Digital Spy editor Nick Levine gave the single a four out of five stars rating, writing that "on first listen, it feels a bit too ordinary to be trailing such a potentially audacious long-player. However, after a few spins it becomes clear that this is far from a flop".
After a highly successful career as a recording artist with Columbia Records from 1956 to 1963, Mathis moved to Mercury Records, for which he recorded exclusively from 1963 to 1967, releasing thirteen singles and ten studio albums (as well as recording an 11th long player, Broadway, that went unreleased until 2014). The change was motivated by a desire for greater control over his recordings that would include owning the masters. This album was the first to be recorded by the singer's own production company, Global Records, for distribution by Mercury. In the liner notes for The Complete Global Albums Collection, Mathis commented on two of the songs he chose.
He recorded his first long-player right after graduation, on his own budget, which was almost US$300. This allowed 2 days in a cheap studio to record the acoustic instruments, like vibraphone, accordion, sax and vocals. Everything else like keys, synth, guitars, bass, scratches were recorded at home, and the material got produced and mixed on an average home PC. The album titled Shallow and Profound came out in 2000 and its success put Yonderboi on the international map of electronic music. He was amongst the pioneers of downtempo and trip hop, the youngest member of the movement, and the only one from the former Eastern Bloc.
The whole song is performed, at times in the foreground, at times in the background. Closeups of Phillips wearing an ape mask (as is his penchant during live performances of the song), and Tarzan-like rope swinging by the singer, are featured. A gap of 5 years between studio albums number 3 and 4 having elapsed (notwithstanding the Killer Klowns EP), a writer at the Los Angeles Times was led to connect the title of their 1989 long player, Second Coming, to the band's "comeback status". The writer noted that this album had some Beatles-like melodicism and some "art-rock aspirations", while retaining the Dickies' characteristic punk "silliness".
The disc presents five singles with five B-sides, five tracks from his debut album, and six tracks from his second long-player, Elvis. All were both recorded and released in the title year of the disc, 1956, except for "Too Much," released in January 1957. An alternate and earlier take of "Heartbreak Hotel" included is previously unreleased. By concentrating on the rhythm numbers rather than the country material and the ballads, this compilation showcases Presley the early icon of rock and roll in the 1950s, also arguing for this particular year as being his most notable in the decade, and perhaps even that of his entire career.
Tolhurst was one of the co-founders of English rock band The Cure, and was the band's drummer from 1976, playing on the albums Three Imaginary Boys, Seventeen Seconds, Faith and Pornography. After the Pornography tour in 1982, he became the band's keyboardist. In late 1989 during the recording of the Cure's eighth studio long-player, entitled Disintegration, Tolhurst was asked to leave the band by Robert Smith due to alcohol and narcotic use adversely affecting his professional reliability. Despite receiving a credit for "other instrument" on Disintegration, the other members of the band have said that Tolhurst did not play on the album.

He also worked around this period as a record producer on the early releases by Cockney Rejects, and the Angelic Upstarts. His first solo material was released via Polydor Records, being the single Lucky Man (1980), and a long-player entitled Imagination Camouflage (1980), recorded with Derwood Andrews and Mark Laff, formerly of Generation X as session musicians, who also received co-writing credits for two of the LP's songs).Entry for 'Imagination Camouflage' in the 'Discogs' website (2019). Pursey then moved to Epic Records for three further singles releases, including "Animals Have More Fun" (1981), co-written with Peter Gabriel, and a second solo LP entitled Alien Orphan (1981).
Phil Ochs in Concert is Phil Ochs' third long player, released in 1966 on Elektra Records. Despite its title, it was not entirely live, as several tracks were actually recorded in the studio, owing to flaws in the live recordings made in Boston and New York City in late 1965 and early 66. The album's producers retained the essence of a live album by including song patter and audience reactions between and during the songs. Phil Ochs in Concert features many of the folksinger's most enduring songs and represents the culmination of Ochs' folk career, the last of his original albums to be all-acoustic.
