At Haasts Bluff she had ten children: these included sons Billy Rowe and Riley Rowe, both of whom painted for Papunya Tula, and daughter Mitjili (born c. 1948), who married Long Tom Tjapanangka and went on to paint at Haasts Bluff. U.S. military records show the ship made 75 voyages to foreign shores and covered some 51,817 nautical miles in her first three years of service; her anchor touched bottom in 38 parts of North Africa, Sicily, Italy, England, Wales, Ireland, France and the Canal Zone. LST 393 is credited with carrying 9,135 soldiers – more than one-half of an Army division – and 3,248 vehicles ranging from Long Tom howitzers to Jeeps. Records show she also carried 5,373 prisoners of war and 817 casualties.

McCartney County Park straddles the river about from the mouth, and Ingram Slough enters from the left at the northern end of Ingram Island, about further downstream. Below this confluence, Anderson County Park is on the left. As the river curves around Irish Bend, Irish Bend County Park is on the left, and then Long Tom River enters from the left at Norwood Island, near RM 149 (RK 240). Meandering around Sam Daws Bend, the river splits to go around Hoacum Island.

Significant tributaries from source to mouth include the Middle and Coast forks and the McKenzie, Long Tom, Marys, Calapooia, Santiam, Luckiamute, Yamhill, Molalla, Tualatin, and Clackamas rivers. Beginning at above sea level, the main stem descends between source and mouth, or about 2.3 feet per mile (0.4 m per km). Source and mouth elevation derived from Google Earth search using GNIS source and mouth coordinates. The gradient is slightly steeper from the source to Albany than it is from Albany to Oregon City.

The Long Tom River is a tributary of the Willamette River in western Oregon in the United States. It drains an area at the south end of the Willamette Valley between Eugene and Corvallis. It rises in the Central Oregon Coast Range in western Lane County, approximately 10 mi (16 km) west of Veneta. It flows east through the mountains to Veneta, through the Fern Ridge Reservoir, and then north into the Willamette Valley, roughly parallel to and west of the Willamette River.

It is found in areas of still or flowing water in larger rivers from the tidal reaches to far inland and adults are infrequently recordedd in coastal marine waters.

Jonah became a member of Buffalo Will's traveling Wild West Show after a trick-shooting midget named Long Tom saved his life. He reconnected with an old friend named Spotted Balls and met a local squaw prostitute who gave birth to a Bear Boy.Jonah Hex: Shadows West #1 She claimed to have given birth after mating with a bear spirit. Hex decided to leave the camp with Spotted Balls and the squaw because he did not like the way things were run.

This infuriated Buffalo Will, who sent an armed posse led by Long Tom to murder them.Jonah Hex: Shadows West #2 Jonah killed most of his pursuers using traps, but Spotted Balls died in the final shootout. He was able to return the squaw and her cub to its father and Jonah finally met the mythical spirit people. Returning to camp with Long Tom's corpse, he swore to Buffalo Will that if he ever saw him again he would kill him.

The Motlatse RiverOlifants River now called Lepelle ("Permanent River"), Blyde River ( "Glad River"), or Umdhlazi River is a river in the Mpumalanga and Limpopo provinces of South Africa. It has a northwards course in steep-sided valleys and ravines of the Mpumalanga Drakensberg, before it enters the lowveld region of the Limpopo province. It has its ultimate origins at around 2,000 m altitude in the Hartebeesvlakte conservation area, to the north of Long Tom Pass. It runs through the Blyde River Canyon.

Two batteries of field guns covered the retreat by withdrawing in stages, each battery providing covering fire in turn while the other limbered up and fell back. The British were also very fortunate that a detachment of naval guns (four 12-pounder and two 4.7-inch guns, under Captain Percy Scott of ) arrived by train in Ladysmith and went almost straight into action.Kruger, p.95 Their first few rounds immediately found the range to Pepworth Hill and suppressed the Boers' "Long Tom".

Caspersnek Pass is an untarred Drakensberg pass that straddles the border between the Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces of South Africa, to connect the Ohrigstad and Blyde valleys. It offers a shortcut from the town of Ohrigstad to the resort area of Bourke's Luck, and rises to an elevation of , where it also provides access to the Morgenzon conservation area. It is to the north of the Robbers and Long Tom Pass, and passes between the Mapasebone () and Lehwiting () heights of the Drakensberg.

The T32 was accepted for service as the M7 in February 1942 and production began that April. The British Tank Mission had requested 2,500 to be delivered by the end of 1942 and a further 3,000 by the end of 1943, an order which was never fully completed.Icks, R. Hannavan and Inman creeks enter the reservoir as does Coyote Creek. (The topographic map also shows a separate Coyote Creek that leaves the reservoir south of the main Long Tom channel and rejoins it further downstream.) Below the reservoir come Squaw, the second confluence with Coyote Creek, then Lingo Slough, Bear, Amazon, Ferguson, Shafer, and Miller creeks.

