In Russian folklore, Sirin was mixed with the revered religious writer Saint Ephrem the Syrian. Thus, peasant lyrists such as Nikolay Klyuev often used Sirin as a synonym for poet.

The major changes were the modernisation of the texts (particularly the use of inclusive language), the removal of hymns that had fallen out of use, and the addition of more modern musical settings, worship songs and psalm settings. The earliest reference to the word is the Mycenaean Greek ru-ra- ta-e, meaning "lyrists" and written in the Linear B script.Palaeolexicon, word study tool of ancient languages. In classical Greek, the word "lyre" could either refer specifically to an amateur instrument, which is a smaller version of the professional cithara and eastern-Aegean barbiton, or "lyre" can refer generally to all three instruments as a family. The English word comes via Latin from the Greek.

He argued for a renewal of Norwegian poetry, and spread knowledge of foreign literature through translations of English modernist writers like T.S.Eliot. In the mid-1950s, Brekke participated in the debate on lyrical form, and opposed André Bjerke and Arnulf Øverland in the so-called Glossolalia debate. Among the established lyrists, Olav H. Hauge transitioned to modernistic and concretist poetry and enjoyed a renaissance, especially with his collection entitled Dropar in austavind, which inspired other, younger Norwegian poets, such as Jan Erik Vold. After a short period the Profil group went separate routes, as authors such as Dag Solstad, Espen Haavardsholm, and Tor Obrestad turned to the newly formed party Workers' Communist Party (Arbeidernes kommunistparti or AKP), and become involved in formulating a new political program that based on the view that literature should serve the working people and their uprising against capitalism.

In April 1990 the Archive exhibited Sei lirici della poesia visuale internazionale (Six Lyrists of International Visual Poetry), including works by Alain Arias-Misson, Ugo Carrega, Carlfriedrich Claus, Ian Hamilton Finlay, Tom Phillips, and Shohachiro Takahashi. The exhibition was then moved to the Cairoli College of the University of Pavia from 24 January to 7 February 1991, in collaboration with Marco Fraccaro. The following exhibition was Poesia concreta in Brasile (Concrete Poetry in Brazil), featuring works by Brazilian poets Augusto and Haroldo de Campos, and Décio Pignatari, members of the Noigandres group. The exhibition was opened on 21 March and lasted until 21 June 1991, then moved to the Palazzo Doria-Pamphili in Rome, in 1993 to the Museum of Contemporary Art in Marseille, to the Lyon Biennale and finally, in 1995, to the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo. In 1992 the ANS exhibited an anthology of the works of Martino Oberto, curated by Paula Mattoli and Giorgio Zanchetti and containing more than 40 artworks, documents, manuscripts and publications by the artist.
