The company is based in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, and was founded as LanFan Technologies in February 1986. The Hydra comes with the large book (800+ pages) "Game programming for the propeller powered HYDRA", a CD with extensive software including demo games and a second book by LaMothe, a keyboard, a mouse, a NES keypad, USB and audio/video cables, a 128kB "memory card", an experimenter card and a power supply. The system can be programmed as the target of a PC-hosted IDE or through locally hosted programming languages. Tiny BASIC is included with the system, and the FORTH language is also available. Of course, the Hydra can also be programmed in assembler, and in the Propeller's own built-in Spin programming language.

This was merely a placeholder format for the station until it made its actual premiere on Friday evening, October 29, 2010 with a CHR/Top 40 format as 102.7 Kiss FM, taking on competitor Star 94 WMSR-FM. The station launched with the syndicated Elvis Duran and the Morning Show in mornings, On-Air With Ryan Seacrest middays, and Mike "TicTak" Brandt in afternoons. In August 2015, the station dropped Elvis Duran in mornings for a locally hosted show by station Program Director and afternoon host, TicTak.
