Players can protest to the line judge if a decision is not made in their favor.

Clark was hired by the NFL in 2018 as a field judge, and was promoted to referee with the start of the 2020 NFL season following the retirement of Walt Anderson. Clark's 2020 NFL officiating crew consists of umpire Paul King, down judge Tom Stephan, line judge Brian Bolinger, field judge Michael Banks, side judge Keith Washington, back judge Greg Meyer, replay official Carl Madsen, and replay assistant Glenn King.

Boston's father, Byron, is an American football official in the NFL. He was not permitted to officiate regular season games in which David was playing. Byron worked as a line judge for one of his son's preseason games, between the Cardinals and the San Diego Chargers on August 14, 1999. On March 27, 2000, David Boston and Na'il Diggs were traveling northbound in a Hummer on I-71 in Columbus, Ohio.

Historically, American football officials have been men. In 2007, Sarah Thomas became the first woman to officiate a major college football game, working a game between Memphis and Jacksonville State. Thomas later became the first woman to officiate a bowl game when she worked as a line judge during the 2009 Little Caesars Pizza Bowl between Marshall and Ohio. Since then, other women have officiated Division I college football games.

In 2015, Thomas became the NFL's first permanent female official. She entered as a line judge, and moved to the down judge (head linesman) role in her third season. In 2017, she was an alternate in an NFL wild card game. In 2019, she became the first female official to officiate an NFL playoff game in an AFC divisional round between Los Angeles Chargers at New England Patriots.

The Chargers, Broncos and Raiders all finished 8-8, but the Broncos won the AFC West by virtue of tiebreakers. During a game on October 21, 2012, a line judge saw what he thought was a suspicious substance, such as a banned adhesive, on hand towels used by the Charger's players. However, on November 7, the NFL announced that the Chargers did not cheat. Even so, the team was fined $20,000.

Like offside violations, the violating team is penalized 5 yards. # In the NCAA, an encroachment penalty is called, when there is an offensive player beyond the line of scrimmage after the snapper touching the ball. There is no encroachment for defensive players in college football. The head linesman has the duty of watching out for encroachment and other similar infractions, and the line judge assists in this process.

Silva joined the NFL in 1968 as a line judge on legendary referee Jim Tunney's officiating crew and was promoted to referee in 1969. The highlight of Silva's career was being selected as referee for Super Bowl XIV between the Los Angeles Rams and Pittsburgh Steelers in 1980. He would retire following the 1988 NFL season. Silva and Jack Fette, another NFL official, sued the league for age discrimination in 1992.

At the 1996 Wimbledon Finals, his serve hits a line judge, who has an immediate heart attack and dies. Williams falters and loses the championship. At the ceremony following the match, Williams pushes Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent (Howie Mandel), and disappears. Charles Poole is a British child prodigy forced into a tennis career by his domineering mother (Mary Steenburgen), who threatens to disown him if he loses.

During his career, Seeman officiated 15 playoff games, two Pro Bowls, and two Super Bowls. Seeman died on November 24, 2013, at his home in Blaine, Minnesota after a three-and- a-half year battle with cancer. Seeman was married to wife Marilyn and had three sons: Jeff, Jon, and Michael. His son, Jeff Seeman, is also an NFL official and has worked as a line judge since 2002.

They originally met at a WTA tournament in Athens where his mother was competing and his father was a line judge. Stefanos has three younger siblings: two brothers Petros and Pavlos (Paul), and a sister Elisavet who is the youngest. All of his siblings are also tennis players. With their strong backgrounds in tennis, Tsitsipas's parents got their oldest son started on tennis at a very young age.

SMU won, 20–14, and went to the Rose Bowl. He was the varsity baseball coach at SMU from 1965 to 1976. Finley was also a football official who worked in the Southwest Conference. He officiated professional football as an umpire and as a referee, one of nine on-field officials to serve in the American Football League (AFL) for its entire ten- year existence, 1960 through 1969. He also was a referee in the National Football League in 1970, the first season following the AFL–NFL merger. Finley retired following the 1970 season; his last game was a Pittsburgh Steelers- Philadelphia Eagles matchup at Franklin Field December 20. Finley's 1970 crew included umpire Lou Palazzi, head linesman Cal Lepore, line judge Art Holst, back judge Grover Klemmer and field judge Bob Wortman. Finley wore uniform number 14 in 1970, which was claimed by line judge and future referee Gene Barth in 1971.