Wrath of Caine was met with generally favorable reviews from music critics. Omar Burgess of HipHopDX said "Pusha is essentially on cruise control for the duration of his freebie prelude to My Name Is My Name. None of this is to say that Wrath of Caine isn’t worth the five minutes it should take to download and play or stream it on the device of your choice. Even when most of his focus is likely on his upcoming Def Jam long player, Pusha T can show off, be humble, recount his rock chopping days and actually rap with the best of them. And in a bleak, boring first quarter, that’s more than a lot of people are offering".

In Smith's opinion, Miles Davis is "the most revolutionary artist" in the book, while the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967) is the album that most clearly satisfies the three criteria for inclusion. He comments that the featured albums show artistic ambition and influence in the areas of, variously, technological experimentation, mixing musical genres, presentation of alternate realities, and commentary on contemporaneous music – the latter being demonstrated especially by the Mothers of Invention's Freak Out! (1966), which ridiculed "both the status quo and the counterculture". The book includes a timeline of key events in the history of recorded sound and divides the main discussion into seven chapters, starting with "The Birth of the Long Player, 1952–1962".
Scoundrel Days was the second long-player release from A-ha, which was highly anticipated after the success of their critically acclaimed first L.P., Hunting High and Low (1985), which had reached #2 in the United Kingdom's Album Chart, and #15 in the United States' Billboard 200 Chart in the previous year. Scoundrel Days was recorded in England in early 1986 at R.G. Jones Studio in Beulah Road in Wimbledon, South-West London. The record was produced by Alan Tarney, who had produced the band's big hit single releases "Take On Me" and "The Sun Always Shines on T.V." in the previous year, and it was engineered by Gerry Kitchingham.Cover sleeve production credits for Scoundrel Days (1986).
The band in 1966 Manfred Mann & The Beatgirls on the Dutch TV programme Moef Ga Ga on 22 March 1968 Jones was replaced by Mike d'Abo in July 1966, and the group switched labels to Fontana Records, where they were produced by Shel Talmy. Their first Fontana single, a version of Dylan's "Just Like a Woman", released in July, scraped into the UK top ten and reached number one in Sweden. Their new long-player, As Is, followed in October; the group's increased studio technique sidelined their jazz, soul and blues roots. The next two singles, "Semi-Detached, Suburban Mr James" and "Ha Ha Said The Clown", both reached the Top 5.
Music & Media wrote about the song: "Maybe it had to happen at some point... so blame the Voelker brothers (Achim and Klaus), a German production team who initially came up with the unlikely idea of an album combining rap with opera. This is the first single to be taken from the resulting long player, The Rapsody Overture: Hip Hop Meets Classics (due on November 3). The single uses Borodin's Prince Igor as a foundation over which Warren G raps and Norwegian folk singer Sissel provides "classical" vocals. At German AC com mercial station Radio Gong in Nurnberg, Bavaria, programme director Marc Stingl considers the track to be "a perfect chartbreaker because of the combination of rap with classical music.
In 1994, Andrews with Elizabeth Westwood came back to live in London from the U.S. and set up a new experimental Electronic pop/rock act entitled 'Moondogg', working in collaboration with Martin Lee Stephenson in a Hoxton recording studio. The act released several records over the next decade, published by varying small labels in the United Kingdom, U.S. and Japan without impacting any commercial charts. A single entitled 'Wonderfool' (1995) was first released, followed by a long-player entitled Fat Lot of Good (1996) carrying a commercially counterintuitive cover art image. The album was supported by the release of an E.P. titled 'Silver Lining', and the singles 'Black Pain' (1996), and 'Nothing's Sacred' (1996).
