season, but after a victory over the eventual NFC champion Carolina Panthers and a tough overtime loss to the eventual Super Bowl champion New England Patriots, optimism was high going into 2004 that they could compete with any team in the league. That optimism soured, however, after the Texans started the ’04 season 0-3 and for the first time fans began to question the direction in which head coach Dom Capers and the front office were taking.
He failed in two races at Saint-Cloud, being disqualified after finishing third in the Prix Jean de Chaudenay and then sweating up badly before running unplaced behind Akarad in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud. On 30 August, Argument was sent to Chicago to represent France in the inaugural running of the Arlington Million, then the world's most valuable horse race, and finished sixth behind John Henry. Argument's final European race came in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe on 4 October when he started at odds on 34/1 and made steady progress in the straight to finish sixth in a field of twenty-four runners behind Gold River. For his final two races, Argument competed in North America, finishing fourth behind Open Call in the Canadian International Stakes and seventh to Providential in the Hollywood Turf Cup.
Sergeant Cecil ran twice as juvenile in 2001, and showed no racing ability as he finished unplaced in maiden races at Kempton Park Racecourse on 24 September and Bath Racecourse a week later, starting at odds of 100/1 on both occasions. In the following year the gelding failed to make any impression in his first four races, running unplaced in minor staying events. After being transferred to the Devon stable of Rod Millman in late summer he showed some improvement without managing to win a race as he ran second twice and third once in his remaining five starts of the season. In 2003 the gelding made steady progress and recorded his first success at his fourteenth attempt when he took a minor handicap race over one and three quarter miles at Sandown Park on 27 May.
The filly was sent to England and moved up sharply in class to contest the Group Two Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot on 20 June in which she was ridden by Christy Roche she started the 13/2 third choice in the betting behind the Musidora Stakes winner Magnificent Style. After starting poorly she made steady progress in the straight and finished second, beaten a neck by the French-trained Tulipa, with Shemozzle in third. At the Curragh Racecourse on 14 July she was one of six fillies to contest the Irish Oaks and finished third, beaten a short head and two lengths by Dance Design and Shamadara, with The Oaks winner Lady Carla in fourth. Despite three consecutive defeats, Margarula was then elevated to the highest class to contest the Group 1 Irish Oaks at the Curragh on 14 July and started a 33/1 outsider in a twelve-runner field. The Aidan O'Brien-trained Quarter Moon started odds-on favourite after finishing second in both the Irish 1000 Guineas and The Oaks while the other fancied runners included Irresistible Jewel (winner of the Ribblesdale Stakes), Mellow Park (Lupe Stakes, Lancashire Oaks) and Red Rioja (C L Weld Park Stakes). Margarula was settled towards the rear of the field as the O'Brien stable's pacemaker Kournakova made the running but moved up on the inside into fifth place approaching the final turn.
British yeomanry formed part of the ANZAC Mounted Division, Australian Mounted Division and Yeomanry Mounted Divisions. With the Imperial Camel Corps Brigade, mounted troops formed the Desert Column. The whole force—known as the Egyptian Expeditionary Force (EEF)—was under the command of General Sir Archibald Murray in Cairo.MacMunn and Falls (1928), pp. 356–358 Murray made steady progress against the Turkish forces, which were defeated in the battles of Romani, Magdhaba and Rafa. However, he was repulsed at the first and second battle of Gaza in 1917. The defeat in the Second Battle of Gaza prompted the War Office to change the command of the EEF, and on 28 June 1917, Murray was replaced by General Sir Edmund Allenby, who reinvigorated the campaign.MacMunn and Falls (1928), p. 368 Allenby reorganised his forces along more conventional lines.
The Queen Elizabeth II Stakes over the round mile course at Ascot on 29 September attracted a ten-runner field and saw Tirol start favourite ahead of Shavian, Distant Relative and Linamix (Poule d'Essai des Poulains) with Markofdistinction next in the betting on 6/1. The other five runners were Green Line Express, Citidancer, Candy Glen (Premio Parioli), Call To Arms and Croupier. Markofdistinction raced towards the rear of the field as Shavian set the pace but made steady progress approaching the final turn and was switched left by Dettori to make his challenge on the outside in the straight. The closing stages of the race saw a sustained struggle between Markofdistinction and Distant Relative with the former gaining the advantage in the final strides to win by a length with the pair drawing eight lengths clear of Green Line Express in third.