When the NFL began play, only three officials (referee, umpire, and head linesman) were used. The field judge was added in 1929 and the back judge in 1947. In response to scrambling quarterbacks (Fran Tarkenton in particular), the line judge was added in 1965 to watch the opposite side of the line of scrimmage. The side judge was added for 1978, when the NFL implemented new rules to open up the passing game.

He was also the alternate referee of Super Bowl XLV, which was held on February 6, 2011 in Arlington, Texas. Boger has not received an on- field postseason assignment since officiating Super Bowl XLVII. He and his family (including his late wife, Kay) have operated the Locker Room Sporting Goods store in Jeffersonville since the early 1960s.

During turnovers, punts, and other returns by the defense, and play transitions from one direction to the other, the officials must also adjust. The field judge, side judge, and back judge become the trail/back positions, and the referee, head linesman/down judge, and line judge then become the lead/front positions. The umpire, in his traditional position in the middle of the field, usually stays stationary until the returner and the other players pass him.

Jerome Leonard Boger ( ; born July 1, 1955) is an American football official in the National Football League (NFL) since the 2004 NFL season. He wears uniform number 23 since 2006; before that, he wore uniform number 109. He started in the league as a line judge and was promoted to referee in 2006 after two seasons. Along with Gene Steratore, he was one of two new referees for 2006, replacing retired officials Bernie Kukar and Tom White.

On November 12, 2011, Thomas became the first woman to officiate in a Big Ten stadium, working as a line judge when Northwestern hosted Rice. When asked about the challenges associated with being a football referee, Thomas claimed there have "not been any challenges" being a female in football and stated, "Everybody has been very professional, and they look at me just like another official", aiding in Sarah's defense to be viewed as equal to her colleagues.

The 49ers went on to score a touchdown on the next play, en route to a 34–28 win. Ronald J. "Ron" Winter (born February 6, 1946) is a retired American football official who officiated in the National Football League (NFL) from the 1995 through 2013 seasons. Winter previously served as a football official for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Winter wore uniform No. 14 (previously No. 82, 1995–1997). Winter's 2013 NFL officiating crew consisted of umpire Carl Paganelli, head linesman Jim Howey, line judge Gary Arthur, field judge Scott Steenson, side judge Tom Hill, and back judge Greg Steed.

Royal Jenesen Cathcart (April 8, 1926 – February 5, 2012) was an American football halfback who played for the San Francisco 49ers. He played college football at the University of California, Santa Barbara, having previously attended Long Beach Polytechnic High School in Long Beach, California. He was the brother of Sam Cathcart, who also played for the 49ers. Cathcart also was a line judge and side judge in the National Football League for 16 seasons from 1971 through 1986, wearing uniform number 16.

Parry was promoted to referee for the 2007 season following the retirement of Bill Vinovich due to health issues. In 2018, Parry's NFL officiating crew consisted of umpire Mark Pellis, down judge David Oliver, line judge Julian Mapp, field judge Matt Edwards, side judge Michael Banks, back judge Perry Paganelli, replay official Jimmy Oldham, and replay assistant Roddy Ames. Parry retired on April 1, 2019, to accept a position with ESPN to be the rules analyst for Monday Night Football.

For professional and college football games, an auxiliary chain crew operates on the opposite side of the field, supervised by the line judge. Their presence lets players and officials look to either side of the field for information. The auxiliary chain crew also includes the drive start indicator, which is placed at the beginning of a team's drive and stays there until the team loses possession. This indicator is only used for statistical purposes to calculate the distance of each drive.