October 2003 saw the release of Boxcar Satan's third long player Upstanding and Indigent, again for DogFingers, expanding its already diverse sonic palette by ornamenting its noisy, post-punk take on pre-war blues with touches of Cajun music, gospel and even tasteful prog rock. Honing their songs with a newfound melodicism and complexity, the Boxcars spin tales of train-wreck lives, bandit queen Phoolan Devi and carnival freakshow stars. And their take on the Depression-era song "How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live?" seems all too appropriate in the current political environment. Recorded after the addition of former Worm, 1.0 and Shit City Dreamgirls drummer Ken Robinson, at Tribal Studios in San Antonio, Texas by Chad Garrett.
Kidda is the artist name for UK electronic music and video producer Ste McGregor. Described by one national newspaper in the UK as "a bearded 30-something one-man cottage industry", he is signed to the Brighton-based Skint Records – the home of Fatboy Slim, aka Norman Cook. McGregor has released one album on Skint, "Going Up", and his second long-player "Hotel Radio" is scheduled for release in the summer of 2011. His track "Under The Sun" was used in Bacardi's worldwide TV advertising campaign, and other singles from his debut sample-based album such as "Strong Together" have made the charts in several European countries including Italy, Belgium and Holland, and has recently been licensed to Ultra Records in America.
His eponymous debut album was released in 2005 and revealed that Promis was already influenced by the French chanson method and adult pop music structure, but there was a decidedly lo-fi element to the long player. The second album Promis issued, Promis 2 (2007), uncovered further sonic touchstones which included classical, Gothic, Mediterranean, and Balkan music. In a review of Promis 2, reviewer Leonard Lair remarked of the album, "Promis 2 is too long an album to take in one sitting, but overall it's the slower, subtler songs that should ensure Promis has a future beyond the reputation of a showman." From 2008 Promis teamed up with British producer Ian Matthews in Los Angeles, who produced the third album Promis III.
After hearing the fairy-tale introduction, "Terry Magnifica," and the loopy yodeling in the opening minutes of "These Days Are Old," you can't help but recognize Spookey Ruben as eccentricity in its purest form. He also, however, proves himself an undeniably superb and original stylist on this debut long-player. If Andy Partridge and Colin Moulding had continued to explore the most cracked and esoteric terrain of Oranges & Lemons rather than further refining their pop/rock, or if Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith had lightened up considerably during the sessions for Seeds of Love, the results might have approached Modes of Transportation, Vol. 1. The songs range from the bizarre to the childlike to the strangely haunting, all with impeccably crafted pop hooks.
Paprika has received positive reviews from film critics. It holds an 84% "Certified Fresh" approval rating on the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, based on 90 reviews, with an average rating of 7.29/10 and the consensus reading, "Following its own brand of logic, Paprika is an eye- opening mind trip that is difficult to follow but never fails to dazzle." Metacritic, which assigns a weighted average score, rated the film 81 out of 100 based on 26 critic reviews, indicating "universal acclaim". Paprika won the Best Feature Length Theatrical Anime Award at the sixth-annual Tokyo Anime Awards during the 2007 Tokyo International Anime Fair. Andrez Bergen of Yomiuri Shimbun praised the Paprika as the "most mesmerizing animation long- player since Miyazaki's Spirited Away five years ago" (in 2001).
It then became a top 20; which it stayed at until being replaced by the Record Retailer top 50. It also inaugurated the countries first Long Player chart, which commenced as a top five on 28 July 1956. By March 1962, Record Mirror adopted publication of Record Retailers top 50 from 24 March 1962. After 21 April 1966, Record Mirror published a "Bubbling Under List" right under the main chart (at the time the Singles Top 50, the Albums Top 30 and the EP Top 10). "The Breakers", as it was called later in the year, were 10 to 15 records (for the singles chart) which had not made the top 50 that week, but were poised to reach the big chart the next week ranked in sales order i.e.