From the hills around the besieged town of Ladysmith to the plains of the Orange Free State, MacBride's Brigade first looked after the Boers' great Long Tom gun, then fought in the Battle of Colenso and later held the rearguard, harassing Lord Roberts' cavalry as the Boer army retreated. A Second Irish Brigade was organised by Arthur Lynch. The arrival in the Irish camp of an Irish-American Ambulance Corps bolstered MacBride's Brigade. Michael Davitt who had resigned as an M.P, visited MacBride's Brigade.

The Albion CX22S was designed and built by Albion Motors in late 1943 to supplement the Scammell Pioneer heavy artillery tractor, which was not available in sufficient numbers. In service the CX22S was used by the British Army to tow the 155mm Long Tom and the BL 7.2-inch howitzer. The CX22S was based on Albion's CX23N 10-ton truck. The CX22S was a wheeled 6x4 truck, powered by a six-cylinder inline diesel engine, through a four-speed gearbox and two-speed auxiliary gearbox.

They were nicknamed "Big Bigge" (Frederick) and "Little Bigge" (Francis). It was during that time that Francis Bigge had an encounter with a notorious gang of bushrangers, known as "Wilson's Gang"in the Moombye district, New South Wales territory, while travelling with cattle from there to Mount Brisbane. Francis Bigge stood his ground determinedly against the bushrangers. One of the bushrangers, Tom Forrester, nicknamed "Long Tom" wanted to shoot Bigge, but the leader of the bushrangers would not allow this, owing to Bigge's bravery.

It continues west to Fern Ridge Reservoir and the Long Tom River. It collects water from 21 square miles of urban landscapes and storm drains, providing flood control, wildlife habitat, and recreation. In 1946, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers widened, deepened, and realigned the creek from Hilyard Street to Fern Ridge Reservoir in a diversion canal as a means of controlling floodwaters in the area. The Amazon flood control project was completed in 1958, using a trapezoidal channel designed to withstand a 25-year flood.

The lake is now home to 26 species of native fish and a population of freshwater crocodiles currently estimated at some 25,000. Fish species that are present in Lake Argyle include barramundi, southern saratoga, archer fish, forktail cat fish, mouth almighty, long tom, bony bream and sleepy cod. While the official website states that only incidentally a saltwater crocodile is found, other experts disagree. Cane toads reached the dam in late 2008, mostly via traveling along the Victoria Highway, with numbers rising significantly during the 2009 summer.

The NO series were -ton 6x6 artillery prime movers meant to tow the 155mm "Long Tom" field gun, 8 inch howitzer, and 240mm howitzer (the 240mm howitzer was two separate loads). They used the same EY overhead valve inline 6 cylinder gasoline engine developing as the NM series. The NO-2, −3, −6, and −7 varied only in details (NO-1, −4, and −5 were single prototypes). 2050 production NOs were built in 1943–1945, all 1097 NO-3 and −6 models were exported.

This fort was completed in September 1897 by Von Dewitz and Werner for a total cost of GBP £49,000. As with Fort Schanskop, it was also supplied with electricity, a telephone and running water. The fort was armed with a 75 mm Creusot gun ("Long Tom"), a 37 mm Maxim-Nordenfeldt cannon and a hand-cranked Martin-Henry Maxim. Initially eighteen gunners were stationed in the fort, but both men and armaments were gradually withdrawn until only one gunner and no cannons were left on 5 June 1900.

Timber Linn Park is a 90-acre (364,000 m²) park situated east of Interstate 5 and south of the Albany Municipal Airport on SE Price Road. Timber Linn Park has large open spaces with basketball courts, softball fields, horseshoe pits, various bike and pedestrian paths, playgrounds, covered meeting areas, tennis courts and a Frisbee field. Timber Linn Park is next to an open-air amphitheater used as a musical performance venue. There is a surviving example of a World War II era 155mm Long Tom heavy field artillery piece on display.

The usual gun tractor for the 7.2-inch howitzer in the early war years was the Scammell Pioneer, although this was never available in sufficient numbers and from late 1943 the Pioneer was supplemented by the Albion CX22S. The BL 7.2-inch howitzer was usually employed in two four-gun batteries (alongside two four-gun batteries equipped with the 155mm Long Tom) of "Heavy" regiments of Army Group Royal Artillery (AGRA) units, providing heavy fire support for British and Commonwealth troops. The Mk 6 remained in British Army service until the early 1960s.