He was in the panel of referees for the 2008 Rugby Union Junior World Championship; five years later also as head referee. He also gained experience in female test matches, including the 2010 World Cup. At the representative level, he made his debut in the Georgia-Romania match in March 2009 in the 2008 European Nations Cup of Nations 2008-2010 and in the following years he also appeared in this competition. In addition to conducting representation meetings, he was also a line judge.

Novak was hired by the NFL in 2014 as a field judge, and was promoted to referee with the start of the 2019 NFL season following the retirements of Pete Morelli and Walt Coleman. He is the first NFL official to wear the uniform number 1. Novak's 2020 NFL officiating crew consists of umpire Ramon George, down judge Derick Bowers, line judge Walt Coleman IV, field judge Mike Weatherford, side judge Jonah Monroe, back judge Terrence Miles, replay official Matt Sumstine, and replay assistant Kevin Brown.

Dean Zachary Look (born July 23, 1937) is an American former football and baseball player. He played college football as quarterback at Michigan State University and professional football for the New York Titans of the American Football League (AFL). He was also a Major League Baseball (MLB) outfielder, and on-field official in the National Football League (NFL). He is most notable for his 29 years of service as an NFL official: first as line judge in 1972 and as side judge in 1978.

After retiring from International and club rugby, Arthur was a line judge and was Chairman of the Wales Selectors and remained involved in Cardiff Rugby Club. He had been appointed Head Teacher of Ninian Park Junior school in Grangetown, not long before his death from a heart attack in July 1948. Cornish Close, in Cardiff's Grangetown (where Arthur and his family were from), is named for Arthur and his four brothers, who were known locally for their contribution to rugby, baseball and cricket within the city.

Dick Jorgensen, who had been the referee in the previous season's Super Bowl XXIV, was diagnosed in May during the offseason with a rare blood disorder. He died five months later on October 10. For the remainder of the 1990 season, NFL officials wore a black armband on their left sleeve with the white number 60 to honor Jorgensen. Ben Dreith (a referee in the AFL from 1966-69, and the NFL since the merger) and Fred Wyant (a referee since 1971), were demoted to line judge.

The first successful public demonstration of a computerized device to make automated line calls at a professional tennis tournament was in 1974. (The Electroline-control computer pictured at the right). This original tennis electronic line judge device, invented by Geoffrey Grant, an avid tennis player, and Robert Nicks, an electronics engineer, was used in the championship finals of both the Men’s World Championship Tennis in Dallas in May, 1974 and the Ladies’ Virginia Slims tour in Los Angeles.Electronic Design Magazine 9 April 26, 1976, p55-57.

The Hawk-Eye Innovations website states that the system performs with an average error of . The standard diameter of a tennis ball is , equating to a 5% error relative to ball diameter. This is roughly equivalent to the fluff on the ball. Hawk-Eye is currently developing a technology called 'Hawk-Eye Live', which will use the 10 cameras to call shots in or out in real time, with an 'out' call being signified by a speaker emitting an 'out' sound that emulates a human line judge.

Botchan's officiating career began in 1972 after moving away from coaching and until 1976 was working high school and junior college football games. He was assigned two games as an umpire in the Pac-10 between 1976 and 1979 before applying and being accepted to the NFL in 1980. In 1980, Botchan joined the NFL as a line judge because no openings were available as an umpire. As a rookie, he received a rare opportunity to officiate a playoff game due to having a successful season.

He was born in Philadelphia, and died in Miami. Kelleher worked 10 consecutive seasons (1977-86) of his career on the crew of Jerry Markbreit (Markbreit was a rookie line judge in 1976 on the crew of referee Tommy Bell, with Kelleher as back judge), who later became the only official to work four Super Bowls (XVII, XXI, XXVI, XXIX) at the referee position. Kelleher's final season, he worked on the crew of Gordon McCarter. Kelleher was a member of Bell’s crew from 1965-76.

Russian sixth seed Dmitry Tursunov was expelled from the tournament by the ATP after he stormed off the court in his doubles' first round match, dismayed at a decision from the line judge, as Simone Bolelli and Andreas Seppi led him and partner Chris Haggard 6–4, 3–1. While Tursunov was expected to receive a fine, the ATP decided to deliver a more severe punishment, withdrawing him from the singles event. His scheduled second round opponent, Thomas Johansson, was given a walkover into the quarterfinals.