Two years and one month after her last victory, La Collina started a 25/1 outsider for the Matron Stakes at Leopardstown on 7 September. The French-trained Kenhope (Prix de la Grotte) started favourite while the other ten runners included Fiesolana (Fairy Bridge Stakes), Chigun (Abu Dhabi Stakes), Caponata (Victor McCalmont Memorial Stakes), Say (Dance Design Stakes), Just Pretending (Derrinstown Stud 1,000 Guineas Trial), Scintillula, Wannabe Better (Ruby Stakes), Lily's Angel (Chartwell Fillies' Stakes) and Magical Dream (C L Weld Park Stakes). La Collina raced towards the rear of the field but made steady progress in the last quarter mile and was in fourth place when Hayes switched her to the outside approaching the final furlong. The filly produced a strong late run, gained the advantage in the final strides, and won by half a length and a short head from Lily's Angel and Say.
Preseli made her racecourse debut in a maiden race over seven furlongs at Roscommon Racecourse on 4 July and started at odds of 7/1 in a ten-runner field. She was restrained by Ahern in the early running and was still in seventh place entering the last quarter mile but then made rapid progress, took the lead inside the final furlong and won by a length from the John Oxx-trained favourite Potentille. On 22 August the filly was moved up in class for the Listed Debutante Stakes over the same distance at Leopardstown Racecourse and started 7/1 second choice in the betting behind the Aidan O'Brien-trained Amethyst who was made the 1/4 favourite. After racing fourth of the six runners she made steady progress in the straight, caught the front-running Amethyst in the final strides, and won by three quarters of a length.
Accompanied by the 31st Tank Brigade, the 15th (Scottish) Division made steady progress and by the end of the first day had overrun much of the German outpost line, although some difficulties remained in securing the flanks. In mutually-costly fighting over the following two days, a foothold was secured across the River Odon and efforts were made to expand this, by capturing tactically valuable points around the salient and moving up the 43rd (Wessex) Infantry Division. By 30 June, after German counter-attacks, some of the British forces across the river were withdrawn and the captured ground consolidated, bringing the operation to a close. Many casualties were suffered by both sides but unlike General Bernard Montgomery, the Allied commander in Normandy, Generalfeldmarschall Erwin Rommel was unable to withdraw units into reserve after the battle, as they were needed to hold the front line.
"Wireless Telegraphy that Sends No Messages Except By Wire", New York Herald, October 28, 1901, p. 4. (fultonhistory.com) Collins returned to doing his own research, investigating, in turn, wireless telephone systems that employed conduction, induction, and finally radio waves. He established a small laboratory at No. 132 South Sixth street in Philadelphia, forming a developmental company that initially was privately financed and did not sell stock to the public."Telephoning: Via Mother Earth Without Wires System Being Perfected", Honolulu Independent, September 4, 1900, p. 4. After doing initial tests within a bowl of water,"Wireless 'Phones First Real Test", New York World, July 21, 1903, p. 12. he reported that he then made steady, although somewhat limited, progress with the conduction and induction approaches, achieving transmission distances of 60 meters (200 feet) in 1899, 1.5 kilometers (1 mile) across the Delaware River in 1900, and 5 kilometers (3 miles) in 1902.
In the same year, the Vulcan Society participated in a campaign to secure the appointment of a black man to the New York City Board of Education. As the years passed and more black men entered the Department, the Society increased its community involvement and formed links with the New York City Police Department "Guardians", who were attempting to gain recognition as an official Police Department Fraternal Organization. Other civic involvement included submission of proposed amendments to the Multiple Dwelling Law in 1947 directed to the prevention of loss of life in tenement fires. In addition, basketball games were organized between the Vulcan Society and the Guardian Society, the proceeds of which were donated, $1,200 in 1948 and, $10,000 in 1949 to Sydenham Hospital in Harlem. Throughout the 1950s the Society made steady progress by adding more members and more officers to its membership rolls.
After racing in fourth place she made steady progress in the straight, caught Atasari in the final strides and won by a neck. Two weeks after her win at Leopardstown Bethrah started a 16/1 outsider in a nineteen-runner field for the Irish 1000 Guineas on good to firm ground at the Curragh. The British- trained filly Music Show started the 3/1 favourite ahead of Gile Na Greine (third in the 1000 Guineas) and Lolly For Dolly (Athasi Stakes) while the other runners included Lillie Langtry, Anna Salai (Prix de la Grotte), Termagant (Moyglare Stud Stakes), Lady Springbank (C L Weld Park Stakes, Leopardstown 1,000 Guineas Trial Stakes), Song of My Heart (Blenheim Stakes) and Atasari. The pacemakers Full of Hope and Queen of Troy made the running before Anna Salai went to the front a furlong and a half from the finish.