In 1983, he launched his vinyl long player In 't midden van' t gewoel (In the middle of the hustle and bustle). "Very strong, if not virulent in his Flemish protest, was Brussels singer Jef Elbers, who always profiled himself as an illustrious opponent of Belgium", as Peter Notte writes in his (except for Internet) unpublished thesis, while noting that, of all the singers dedicated to the Flemish cause, he probably was the most committed Fleming, while singers such as Wannes Van de Velde stood rather for a more lenient inclination, whereas a group of singers like De Elegasten embodied the superlative that provided Elbers the opportunity to raise the bid.Peter Notte, ”De Vlaamse Kleinkunstbeweging na de Tweede Wereldoorlog, Een historisch overzicht” , (The new wave of Flemish singers after the Second World War.
The rest of the album was equally strong, with "Mandolin Wind" again showcasing that instrument; "(I Know) I'm Losing You" adding hard-edged soul to the mix; and "Tomorrow Is a Long Time", a cover of a Bob Dylan song. But the ultimate manifestation of the early Stewart solo style was the Stewart-Wood-penned "Every Picture Tells a Story" itself: powered by Mick Waller's drumming, Pete Sears's piano and Wood's guitar work in a largely acoustic arrangement; it is a song relating to the picaresque adventures of the singer. The second Faces album, Long Player, was released in early 1971 and enjoyed greater chart success than First Step. Faces also got their only US Top 40 hit with "Stay With Me" from their third album A Nod Is as Good as a Wink...To a Blind Horse released in late 1971.
Also recorded during this period was the band's blistering take on Motown classic "(I Know) I'm Losing You" which later appeared on lead singer Rod Stewart's solo album Every Picture Tells a Story rather than on "Long Player" or as a Faces single release. This practice led to increased murmurings of discontent in some quarters that Stewart's management was keeping the best Faces studio performances for Stewart's solo projects, to the detriment of the band as a unit. While the sessions for both albums did unquestionably overlap, Stewart's dual recording contracts with different labels, as both a solo artist and as a member of the Faces, complicated matters greatly. This led to the odd situation where his Faces colleagues could only be credited individually and not explicitly as 'Faces' for their efforts on his solo albums at the time.
Some of the other tracks would benefit from less-overbearing production, most notably the chilling "Where Hides Sleep," making Alf one of those albums that sounds better once the listener has mentally undressed the songs a bit." Speaking of the 2016 deluxe edition, Attitude magazine writer Josh Lee stated: "Switching from the synth-pop she'd made with Vince Clarke to a mainstream pop sound fashioned by the writing/producing duo of Steve Jolley and Tony Swain, Moyet sang the hell out of hits like "Love Resurrection", "All Cried Out" and "Invisible" on a long-player that sounds just as fresh and bright today. The deluxe edition remastering helps, but three-plus decades later the songs still stand up as pop classics." Gay Times magazine writer Darren Howard wrote: "Listening to Alf now, it still holds up.
" At Paste, Evan Rytlewski noted that "the result is the purest late-night album that Camera Obscura has recorded yet". This Is Fake DIY's Gareth Ware found this to be "literate, swooning pop music in the shape of new long-player 'Desire Lines'." At The A.V. Club, Annie Zaleski noted that the album "unlike previous Camera Obscura efforts, its songs aren’t as immediate or arresting" because it "has a few sleepy spots" that "causes it to drag on occasion." In the realm of lyrics, Thomas said it has the "now trademark mixture of heartbreaking and sharply astute lyrical turns guiding the songs through either romantic longing, dour tragedy, or touches of the band's more and more familiar dry sense of humor." Horowitz noted that "her slightly retro, girl group pop features often edgy lyrics that belie the music’s droolingly pretty, perky and persistent melodies.