At Wimbledon in 2003, Rusedski was playing in a second-round match against Andy Roddick. Roddick had won the first two sets, but Rusedski was 5–2 up in the third set. During a point on Roddick's service game, a member of the crowd loudly called one of Roddick's shots long, causing Rusedski to stop playing the point as he believed it was a line judge. The umpire ruled that the ball was good and that, as Roddick's next shot landed in court, Roddick was awarded the point.

As a line judge, Quirk ruled that Majkowski's body had crossed the line of scrimmage, which under rules was an illegal forward pass, nullifying the touchdown and turning over the ball to Chicago. The play was reviewed by the replay official, Bill Parkinson. Parkinson relied on the view supplied by a fixed camera on the roof of the stadium to review the play. After a four minutes and 54 seconds, he ruled the ball was still behind the line, overruling Quirk's call, and giving the Packers the score.

In gridiron football, an official is a person who has responsibility in enforcing the rules and maintaining the order of the game. During professional and most college football games, seven officials operate on the field. Since 2015, Division I college football conferences have used eight game officials, the Alliance of American Football (AAF) in its only season in 2019 and the 2020 version of the XFL have used eight game officials.

The line judge (L or LJ) assists the head linesman/down judge at the other end of the line of scrimmage, looking for possible offsides, encroachment and other fouls before the snap. As the play develops, he is responsible for the action near his sideline, including whether a player is out of bounds. He is also responsible for counting offensive players. During the start of passing plays, he is responsible for watching the receivers near his sideline to a point five to seven yards beyond the line of scrimmage.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton demanded her release. On April 6, her parents were allowed a 30-minute visit to Saberi in Evin Prison, where she was being held. On April 8, the Iranian government charged Saberi with espionage, while the Iranian Students News Agency, quoting a hard-line judge who is the deputy head of Iran's prosecutor's office, said Saberi had "accepted" the accusation of espionage. Saberi's father, who was in Iran at the time but was not allowed into the courtroom, told NPR his daughter was coerced into making incriminating statements.

Before the game, many linesmen attach a piece of tape at the midpoint of the chain. The linesman can compare the line of scrimmage to this mark at the start of a play and know whether a 5-yard penalty against the defense will result in a first down. If so, the linesman's typical hand signal to the line judge across the field is to extend the arms with the thumbs pointing toward one another. Such a gesture with thumbs pointing away signals that there are more than 5 yards to gain.

In 2013, Thomas became one of 21 finalists in contention for a permanent NFL officiating position. Thomas worked New Orleans Saints scrimmages, and was part of the NFL officiating development program, spending three days at the Indianapolis Colts minicamp. On April 8, 2015, the NFL officially announced that Thomas would become the first permanent female official in NFL history. Thomas made her NFL regular season debut in a game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Houston Texans at NRG Stadium on September 13, 2015, as part of Pete Morelli's crew as the line judge.

The 2008 Humanitarian Bowl kicked off at 2:30 p.m. Mountain Time on Tuesday, December 30, 2008 in front of a crowd of 26,781 spectators at Bronco Stadium in Boise, Idaho. The weather conditions were cloudy with a temperature of 38 °F (3 °C) and wind at eight mph (12.9 km/h) from the southeast. The officiating staff consisted of referee Clair Gausman, umpire Rico Orsot, linesman Cal McNeill, line judge Gary McNanna, back judge Tom Bessant, field judge Shane Standley, side judge Kim Nelson, and scorer Mike Cannon.

On November 5, 1989, the Packers beat the Bears 14–13, but not without controversy. Don Majkowski led the Packers to a comeback and a game-winning touchdown pass to Sterling Sharpe with less than a minute left to play. Initially the play was called a touchdown, but line judge Jim Quirk had called a penalty on Majkowski for being beyond the line of scrimmage when he threw the pass. With a nervous and tense crowd at Lambeau Field, the call went up to the instant replay official, Bill Parkinson.