The other project was the Semovente 149/40, based on the P 40 hull. Only one of these vehicles was ever built. It was intended to be a highly mobile self-propelled gun, and its armament was the most powerful gun of the Royal Italian Army: a 149 mm / 40 calibre artillery piece with a range of over (slightly more than that of the US 155 mm M1 Long Tom). This gun was produced in very few numbers, and the Italian artillery remained equipped mainly with obsolete weapons for the duration of the war.

Most of his British regular cavalry carried too much equipment and their unacclimatised horses (and those of the seven batteries of horse artillery) were exhausted. His effective force was reduced to two regiments of New Zealand and Australian light horse, and two "brigades" (actually battalions) of mounted infantry. Many species of fish and other aquatic animals populate the lake. The barramundi can grow to an enormous size in the lake because they have no natural predators. Each year, the lake is stocked with young barramundi from the Walkamin Research Station as the species is unable to breed in the lake due to the lack of access to salt water. Also present in Lake Tinaroo are eel-tailed catfish, sooty grunter, sleepy cod, mouth almighty, archer fish, spangled perch, long tom and many species of crayfish, including the red-claw and yabby.

Long Tom Roberts is one of the characters referred to as "The Fabulous Five", the primary assistants of Doc Savage, and first appears with the full name Thomas J. Roberts. The character is presented as an electrical engineer, holding the military rank of major, and a pilot. Physically he is described as sickly-looking and awkward with a pale complexion, buck teeth, one enormous gold tooth in front, big ears, and a large forehead. This contrasts with notes in the stories that he rarely became ill and was a proficient fighter.

The Oregon Country Fair (OCF) is a nonprofit organization and an annual three- day art and music fair held outside the city limits of Veneta, Oregon, United States. Located in the Willamette Valley, the site is about west of Eugene along the Long Tom River near the unincorporated community of Elmira. Annual attendance is approximately 45,000, and the fair has around 960 craft and food booths each year. The event is known as an outgrowth of the counter-culture movement and for using environmentally-friendly practices during the fair.

It is thought to have previously been a gathering place for the Kalapuya tribe of Native Americans. All ground disturbing activities on the fair property must be approved by the archaeology and construction crews. The Kalapuya lived in permanent winter homes and migrated throughout the Willamette Valley of Oregon during the summers.

They made expert mounted infantry, using every scrap of cover, from which they could pour in a destructive fire using modern, smokeless, Mauser rifles. In preparation for hostilities, the Boers had acquired around one hundred of the latest Krupp field guns, all horse-drawn and dispersed among the various Kommando groups and several Le Creusot "Long Tom" siege guns. The Boers' skill in adapting themselves to become first-rate artillerymen shows them to have been a versatile adversary. The Transvaal also had an intelligence service that stretched across South Africa and of whose extent and efficiency the British were as yet unaware.

The combatants fought at such a short distance from each other that Diron could hear Barette shouting to his men, telling them to take better aim and to fire into Decaturs hull. Their next salvos smashed two shot-holes through Decaturs hull, killing two men and also damaging the ship's sails and rigging. This, the most damaging British broadside of the battle, stopped an attempt at boarding and temporarily disabled Decatur, whose crew had to quickly repair the rigging. After repairs the Americans responded with fire from the Long Tom and began scoring more hits on Dominica.

Pioneer artillery tractors in the London Victory Parade, June 1946 Introduced in 1935, the Pioneer R100 heavy artillery tractor was used throughout World War II to tow medium and heavy artillery pieces. It had accommodation for the gun's crew, tools, equipment, and ammunition. Typical early war use included towing such medium pieces as the 60-pounder, 6-inch howitzer and even the 4.5-inch gun and 5.5-inch howitzer until the AEC Matador medium gun tractor was issued in sufficient numbers. Heavy artillery pieces towed included the 6-inch gun, 8-inch howitzer, 155 mm Long Tom and the 7.2-inch howitzer.

155mm Long Tom howitzer towed behind an M4 High Speed Tractor. The M4 was built by tractors manufacturer Allis-Chalmers of West Allis, Wisconsin, starting in 1943 and was in U.S. military service until approximately 1960. After WWII, under the US Mutual Defense Assistance Program, M4s was supplied to Greece, the Netherlands, Japan, Brazil, Yugoslavia and Pakistan and several other states friendly to the USA. In the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 the Pakistani Army used M4 Tractors to haul their M115 Howitzers to the battlefield of Chamb and then to the front at Lahore during the fighting with Indian troops.

