Live action photography began in at Stone Street Studios in Wellington and was scheduled to last 31 days. More than a thousand people worked on the production. In preparation of the filming sequences, all of the actors underwent professional training specific to their characters such as archery, horseback riding, firearm use, and hand-to-hand combat. They received language and dialect training in the Na'vi language created for the film.

Airmen captured after viewing the film reported that they were able to successfully resist German efforts to extract information. The feature-length film was of the highest quality and in recognition the documentary was nominated for an Academy Award in 1944. Animation was an essential and integral component of films produced at Fort Roach. Animation provided FMPU filmmakers with scenarios not possible with live action photography due to technical or secrecy constraints.

For two years, Rosenbaum worked with Cameron in Los Angeles during performance capture and in New Zealand during live action photography. For the third year of the project he returned to New Zealand to help complete the CGI on the movie. In 2010, Rosenbaum was hired by Digital Domain to start a character animation development group. He brought together some of the best computer graphics artists and technicians, and they built a modernized approach to creating physically and behaviorally realistic digital humans and creatures.

Animated sequences, representing certain action scenes, were used instead of regular live action photography. Examples include a futuristic VTOL-style jet representing the escape plane Hagen Arnold uses to escape from Sino-Asia. Another reuses a previous shot from the animated Jonny Quest TV series of an underwater elevator which terminates inside a submarine on the ocean floor. All animated and some live action sequences were further enhanced with either visual haze, wavy imagery, double exposures, reverse-negative images, monochromatic colors, and other optical effects available in the era.

A small live-action model of the required object was built and painted white, while the edges of the model were painted with thin black lines. The object was then filmed as required for the animated scene by moving the model, the camera, or a combination of both, in real-time or using stop-motion animation. The film frames were then printed on paper, showing a model made up of the painted black lines. After the artists had added details to the object not present in the live-action photography of the model, it was xeroxed onto cels.

Three partners, Tim Goldberg, Tim Ellis, and Chuck Sloan, joined forces to create Goldberg Sloan, and made Heidi 4 Paws independently, without financial support from a major studio. The film took over four years to make, and features a blend of live action photography, 3D animation and visual effects.

Lola was founded in January 2004 and is owned and operated by the founders—Edson Williams and Thomas Nittmann. Headquarters are located in Los Angeles with subsidiaries in New York, New Orleans, and London. Lola was the first visual effects company to offer digital cosmetic enhancements to alter an actor’s on-screen film appearance; the service is similar to “photoshopping” a still image of a person but significantly more complex as there are multiple frames, actor movement, lighting changes, and camera moves.
