These included the Keep Hong Kong Clean Campaign, which was promoted using the iconic Lap Sap Chung litterbug character designed by ISD officer Arthur Hacker. The promotion of Boggy Depot led to Jerry Cantrell's first concert experiences as a band frontman which he considered "intimidating." On June 24 in West Palm Beach, Florida, Cantrell began touring for the album with Days of the New and headlining act Metallica on their Poor Re-Touring Me Tour. For his lineup, Cantrell enlisted former Queensrÿche guitarist Chris DeGarmo, Old Lady Litterbug bassist Nick Rhinehart, former Fishbone keyboardist Chris Dowd, and Alice in Chains drummer Sean Kinney. The band also opened for Van Halen on their 1998 summer tour.

In 2015, Pollock formed The National Guard along with Truly guitarist Chris Quinn (later replaced by James Chow), Minus the Bear drummer Erin Tate, and bassist Nick Rhinehart, who previously worked with Pollock's former My Sister's Machine bandmate Owen Wright in the group Old Lady Litterbug. He also played bass for Jerry Cantrell as part of the touring band, which also included Queensrÿche guitarist Chris DeGarmo and Alice in Chains drummer Sean Kinney, for Cantrell's solo debut Boggy Depot. The National Guard have so far released put out two singles, "Inauguration Day" and "Wheel".

One of these early campaigns in Pennsylvania (PENNDOT) some attribute to having coined the term "litterbug," although the National Council of State Garden Clubs representative exhibited a "litter bug" emblem at the first Keep America Beautiful organizational meeting. Others report, however, that the term was coined by Paul B. Gioni, a copywriter in New York City who originated it for the Advertising Council, known as the Ad Council, in 1947. Keep America Beautiful joined with the Ad Council in 1961 to dramatize the idea that every individual must help protect against the effects litter has on the environment.. Gioni came up with the popular television campaign theme in 1963, "Every Litter Bit Hurts." Another campaign in 1964 featured the character Susan Spotless. In 1970, Keep America Beautiful began distributing a free brochure.

Get Up Kids guitarist Jim Suptic's Kansas City, Missouri indie rock band Blackpool Lights is named after the DVD title. Grizzly Tales for Gruesome Kids would begin the recurring feature of using cultural references and naming conventions to add to the humour in the short stories, which would appear in the books that would follow. Wordplay is used on the titles "The Barber of Civil" and possibly "The Childhood Snatcher": the former is a reference to The Barber of Seville, whereas "The Childhood Snatcher" could be a reference to the Child Catcher from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. "The Man with a Chip on his Shoulder" is a literal interpretation of the idiom chip on your shoulder, and "The Litter Bug" is this for the phrase "litterbug", as well as the litter-eating bugs that infest the UK. Ruritania from "The Black Knight" is a country-name frequently used in fiction, based on the fictional country of the same name from The Prisoner of Zenda; Prince Igor is from the neighbouring Draconia, which implied his controlling behaviour. In "The New Nanny", Tristram and Candy's parents—Mr and Mrs Frightfully-Busy—are workaholics, which is why their children are always supervised by Mrs Mac.