(2007), p. 153: Allen had planned to surround Troina with two full infantry regiments under cover of a heavy bombardment with nine battalions of 105-mm howitzers, six battalions of 155-mm howitzers, and one battalion of 155-mm "Long Tom" guns, but faulty intelligence reports and the quick withdrawal of enemy forces at Cerami caused him to pare back the assault to a single regiment.

According to the story, Long said that Owens should jump from a few inches before the takeoff board. This would reduce the measured distance but avoid the risk of another fault; the theory was that Owens would still clear the required distance even with the handicap of jumping early. However, this conversation may be apocryphal; Grantland Rice was watching Owens the entirety of the qualifying round and did not see him speak to Long. Tom Ecker relates that he asked Owens about the story in 1965 and Owens admitted that it was not true, but just a good story.

Somquba and his followers used the caves as refuge, until Somquba was killed in an unexpected attack. Survivors stayed on under the leadership of Sudwala, and that is how the caves got their name. During the Second Boer War, in 1900, the caves were used by the Boers to store ammunition for their 94-pounder Long Tom guns. It was thought that the caves may have been used by President Paul Kruger to store the legendary "Kruger Millions", gold bullion which reputedly disappeared somewhere between Waterval Onder and Nelspruit during Paul Kruger's flight from Pretoria to Lourenço Marques (now Maputo) in Mozambique.

The Point Reyes Light wrote that he "quickly carved a niche as one of the area's best-loved performers, often playing at benefits and community events." He was a featured performer at the first California Banjo Gathering in Sacramento in September 2008, at which Pete Seeger joined by teleconference and expressed appreciation for Weed's original bluegrass song "Long Tom". Weed returned to Tucson in October to headline at the Arizona Folklore Preserve. In a series which included Charlie Tagawa, Weed performed solo banjo at the Summer Jazz Banjo Festival in June 2009, held at Saint Mary's College of California.

Kruger, p.93 At the same time, the first shell from the Boers' "Long Tom" on Pepworth Hill landed in the town, causing consternation. The British field guns opened fire on Pepworth Hill and Long Hill, and temporarily silenced the Boer siege gun but Colonel Ian Hamilton's frontal attack on Pepworth Hill was called off as it became clear that Grimwood was in trouble, and Hamilton's attack would not be supported. Although the main body of South African Republic Boers under Commandant-General Piet Joubert were stationed behind Pepworth Hill, there were none on Long Hill, and fire on this hill was wasted.

He was looking for something along the lines of the Beverly Hillbillies, another group who were put together in a big city (in their case, Los Angeles) but made to sound as if they were plucked from the American South. Cole had Fields and Hall's group billed as "Rex Cole's Mountaineers", and their first broadcasts came in July 1930. Most of their material was written by Fields and Hall themselves, who went by the stage names Long Tom and Joe Colt on the show. They quickly became one of WEAF's most popular acts, and by 1931 had signed to a lucrative new contract.

Chenin blanc and colombard vineyards are planted behind the facility, on the bank of the Swannie River. Robbins, 2001 French's men did not have much opportunity to relax when they reached the town, as they were roused during their first night in the town first to make yet another dash to try to capture the Long Tom gunJourdan, p. 126 and, in the early hours of 17 February, to cut off Cronje’s main force, who had abandoned Magersfontein and were heading east towards Bloemfontein along the Modder River.Goldman, p.98-105 Kitchener directed French to cut off the Boers' escape; of French's original strength of 5,000, only 1,200 of his cavalrymen were still fit, while the horses were depleted.

Year five was all about the fans. The event introduced a Hawkeye Fashion Show/Product Showcase to show off all the latest gear offered by vendors, and featured the unveil of three designs to be seen in the upcoming Herky on Parade project, a 10th anniversary public art event to be launched the following May. FRYfest VI celebrated the quarterbacks of the Hayden Fry era and featured a panel discussion with Chuck Long, Tom Grogan, Ryan Driscoll, and other key quarterbacks, along with Hayden Fry himself. New additions included a Hawkeye Trivia competition and an outdoor Hawkeye bags tournament.

Tom and Moll were married in 1717, but did not live together long. The Fern Ridge Reservoir was created in 1942 when the United States Army Corps of Engineers dammed the river to control flooding. The watershed includes approximately of land (262,000 acres, 1060 km2) zoned as 45 percent forest, 30 percent agricultural, 8 public, and 17 percent urban or rural residential. The Long Tom waters support more than 140,000 people in the area, including residents in the city of Veneta and the rural farming communities of Alvadore, Cheshire, Crow, Franklin, and Noti, as well as industrial and commercial land on the western edge of Eugene.