Román (left) with Ki Bo-bae and Mariana Avitia during the women's individual medal ceremony at the 2012 Summer Olympics Román was selected to compete at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, entering both the women's individual and women's team events with Avitia and Valencia. After scoring 658 points in the 72-arrow ranking round Román was seeded eleventh for the elimination rounds of the individual event, and her score combined with those of Avitia and Valencia earned Mexico the fourth seed for the team competition. Although Román and her teammates were eliminated from the team event at the quarter-final stage by Japan, she made steady progress in the individual event, winning her first four matches to set up a semi-final against Avitia, who had delivered an upset against South Korea's Lee Sung-jin in the quarter- finals. Their encounter ensured Mexico its first Olympic archery medal with the winner guaranteed at least a silver medal by contesting the final.
Examples include White (Cleveland), Eclipse (Easton, Massachusetts), Cotta (Lanark, Illinois), Crouch (New Brighton, Pennsylvania), Hood (Danvers, Massachusetts, lasted just one month), Kidder (New Haven, Connecticut), Century (Syracuse, New York) and Skene (Lewiston, Maine, the company built everything but the tires). By 1903, 43 of them were gone and by the end of 1910 of those companies that were started in the decade those left were White which lasted to 1911, Conrad which lasted to 1924, Turner-Miesse of England which lasted to 1913, Morriss to 1912, Doble to 1930, Rutherford to 1912, and Pearson-Cox to 1916. Assembly line mass production by Henry Ford dramatically reduced the cost of owning a conventional automobile, was also a strong factor in the steam car's demise as the Model T was both cheap and reliable. Additionally, during the 'heyday' of steam cars, the internal combustion engine made steady gains in efficiency, matching and then surpassing the efficiency of a steam engine when the weight of a boiler is factored in.
She led soon after the start and after being headed by the Aidan O'Brien-trained Laburnum inside the final furlong she rallied to reagin the advantage and won by a neck. The Irish Oaks run behind closed doors over one and a half miles at the Curragh two weeks after her win at Naas saw Even So stepped up to the highest class and start at odds of 10/1 in and eight-runner field. The civil rights movement (1896–1954) was a long, primarily nonviolent series of events to bring full civil rights and equality under the law to all Americans. The era has had a lasting impact on American society – in its tactics, the increased social and legal acceptance of civil rights, and in its exposure of the prevalence and cost of racism. Two US Supreme Court decisions in particular serve as milestones of the movement: Plessy v Ferguson, which upheld "separate but equal" racial segregation as constitutional doctrine; and Brown v Board of Education, which overturned Plessy. This was an era of new beginnings, in which some movements, such as Marcus Garvey's Universal Negro Improvement Association, were very successful but left little lasting legacy; while others, such as the NAACP's legal assault on state-sponsored segregation, achieved modest results in its early years but made steady progress on voter rights and gradually built to key victories, including in Sweatt v Painter (1950) and Brown.
The flat racing season in England was disrupted by the COVID-19 Pandemic and the 1000 Guineas was run a month later than usual on 7 June over the Rowley mile at Newmarket. Quadrilateral headed the betting with Love (ridden by Moore) starting the 4/1 joint second favourite alongside Millisle while the other twelve runners included Raffle Prize (Queen Mary Stakes), Cloak of Spirits, Boomer (Prestige Stakes), Under The Stars and Summer Romance (Empress Stakes). In rainy conditions the fillies raced on the far side of the wide, straight course with Cloak of Sprits setting the pace and Love settling in mid division to the left of the leaders towards the centre of the track. Love made steady progress approaching the last quarter mile, went to the front a furlong out and drew right away in the closing stages to win by four and a quarter lengths from Cloak of Spirits with Quadrilateral a head away in third place.
As of January, 1943, the division had about 50 percent personnel of Kazakh and Uzbek nationality, while the remainder were split between Yakut and Russian. When Don Front began its offensive to reduce the Stalingrad pocket on January 10 the 252nd had returned to 65th Army and was in the Army's reserves. During the first two days the Army's main forces made steady progress against the much-weakened VIII Corps and XIV Panzer Corps. General Batov committed the division on January 12, to the right of the 304th Division, and it soon found a gap between the two German corps, reaching the west bank of the Rossoshka River and cutting the withdrawal route of the 29th Motorized Division. It also assisted the 173rd Rifle and 51st Guards Rifle Divisions in a southward thrust of which reached to within of Karpovka by nightfall. Red Army mortarmen firing at German positions during Operation Ring, late January The following day the 252nd, along with the 173rd, was again transferred to 21st Army, which was facing weaker opposition than the 65th.