Then the line judge, a Big Ten official, came running in raising his hands signaling that White had scored This touchdown has become known as White's "Phantom Touchdown" as he was awarded the score after first fumbling, and entered the end-zone without the ball. This has been confirmed by White himself. The touchdown put USC up 14–3 and they added a field goal before halftime. The only score in the second half was an extended play by Michigan in the third quarter that resulted in a 44-yard touchdown pass.

Ground communication arrangements were made according to the manual Appendices covered Engineer work on roads, rail, tramways and water supply; intelligence arrangements covered the use balloons, contact aeroplanes, Forward Observation Officers, prisoners, returning wounded, neighbouring formations and wireless eavesdropping. Corps Observers were attached to brigades, to patrol forward once the black line was reached, to observe the area up to the green line, judge the morale of the Germans opposite and see if they were preparing to counter-attack or retire, passing the information to a divisional Advanced Report Centre.

Bell wore uniform number 7 throughout his NFL career. The number was not used during the 1977 and 1978 NFL seasons; fellow referee Fred Silva took the number in 1979 and wore it through his retirement in 1988. Ron Blum, who wore number 83 as a line judge from 1985 through 1992, changed to No. 7 upon his promotion to referee in 1993 and wore it through his retirement in 2007, even though he returned to his original position for his final four NFL seasons. Side judge Keith Washington currently wears No. 7.

The reigning champions Zhang and Gao held on to their title, but only just. They started the match in scintillating form, steamrollering their way through the first set to take a 1-0 lead. The second set saw Robertson and Emms change to a more attacking style that saw them put out a lead of 6-1 then 10-6. Zhang was playing nervously and a line judge called one of his shots long to which he made a protest to the umpire, who did not have the authority to overrule the call.

When McKenzie walked away from Hall to report the foul to referee Pete Morelli, Hall confronted both him and Morelli with more expletives, before being escorted away by Carlsen, line judge John Hussey, and other Washington teammates. Hall was assessed two fouls, ejected from the game, and was later fined $30,000. In the days following the incident, McKenzie claimed that Hall gave him death threats, which prompted the foul, and ejection. Hall retaliated saying that the threats were not issued, and McKenzie was equally at fault for the incident.

He was the referee in the January 18, 2015 AFC Championship game, known for the deflategate controversy. Anderson cites Super Bowl XXXV as being his most memorable game. Anderson refereed the final NFL game in San Diego, a Kansas City Chiefs win over the Chargers.

Nadal opted to miss the US Open, preferring to focus on the upcoming clay- court season, while Federer was forced to withdraw due to a knee injury. Wrolstad was hired by the NFL in 2003 as a field judge, and was promoted to referee with the start of the 2014 NFL season following the retirements of Ron Winter and Scott Green. Wrolstad wore uniform number 89 as a field judge, then switched to number 4 upon his promotion. Number 4 was previously worn by Bruce Finlayson, Bill Kingzett and Doug Toole. Wrolstad's 2020 NFL officiating crew consists of umpire Steve Woods, down judge Patrick Turner, line judge Tripp Sutter, field judge Terry Brown, side judge Jeff Lamberth, back judge Scott Helverson, replay official Kevin Stine, and replay assistant Gavin Anderson.

McCarter was the referee in a regular season game between the Minnesota Vikings and Pittsburgh Steelers on September 24, 1995 at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh. Just before halftime on a Minnesota field goal attempt, line judge Ben Montgomery called a penalty on Pittsburgh for having 12 players on the field, a violation of the rules. Minnesota was able to score a field goal as a result of the penalty. Pittsburgh head coach Bill Cowher counted 11 players on the field, and in disgust, printed a photo to prove that 11 players were on the field.

He retired from the NFL following the 1976 AFC Championship Game between the Oakland Raiders and Pittsburgh Steelers, played December 26, 1976, to conclude a fifteen-year career in the league. Bell was given a choice of officiating the AFC Championship game or Super Bowl XI as his final NFL game by then-Director of Officiating Art McNally. When Bell chose the former, Jim Tunney was selected as the referee for his second Super Bowl. His successor as a referee, Jerry Markbreit, was the line judge on Bell's crew in 1976, Markbreit's rookie year in the NFL.