Two subsequent full lengths – 2007's Distance and Time and 2009's Sort of Revolution (which featured song-writing collaborations with John Legend) have seen Fink further develop this new sound. On the topic of sound, noise manipulator Amon Tobin came back around at the beginning of 2007 with Foley Room, his sixth studio album, and a long player that was called his "darkest work yet". Tobin was inspired by the work of foley artists: a foley room is where the sound effects are recorded for films; foley artists use their imagination and ingenuity to make the right noise for the situation they are presented with. Amon and a team of assistants headed out into the streets with high sensitivity microphones and recorded found sounds from tigers roaring to cats eating rats, from wasps to falling chickpeas, kitchen utensils to motorbikes to water dripping from a tap.
In early 1980, Andrews and Laff recorded as session musicians on Jimmy Pursey's first solo album Imagination Camouflage (1980) (Andrews receiving co-writing credit for two of the LP's songs, Freak Show and Situation's Vacant), before in mid-1980 Andrews and Laff with the bassist Simon Bernal formed the three man post-punk band Empire, with Andrews as the act's lead vocalist. Empire commercially released via the new label Dinosaur Discs, backed by a record shop of the same name at No. 17 Barons Court Road in West Kensington, the song "Hot Seat" (1981), with a B-side entitled "All These Things", which failed to enter the UK Singles Chart. A long-player entitled Expensive Sound (1981), recorded without a producer at Alvic Studios in Barons Court, also failed to enter the UK Album Chart. The band played a handful of gigs around London before Bernal left.
Interview with Tony James, April 2002, for the 'Generation X Anthology' (2003). On commercial sale in October 1980 as a pre- release single from the new band's forthcoming long-player Kiss Me Deadly (1981), 'Dancing with Myself' was a retail failure, reaching only #62 in the UK Singles Chart. In late 1981 Idol, now a solo artist after Gen X had broken up, had Forsey remix the record for its release as a single in the United States, fading down the guitar(s) and bass tracks from their dominance in the 1980 U.K. release and accentuating the vocal and percussion tracks to produce a more rhythmic sound for the American commercial market. It became his first hit single in the United States and launched his career there, two versions being issued: the 3:20 single version (which was later included on Idol's 11 of the Best compilation) and the 4:50 extended version that appeared on Idol's Don't Stop EP.
Cooper and Hammond first worked together in the band, A Primary Industry, during the mid-1980s. Following the split of that band, they formed Ultramarine and released their debut album Folk in April 1990 on the Belgian label Les Disques du Crépuscule. The duo's second long player, Every Man and Woman Is a Star (initially released in 1991 by Brainiak Records and reissued as an expanded version by Rough Trade in 1992), as described by music writer Simon Reynolds in his book Energy Flash as "Perhaps the first and best stab at that seeming contradiction-in-terms, pastoral techno... all sun-ripened, meandering lassitude and undulant dub-sway tempos... like acid-house suffused with the folky-jazzy ambience of the Canterbury scene." Ultramarine in Essex, 2013 Live appearances during this period included a US tour in 1992 with Meat Beat Manifesto and Orbital and US and European tours in 1993 supporting Björk.
The switchover between venues is handled in a clever segue in the opening minute of the track "A Wild and Crazy Guy" which opened Side Two of the original vinyl long-player – Steve reads a bogus financial disclosure report to the audience at The Boarding House nightclub, and when he gets to calculating concert revenues he reveals his desire to make over $2 million on a single show; the audience reaction quickly segues from the enclosed intimacy of The Boarding House to the far more raucous open amphitheatre of Red Rocks near Denver. Martin reprises his role as Georg, one of the Czech Festrunk Brothers (a role he had popularized with Dan Aykroyd on Saturday Night Live) on two tracks – the second half of "A Wild and Crazy Guy" and "You Naive Americans". The album won the Grammy Award in 1979 for Best Comedy Album.Grammy Awards and Nominations for Steve Martin, Grammy.com.
