Previously, scientists had analyzed samples taken from the iceman's lower gastrointestinal tract, but by investigating his actual stomach contents, a research team led by Frank Maixner from the Eurac Research Institute for Mummy Studies had an opportunity to study other biomolecules, such as lipids, that are still preserved in Ötzi's stomach but not the lower intestines.

At the end of each nine-day period, the researchers tested levels of a wide range of small molecules in students' blood and urine as indication of their exposure to PM. Students' levels of the stress hormones cortisol, cortisone, epinephrine and norepinephrine rose with dirtier air, as did their levels of blood sugar, amino acids, fatty acids and lipids.

"THD ascorbate is lipid-soluble as well, meaning it penetrates the skin easier than its counterpart — l-ascorbate," Dr. Chappell says; explaining that l-ascorbate, while more commonly used in serums, is water soluble and therefore only affects the surface of the skin since the skin's barrier is made up of hard-to-penetrate oils and lipids.