Points of interest along the Panorama Route The Panorama Route is a scenic road in South Africa connecting several cultural and natural points of interest. The route, steeped in the history of South Africa, is in Mpumalanga province, centred around the Blyde River Canyon, the world's third largest canyon. It features numerous waterfalls, one of the largest afforested areas in South Africa, and several natural landmarks. The route starts at the foot of the Long Tom Pass just outside Lydenburg, following the natural descent from the Great Escarpment to the Lowveld, and ending at the border of the Mpumalanga and Limpopo provinces near the Echo Caves.

121 Rhodes' message to the residents of Kimberley, offering shelter in the Kimberley Mine The Boers countered on 7 February with a much heavier 100-pounder named "Long Tom"; it had been disabled by British saboteurs at Ladysmith, before being repaired at Pretoria, and brought to Kimberley.De Souza, p. 82 In addition to having larger shells than any of the siege guns used up to that point, its longer range meant that it could also target any location in Kimberley. The town's inhabitants had become accustomed to shelling by smaller guns and were to some extent able to take shelter and to carry on their daily lives.

As the Long Tom Pass, it goes eastwards for 46 kilometres, as a zig-zag road, to meet the southern terminus of the R532 Road south of the town of Sabie. From the R532 junction south of Sabie, the R37 goes south-south-east for 47 kilometres, meeting the eastern terminus of the R539 Road, to reach the city of Nelspruit (Mbombela). It first reaches an intersection with the new Mbombela Northern Bypass (N4 National Route; Maputo Corridor) before entering the suburb of Riverside and proceeding to reach its terminus at a junction with the R40 Road (Madiba Drive), just next to the R40's Crocodile River crossing.

"He bowled fast left-arm over the wicket with one or two really very quick ones which had the suspicion of a throw about them".p36-37, Bedser Arthur Milton gloved a dropped catch going for hook, but settled down with his Gloucestershire team-mate Tom Graveney who was in fine form. "Long Tom" was out l.b.w. trying to pull a ball that stayed low with the score on 54, but Milton (116) added 197 with Raman Subba Row (83). McDonald brought on Kline (3/126), but his slow left-arm wrist-spin deliveries were expensive and failed to turn.

Water was supplied from a pump station in the Fountains Valley which was shared with the nearby Fort Klapperkop. The garrison was initially armed with one officer and 30 men and was armed with 37 mm Maxim-Nordenfeldt cannon, Martini-Henry hand- cranked Maxim machine guns and a 155 mm Creusot gun (also known colloquially as a "Long Tom"). By October 1899, only 17 men were still stationed at the fort. Both the garrison and the armaments were gradually reduced during the course of the Second Anglo-Boer war until there was only one man and no guns left over on 5 June 1900, the day on which British forces occupied Pretoria.

Caralambo, who was of Greek ancestry, was living in Smyrna when he was selected for the Camel Corps. The American government hired eight camel drivers from Asia Minor to tend the animals.Fall 2004 Caralambo and the other camel drivers arrived at the Port of Indianola in Lavaca County, Texas with their animals on the USS Supply. In Steven Dean Pastis' article "Go West Greek George," the eight men are identified: Caralambo, Hadji Ali (later known as Philip Tedro), Mimico Teodora (Mico), Hadjiatis Yannaco (Long Tom), Anastasio Coralli (Short Tom), Michelo Georgios, Yanni IIIato and Giorgios Costi. The United States had purchased a total of 33 camels: 3 in Tunis, 9 in Egypt, and 21 in Smyrna.

The diggers formed a Mutual Protection Association and elected Stafford Parker as their leader. Klipdrift was renamed Parkerton (from 1873 it was called Barkly West), and a Diggers’ Republic was proclaimed in July 1870. A popular early cradle sieve for recovery of diamonds was the so- called “Long Tom”, which was reliant on large quantities of water. An improved version less dependent on water was developed by the American digger, author of The South African Diamond Fields, Jerome Babe. His ‘dry sifter’, known as the “Yankee Baby”, is still used in the twenty first century by some small- scale diggers. At the time, its inventor was said to be “the first Babe to rock his own cradle”.

Spy for Vanity Fair, 1899 At the outbreak of the Second Boer War in October 1899, Major General Hunter (although actually Chief of Staff to General Sir Redvers Buller's 1st Army Corps) was on the staff of Sir George White's Natal Field Force during the Battle of Ladysmith in Natal and the subsequent 118-day siege.Pakenham 1979, p.154 On 8 December he successfully led a small raid against one of the Boers' Creusot "Long Tom" guns and a howitzer which they disabled with cotton charges.Pakenham 1979, pp. 270–271 The town was relieved on 1 March 1900 and Hunter was promoted to lieutenant general on 6 March and posted as General Officer Commanding 10th Division.