The NFL soon passed a rule all officials' gloves had to be black. That game is more memorable, however, for the antics in the broadcast booth, where Howard Cosell threw up on Don Meredith's boots and had to leave Franklin Field at halftime. Vest worked the 1970 AFC divisional playoff game between the Miami Dolphins and Oakland Raiders, and the 1971 AFC Championship Game between the Dolphins and Baltimore Colts. His crew for the 1971 season included umpire Frank Sinkovitz, head linesman Leo Miles, line judge Bruce Alford, back judge John Steffen, and field judge Tony Skover.

After the war, he returned to the University of Texas where he teamed with quarterback Bobby Layne, and was a member of Alpha Tau Omega. He was the ninth-round draft choice of the Chicago Bears in 1948. He never played professional football, but became an on-field official, and was a line judge in the American Football League in 1966 and 1967. He later wrote several books, including We Band of Brothers; Mamas, Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Play Football; A Time For All Reasons; and All Things Considered... It's Been a Good Life.

The umpire has the right to overrule a line judge or a net judge if the umpire is sure that a clear mistake has been made. In past tournaments, line judges tasked with calling the serve were sometimes assisted by electronic sensors that beeped to indicate an out-of-bounds serve; one such system was called "Cyclops". Cyclops has since largely been replaced by the Hawk-Eye system. In professional tournaments using this system, players are allowed three unsuccessful appeals per set, plus one additional appeal in the tie-break to challenge close line calls by means of an electronic review.

McElwee was the referee for Super Bowl XXXIV McElwee joined the NFL in 1976 as a line judge and became a referee for the start of the 1980 NFL season. He was the referee for three Super Bowls (XXII in 1988, XXVIII in 1994, and XXXIV in 2000) and has officiated in numerous playoff games. McElwee is one of only 6 referees who have officiated 3 or more Super Bowls, along with Norm Schachter, Jim Tunney, Pat Haggerty, Jerry Markbreit and Terry McAulay. He is also the only referee to officiate a Super Bowl in 3 different decades.

Cyclops is a computer system co-invented by the British inventor Bill Carlton of Great Britain and Margaret Parnis England of Malta,Roberts, John. Cyclops has company as machine moves to replace net cord judge. The Independent (23 November 1995) which is used on the ATP and WTA professional tennis tours as an electronic line judge to help determine whether a serve is in or out. The system, which must be activated by the service line umpire before each serve, projects five or six infra-red horizontal beams of light along the court 10 mm above the ground.

He became a referee on a part-time basis during the 2004 NFL season when referee Johnny Grier was injured. Green became a full-time referee at the start of the 2005 NFL season after Grier was forced to retire due to a leg injury. Green's first experience as an NFL referee came on October 3, 2004 during a game between the New England Patriots and the Buffalo Bills. Green's 2013 NFL officiating crew consisted of umpire Bruce Stritesky, head linesman Tom Stabile, line judge Mike Spanier, field judge Boris Cheek, side judge Larry Rose, and back judge Scott Helverson.

He oversees the day-to- day operations of the officiating department and is the primary contact for coaches' and general managers' officiating questions, among other duties. The NFL and the NFL Referees Association agreed on August 9 to allow officials to opt out of working the 2020 season. Officials who opted out received a $30,000 stipend and guaranteed job protection to return for the 2021 season. Five on- field officials – line judge Jeff Bergman, back judge Steve Freeman, field judge Greg Gautreaux, field judge Joe Larrew, and back judge Tony Steratore – opted out for the season by the August 13 deadline.

Carey was a respected official in the NFL for his thorough pre-game preparation, professional demeanor, and fair play. In a poll conducted by ESPN in 2008, Carey tied with referee Ed Hochuli for most "best referee" votes among NFL head coaches. He had also ejected the most players in the league among current referees, as of 2002, including incidents involving Sean Taylor and Terrell Suggs. In his nineteenth year as referee with the 2013 NFL season, Carey's officiating crew consisted of umpire Chad Brown, head linesman Mark Baltz, line judge Tim Podraza, field judge Mike Weir, side judge Doug Rosenbaum and back judge Kirk Dornan.