Doricles' owner Leopold de Rothschild On 1 May 1901 Doricles made his three-year-old debut in the 2000 Guineas over the Rowley mile at Nemarket and started second favourite behind Veles at odds of 4/1. After racing the leaders for most of the way he made steady headway in the last quarter mile, but was never able to get on terms with the 33/1 outsider Handicapper and finished second, beaten two lengths with Osboch in third. Two weeks later at the next Newmarket meeting the colt was moved up in distance for the Newmarket Stakes over ten furlongs and finished second, beaten a head by William the Third, with the 1000 Guineas winner Aida in third, after what was described as "one of the finest struggles ever seen". In the Epsom Derby over one and a half miles on 5 June Doricles came home seventh of the twenty- five runners behind Volodyovski. On 23 July at Liverpool the colt started 5/2 favourite for the eleven furlong Saint George Stakes, but was beaten a length into second place by Fortunatus.
Having found the track clear, it returned to the regiment, which was detained by the task before it until 22 January. On the morning of 18 January, the 2/9th Battalion approached Sanananda village through swamp from the southwest. This unlikely approach was not strongly defended and the village fell by 1:00 pm. The battalion then cleared Sanananda Point and east to the Giruwa River before nightfall. The 127th Infantry Regiment, having paused at Konombi Creek recommenced its advance on 16 January and made steady progress, taking Giruwa on 21 January and linked with the Australians already on the Giruwa River. By the evening of 17 January, the 2/12th Battalion was astride the Sanananda Track and had linked with 'A' Company of the 2/10th Battalion that had been directed to patrol to the track from Killerton village earlier. On 18 January, it advanced north toward Sanananda but the battalion met determined resistance that could not be overcome that day despite three attacks. On 19 January, positions on the western side of the track were taken by 'A' Company of the 2/10th Battalion, who were detached temporarily to the 2/12th Battalion.
In a campaign that had its highs, notably in the form of victories against AFC Totton, Cambridge City and eventual champions Brackley, Hitchin eventually finished 14th. Similarly, Frendo's 44 goals in 48 appearances during the 2012-13 campaign not only helped Hitchin to a 13th-place finish in the league but won him the award of Non-League's top scorer, beating Altrincham's Damian Reeves by 1 goal. His hat-trick on the last day of the season away to Bedford meant Frendo had scored over 100 goals for Hitchin in 3 seasons. At the end of that season, manager Carl Williams stepped down. Former player Mark Burke was appointed manager in the summer of 2013 and the previous side almost entirely moved on. Despite this Burke and his assistant Adam Parker recruited some new young talent and finished in a creditable 13th position. Hitchin Town have made steady progress in the Southern League Premier Division in the last 5 seasons. They have finished 14th, 13th, 13th and 9th, before reaching a best-ever position in the league of 3rd in 2015-16. This saw them qualify for the play- offs but they lost their semi-final at Top Field 3-2 to Hungerford Town, having held a 2-0 lead in front of a crowd of 1305.
After returning from maternity leave, Fraser-Pryce (centre) won an unprecedented fourth 100 m world title in 10.71 s, becoming the fastest mother in history. After ending her 2018 season ranked 10th in the world in the 100 m, Fraser-Pryce made steady progress with her training into the 2019 season. At the Jamaican Championships in June, she again finished second to Elaine Thompson in both the 100 m and the 200 m. Although Thompson won by a comfortable margin in the 200 m, the 100 m final ended with both sprinters sharing the world-leading time of 10.73 s, and Thompson declared the winner in a photo finish. Fraser-Pryce’s 10.73 s in this race became the fastest non-winning time in history. Fraser-Pryce returned to the top of women's sprinting for the remainder of the 2019 season, running at close to personal best times in the 100 m, and recording three of the five fastest times of the year. In August, she won 200 m gold at the 2019 Pan American Games, setting a new championship record of 22.43 s (she did not contest the 100 m). However, after losing to Thompson at the Jamaican Championships in June, the two did not meet until the 2019 Doha World Championships, in one of the event's most highly anticipated showdowns.