Low Pass is an unincorporated community in Lane County, Oregon, United States, on the Long Tom River, east of Blachly and west of Cheshire. The settlement is centered on a small pullout on Oregon Route 36 with a gas station/convenience store and a diner that serves as an unofficial community center for rural residents. The nearest recycling and waste facility is the Low Pass Transfer Station The settlement is named for its location on a slight rise approaching the foothills of the Coast Range mountains, in contrast to the nearby mountain pass High Pass. Much of the land west of Low Pass consists of old-growth forest owned by the Bureau of Land Management.

US Marines from the 9th Defense Battalion on New Georgia or Rendova manning a 90mm AA gun around July or August 1943. The 9th Defense Battalion as activated at Marine Barracks, Parris Island, South Carolina on 1 February 1942. Originally a training detachment, it consisted of 75 enlisted men sent over from the 5th Artillery Group located at Parris Island. The 13 February 1942 the battalion departed from Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia onboard the USS William P. Biddle (APA-8) arriving at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba on 19 February. The battalion consisted of 3 batteries 90mm AA artillery; 2 batteries 155 mm “Long Tom” seacoast artillery; 3 batteries each 40mm, 20mm and 50 caliber weapons designed as both anti-tank and anti-air artillery.

In June 1943 the battalion left Guadalcanal and took part in the Landings on Rendova, set up its artillery and fought off attempts by the Japanese to regain control. The battalion's 155 mm “long Tom” artillery shelled Japanese positions across the Blanche Channel on New Georgia and elements were progressively moved onto the island of New Georgia to support the Drive on Munda Point and later defend the Munda Airfield and assist in the operations to seize the surrounding islands (e.g. during the Battle of Arundel Island). The 9th Defense Battalion deployed light antiaircraft guns, such as this Bofors 40mm weapon, in the Solomons on Rendova and New Georgia, both to protect the Zanana beachhead and to support the accelerating advance against the Munda airfield.

During the siege of Ladysmith he was resident in the Royal Hotel, but spent the days in shell-proof dugouts along the Klip River, or fishing, while the town was being shelled by Boer forces. Stark had just returned and was standing on the hotel's veranda on the evening of 18 November 1899, when at 19:30 the Long Tom cannon stationed on Pepworth Hill fired two shots at the hotel. These were aimed at important persons who may have assembled there, probably Leander Starr Jameson, Prime Minister of the Cape Colony, and Colonel Francis Rhodes who were known to be in town. Stark's legs were seriously injured by the second shell and he died shortly afterwards while undergoing surgery.

Harrison Howell Dodge is also buried in the cemetery, as is former White House Chief Usher Howell G. Crim. Near the Fitzhugh graves is a memorial marker to Long Tom, a chief of the Doeg tribe,Some accounts have claimed that he was a chief of the "Orinoco" or "Oronoco" tribe, but no group of Indians by this name is known in Virginia. who according to legend was killed by Susanna Alexander to save either herself or her husband John during an attack. According to Alexander family lore, he was buried at the Preston plantation cemetery and his remains were moved to Pohick with those of the family; the exact location of his grave in the churchyard, however, is not known.

A memorial to John Augustine Washington, brother of George, was erected by a local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1986, but it does not mark a known gravesite. The first wife of Rear Admiral Donald Temple Eller is buried at Pohick Church; the Admiral is buried at Arlington National Cemetery, but some of his ashes were interred next to her grave. Also in the churchyard is the grave of Carnegie Medal recipient John Charles Springer, who served as a vestryman at the church and as secretary of the Historic Pohick Church Foundation. Memorial to Long Tom A memorial to the unknown dead interred in the cemetery was erected in 1925, and has since been set into the brick wall surrounding the parish house.

The other three, less popular, main characters are described as being away on private ventures: Johnny giving a lecture in London, Long Tom experimenting on an electrical pesticide in Europe, and Renny building a hydro-electric plant in South Africa. The original intent was that all three would become the basis of the next three novels. Johnny's story became The Sea Magician in the next issue of Doc Savage, but this did not happen with all of them.Essay Interlude in Silver and Gold by Will Murray, Nostalgia Ventures "Doc Savage #3", reprinting of Death in Silver and The Golden Peril, The follow-up adventure involving Renny later became the basis for the 1991 retro novel Python Isle by Will Murray.