Hochuli began officiating Pop Warner football games as a law student to earn additional income, which was suggested by one of his former high school coaches as "a way to stay in touch with the game". His interest in officiating carried over into baseball, where he was a Little League Baseball umpire from 1970 to 1973. Progressing to the high school level in 1973, he focused on football, and officiated games in the Tucson area until 1985. In addition to high school officiating, he worked college football games for the Big Sky Conference and Pacific-10 Conference as a line judge during the 1980s.

In 2017, the NFL renamed the head linesman to down judge. Up until 1950, the forerunner leagues to the present-day Canadian Football League (founded in 1958) used only four officials: The referee, umpire, head linesman and line judge. Over the next 40 years, the system would change into what is more-or-less equal to what most American football leagues use today, a seven-official system. The first new addition to the crew was the field judge (also referred to as the back umpire) in 1951, then the next addition being the back judge in 1979, and the seventh official, the side judge being added in 1991.

In his first year in the NFL, Seeman worked as a line judge before moving to head linesman and eventually referee, a position he held from 1979 until the conclusion of the 1990 NFL season. His retirement from officiating in 1991 after serving as referee in Super Bowl XXV was prompted by being appointed to the Senior Director of Officiating by Commissioner Paul Tagliabue, replacing Art McNally who spent 31 seasons as an NFL official and in the front office. On June 30, 2001, Seeman retired as Senior Director of Officiating and was succeeded by Mike Pereira. Seeman was later employed by the NFL as an observer for Sunday games.

College games outside the Division I level use six or seven officials. Arena football, high school football, and other levels of football have other officiating systems, which use less than the standard seven officials. High school football played under the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) rules typically use five officials for varsity and 3, 4, or 5 for non-varsity games. Gordon McCarter (May 26, 1931 − December 20, 2002) was an American football official in the National Football League (NFL) from 1967 to 1995. He joined the NFL as a line judge and back judge (now known as the field judge) in 1967 before being promoted to referee with the start of the 1974 NFL season when Jack Reader was named Assistant Supervisor of Officials at NFL headquarters in New York City. McCarter is most likely remembered for a 1995 game in which Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Bill Cowher stuffed a Polaroid photo in McCarter's uniform pocket while leaving the field. McCarter wore the uniform number 48 for the majority of his career.

Hussey was promoted to the referee position for the start of the 2015 NFL season following the retirement of referee Bill Leavy. His first NFL career game as referee in 2015 was on September 13 in Tampa Bay where he officiated the Tennessee Titans and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Hussey was the referee in the Detroit Lions' 18-16 surprise victory over the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, WI on November 15, 2015, their first in the state of Wisconsin since 1991. Hussey's 2020 NFL officiating crew consists of umpire Alan Eck, down judge Sarah Thomas, line judge Carl Johnson, field judge Allen Baynes, side judge Jabir Walker, back judge Brad Freeman, replay official Jamie Nicholson, and replay assistant Denise Crudup.

The Dallas Cowboys finished atop the NFC East with a 12-4 record. On January 4, 2015, Hitchens played in his first career playoff game and recorded three combined tackles and deflected a pass, as the Cowboys defeated the Detroit Lions 24-20 in the wildcard playoff game against the Detroit Lions. Hitchens was involved in heavily controversial play during the fourth quarter after the back judge threw a flag and penalized Hitchens for pass interference for making contact and pushing off of Lions' tight end Brandon Pettigrew as he attempted to catch a deep pass by Matt Stafford. The line judge ultimately chose to overturn the penalty and the flag was disregarded without an immediate explanation on the field.