In 1986 Andrews formed a retro-1950s Americana style "beatbox rock'n'roll"/rockabilly band called Westworld, with the singer Elizabeth Westwood and the guitarist/drummer Nick Burton. It had an early hit with its debut single "Sonic Boom Boy", which reached No. 11 in the UK Singles Chart in February 1987, which was subsequently commercially used as a backing music track by Sony for one of its television product advertising campaigns. Between 1986-1990 the band performed as a trio utilizing a drum machine and sequencers with two guitarists, Andrews (lead), Burton (rhythm), fronted by Westwood as the singer, and commercially released in the United Kingdom via R.C.A. six singles, five of which entered the top 80 of the UK Singles Chart: Sonic Boom Boy (1987), Ba-Na-Na-Bam-Boo (1987), Where the Action Is (1987), Silvermac (1987), and Everything Good is Bad (1988). A long-player entitled 'Where the Action Is' reached No. 49 in the UK Albums Chart in September 1987.
In 1996 Andrews joined a provisional new London band consisting of Glenn Matlock, "Rat Scabies" and Gary Twinn called Dead Horse, but the act failed to develop beyond some rehearsals and a demo recording session, after Matlock abandoned it to join the reformation of the Sex Pistols. From this line-up, Andrews and the vocalist Gary Twinn formed a hybrid British-American alternative country act entitled Speedtwinn, which they relocated to Joshua Tree, California in 1998, combining British rock music from the 1970s with American country music.Press release briefing note on 'Speedtwinn', produced by Orange Recordings for the commercial release of the long-player 'California', August 2003. After gigging in small venues in the area, and recording music videos of cover songs ranging from T-Rex to Johnny Cash, they wrote and commercially released in the United States a self-produced album entitled California (2003), which failed to enter the U.S. charts.
Five Guys Walk into a Bar... is a comprehensive four-disc retrospective of the British rock group Faces released in 2004, collecting sixty-seven tracks from among the group's four studio albums, assorted rare single A and B-sides, BBC sessions, rehearsal tapes and one track from a promotional flexi-disc, "Dishevelment Blues" - a deliberately-sloppy studio romp captured during the sessions for their Ooh La La album, which was never actually intended for official release. Eight of ten tracks from 1973's Ooh La La appear (along with a live version of "My Fault"), as do eight of nine from 1971's A Nod Is as Good as a Wink...To a Blind Horse, five of nine from 1971's Long Player (with an additional two in alternative versions) and three of ten from 1970's First Step (originally credited to Small Faces). Other vintage Faces tracks long sought-after by collectors and completists had never been compiled before (such as the studio-recorded US-only single version of their take on Paul McCartney's "Maybe I'm Amazed", or the obscure dobro-driven B-side "Skewiff (Mend the Fuse)"). The song that opens this set, "Flying", is a subtly remixed version of the track which originally appeared on First Step.
Releases include T-Total's version of Brian Eno's "Baby's on Fire" – with guest 'featured vocals' from Soft Cell's Marc Almond – and the debut long player "A Slow Walk Down The Stairs" from Heavy Deviance, themselves favourites of Chris Coco, Mark Rae, Rob Da Bank, KCRW (LA), [Laurent Garnier, Bent, Crazy Penis etc. A Slow Walk Down The Stairs was voted 16th best album of 2005 by M8 Magazine. The label has moved away from its originally exclusive dance release-base to include electropop (T-Total ft Marc Almond), indie folk (Nigel of Bermondsey), ex Gay Dad – nominated for the XFM 2009 New Music Award rock (Hungary's FreshFabrik), indie-dance (Elevator Suite), political satire (Margo Guryan's 16 Words) and breaks (Michael Morph), with collaborations and artist releases from Long Range (Phil Hartnoll from Orbital and Nick Smith]), Yo Majesty, Aquasky, Alex Metric and others. As of November 2009, the label's catalogue comprises approximately 25 releases (singles, 12 inch vinyls and LPs) On 4 December 2009 Hall resigned from the BPI Rights Committee and the IFPI's International Legal Committees citing irreconcilable differences over the industry's approach to file sharing and their support of the draft Digital Economy Bill (DEB) going through the UK parliament at the time.