This battery was a stopgap measure, put in place quickly between March and May 1942, as an emergency defense against enemy ships and submarines while the batteries of larger guns and their related fire control towers were being built.This gun was extensively used in World War I as the Canon de 155 mm Grande Puissance Filloux (GPF), designed for the French Army, but also used and manufactured by the United States for the U.S. Army and Marine Corps under the designations of M1917 (French-built) and M1918 (US-built). With the American forces, some were mounted on M12 Gun Motor Carriages; the GPF was the standard heavy artillery gun until 1942 when the 155 mm M1A1 "Long Tom" field guns replaced them. Under orders of General Cronje the Mafeking railway and telegraph lines were cut the same day, and the town began to be besieged from 13 October. Mafeking was first shelled on 16 October after the British commanders ignored Cronje's 9 o’clock deadline to surrender. The Boer 'Long Tom' in action during the siege Although usually considerably outnumbered by Boer troops, the garrison withstood the siege for 217 days, defying the predictions of the politicians on both sides. In reality, the Boers risked little to tie up Baden-Powell's force and stores and for most of the time the number of Boers actively engaged in the siege were few. While at one time the Boer troops numbered over 8,000 and more artillery was briefly brought up, most of these were merely moving through the siege camp.

In mid-December 1899, during 'Black Week', the British Army suffered reverses at Stormberg, Magersfontein and Colenso. Chamberlain was critical privately of the British Army's military performance and was often vexed by the attitude of the War Office. When the Boers bombarded Ladysmith with Creusot ninety-four pounder siege guns, Chamberlain asked for the dispatch of comparable artillery to the war, but was exasperated by the Secretary of State for War, Lord Lansdowne's argument that such weapons required platforms that needed a year of preparation, even though the Boers operated their "Long Tom" without elaborate mountings. Chamberlain made a number of speeches to reassure the public, and worked to strengthen bonds between Britain and the self-governing colonies, gratefully receiving over 30,000 troops from Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

The 119th Field Artillery Regiment used the M1A1 155mm gun during World War II. Nicknamed the "Long Tom", this gun fired a 127-pound shell to a range of 13.2 miles (21.2 km). The United States declared war on Germany on 11 December 1941 four days after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and on the same day that Germany declared war on the United States. Colonel Lloyd M. Hanna was appointed the new commander of the 119th Field Artillery on 16 February 1942. In 1943, the United States Army decided to restructure the non-divisional field artillery to increase their flexibility and response times during combat. The 119th Field Artillery had been a non-divisional field artillery unit since they were separated from the 32nd Infantry Division on 18 September 1940.

The U.S. Navy participated in harbor defense with anti-submarine nets and magnetic indicator loops for detecting submarines;Indicator loops website joint harbor defense command posts and harbor entrance control posts were established at harbor defense commands to coordinate army and navy operations. The 155 mm Long Tom artillery piece, an evolution of the 155 mm GPF concept, was used in island and harbor defense in the Pacific from 1943 by both the Marines and the Army. Seven Army Coast Artillery Groups (155 mm Gun) were activated in May–June 1944 as a result of breaking up the tractor-drawn 155 mm gun regiments, which may have been rearmed with the new weapon. Three were deployed to Okinawa and the Philippines in 1945 while one was activated in Trinidad; the remainder never left CONUS.

The gun was designed during the First World War by Colonel Louis Filloux to meet an urgent need for modern heavy artillery and became the standard heavy field gun of the French Army from 1917 until the Second World War. It was also adopted by the United States as the M1917 and a close derivative of it was made in and used by the US as the M1918 through the Second World War. The gun was also manufactured in the United States from 1917, after the US switched to metric artillery based on French patterns. It was used by the United States Army and United States Marine Corps as their primary heavy gun as the 155 mm Gun M1917 (French-made) or M1918 (US-made) until 1942, when it was gradually replaced by the 155 mm M1A1 Long Tom.

The other 11 dams are Big Cliff on the North Santiam River; Green Peter and Foster on the Santiam River; Cougar on the South Fork McKenzie River; Blue River on the Blue River; Fern Ridge on the Long Tom River; Hills Creek, Dexter on the Middle Fork Willamette River; Fall Creek on Fall Creek; Cottage Grove on the Coast Fork Willamette River, and Dorena on the Row River. A continuing controversy about these high dams involves Chinook salmon and steelhead blocked from roughly half of their historic habitat and spawning grounds on the Willamette's major tributaries. Unable to survive and reproduce as they once did, they have been "brought to the brink of extinction". Endangered species listings and a subsequent lawsuit by Willamette Riverkeeper led to a plan to improve fish passage and other actions to help native fish recover in 2008.

The Battle of Troina began on 31 July, when the Germans repelled an advance by the 39th Infantry, a 9th Infantry Division formation temporarily attached to the 1st Infantry Division, commanded by Major General Terry Allen. This setback forced Bradley and Allen to orchestrate a massive assault. Early on the first day of fighting, Sergeant Gerry H. Kisters of the 91st Cavalry was awarded the Medal of Honor for silencing two machine gun positions. Over the next six days the men of the 1st Infantry Division, together with elements of the 9th Division, a French Moroccan infantry battalion, 165 artillery pieces (divided among 9 battalions of 105-mm howitzers, 6 battalions of 155-mm howitzers, and 1 battalion of 155-mm "Long Tom" guns), and numerous Allied aircraft, were locked in combat with Troina's tenacious defenders.

Since about the start of World War II, the term has been applied to long-range artillery pieces that fire at a relatively low angle, as opposed to howitzers which can fire at higher angles. Field guns also lack a specialized purpose, such as anti-tank or coastal artillery. By the later stages of World War II the majority of artillery in use was either in the form of howitzers of 105 mm to 155 mm, or in form of hybrid anti-tank/field guns that had high enough muzzle velocity to be used in both roles. The most common field guns of the era were the British 5.5 inch, the U.S. 155 mm Long Tom (a development of a French World War I weapon) and Soviet BS-3 - an artillery piece adapted from a Naval gun and designed to double up as an anti-tank weapon.

Winter was a member of the original Boston American League team, which joined the league in 1901 when it became a major league. The Philadelphia Athletics passed on signing him because their owner and manager, Connie Mack, believed he was too small to pitch in the major leagues. He won 16 games in his rookie season for the second-place Americans, following up with 11 wins in 1902. Late in the season he became seriously ill with typhoid fever, which was nearly fatal. Winter was chosen to start on Opening Day of the 1903 Boston season, defeating Rube Waddell and the Philadelphia Athletics, 9–4, at Huntington Avenue Grounds. He also wound up pitching in the game in which the Americans clinched the pennant, although he did not play in the 1903 World Series as Boston used only Cy Young, Bill Dinneen and Long Tom Hughes.

Near its mouth, the river splits into two channels that flow around Sauvie Island. The main channel enters the Columbia about from the larger stream's mouth on the Pacific Ocean, and the smaller Multnomah Channel enters the Columbia about further downstream near St. Helens in Columbia County. Incorporated Cities along the Willamette's course include Springfield and Eugene in Lane County; Harrisburg in Linn County; Corvallis in Benton County; Albany in Linn and Benton counties; Independence in Polk County; Salem in Marion and Polk Counties; Keizer in Marion County; Newberg in Yamhill County; Oregon City, West Linn, Milwaukie, and Lake Oswego in Clackamas County (Small portions of the later two extend into Multnomah County), and Portland in Multnomah County. (Parts of Portland are also in Washington County, but the Willamette neven makes contact with Washington County.) Significant tributaries include the McKenzie, Long Tom, Marys, Calapooia, Santiam, Luckiamute, Yamhill, Molalla, Tualatin, and Clackamas rivers.

On 9 August 1820, Cooke had major success at the Lyceum as Lord Ruthven, the hero of The Vampyre, and in the following year strengthened his reputation as Dirk Hatteraick in the Witch of Derncleugh, a version of Guy Mannering, George in The Miller's Maid (a melodrama of John Faucit Saville from Robert Bloomfield), and Frankenstein's monster in Presumption; or, the Fate of Frankenstein, Richard Brinsley Peake's 1823 adaptation of Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein. Cooke then joined the Covent Garden Company, and played Zenocles in Ali Pacha, by John Howard Payne, on 19 October 1822, Richard I in Maid Marian on 3 December 1822, and other parts. When, in 1825, Frederick Henry Yates and Daniel Terry took the Adelphi, Cooke was engaged and played Long Tom Coffin in Edward Fitzball's drama The Pilot. At the close of the season he visited Paris, and presented Le Monstre et le Magicien (again playing Frankenstein's monster) 80 successive nights at the Porte-Saint- Martin.

The Coos Bay Line began in 1893 as the Coos Bay, Roseburg & Eastern Railroad and Navigation Company (CBR&E;) bringing logs and lumber from coastal forests to the seaport town of Marshfield (later renamed Coos Bay.) Southern Pacific Railroad purchased the CBR&E; in 1906 and spent ten years building west from Eugene on its Willamette River valley line to a connection with the former CBR&E; at Reedsport to open this Coos Bay branch for traffic in August 1916. The completed branch line went from Eugene to Powers via the communities of Veneta, Noti, Swisshome, Mapleton, Cushman, Canary, Reedsport, Lakeside, Hauser, North Bend, Coos Bay, Coquille and Myrtle Point. The branch climbs out of Eugene along Long Tom River and Noti Creek before cresting the coast range in tunnel 13 to follow Wildcat Creek and the Siuslaw River downstream to the Pacific coast. The branch crosses the Siuslaw River six times.