He is best known for his athletic/muscular physique (height: ; weight: ), and for explaining on-field rulings in a manner that is comprehensive yet also clear and concise. In a poll conducted by ESPN in 2008, Hochuli tied fellow referee Mike Carey for "best referee" votes (eight each) among NFL head coaches. In his 28th season in the league and 26th as a referee (crew chief) with the 2017 NFL season, Hochuli's officiating crew consisted of umpire Shawn Smith, down judge Greg Bradley, line judge Rusty Baynes, field judge Dale Shaw, side judge Alex Kemp, and back judge Scott Helverson. After the retirements of Gerald Austin and Larry Nemmers following the 2007 season, Hochuli became the NFL's longest-tenured referee for the next decade.

As Elder crossed the Duke 16 yard line, teammate Artie Burns threw a block against a Duke defender, prompting the line judge to throw a flag. After Elder trotted into the end zone, the officiating crew immediately declared a video review and announced the flag as an illegal block in the back by Miami, which would have negated the touchdown and forced Miami to run a final untimed play from its own 8 yard line. However, after a lengthy review, the officiating crew declared that all of the laterals were legal, that no Miami ball carrier had gone down, and that the illegal block they had initially called was legal. The touchdown thus stood and resulted in a 30–27 Miami victory.

Gordon Riese is a former college baseball pitcher in the 1960s who was inducted into the Portland State University Hall of Fame in 1997. He has spent the last 28 years as a Pac-10 Conference football official. He was the line judge during the 1982 Stanford-California game when "The Play" helped California win, 25-20. Many Stanford fans argue to this day that a forward lateral was made, and that a Cal player’s knee was down before his lateral, either of which by itself would have resulted in Stanford winning the game. Riese later worked as a referee in the Pac-10 and was the head of the officiating crew that worked the first Bowl Championship Series championship game, the Fiesta Bowl between Florida State and Tennessee on January 4, 1999.

Before that, he was the alternate referee of Super Bowl XLVII, which was played in New Orleans on February 3, 2013. He entered the NFL as a line judge in 1995, and later was promoted to referee in 1998 after Dale Hamer returned to the head linesman position and Gary Lane returned to the side judge position. In his first playoff assignment as a referee, Winter refereed the New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers Wild Card playoff game in January, 2003. In this game, back judge Scott Green did not realize that New York's Rich Seubert had lined up legally in a receiver's spot and failed to call a defensive pass interference foul against him during a failed field goal attempt, instead penalizing him for ineligible receiver downfield. Commissioner Paul Tagliabue described the situation as the most disappointing officiating blunder he'd seen in his years as NFL commissioner and announced that officiating mechanics surrounding field-goal attempts and last plays of games would be changed.

Georgia had a 10–2 record as the AP College Football Poll ranked the Bulldogs No. 12 in the country. During the season, Crowell had some breakout performances, such as his 30 carries, 147 yard-outing against Ole Miss on September 24 in Oxford, Mississippi as Georgia won 27–13. Crowell followed up the Ole Miss performance with 104 yards rushing against Mississippi State on October 1 as Georgia defeated the MSU Bulldogs, 24–10. He apparently had scored on a 49-yard touchdown run in the contest, but that play was cut short to only 14 yards after the line judge had determined that Crowell's shoe had just touched the sideline — it appeared to be very close according to video replay. On October 8 at Knoxville, Tennessee, Crowell ran into a stout Tennessee defense as he scored two touchdowns but was contained to 19 rushes for 58 yards and two receptions for five yards.

He was given three code violations for audible obscenities and racket-smashing at the 2014 US Open (one more would have disqualified him), fined $4,926 for audible obscenities and racket-smashing at the 2015 Australian Open, fined $12,470 for unsportsmanlike conduct and $2,625 for swearing at 2015 Wimbledon, fined $4,370 for swearing at the 2016 Australian Open (he also took a phone call while on court during a mixed doubles match), fined $6,200 for swearing at the 2016 French Open, and fined $8,690 for swearing at the 2016 Wimbledon. Vinovich began officiating football at the high school and small-college level; he then officiated in the Canadian Football League and Arena Football League, followed by the Mountain West Conference of NCAA Division I. In the NFL, he wears uniform number 52. Due to a heart condition, Bill Vinovich retired from field duty as an NFL official prior to the 2007 season, to serve as the replay official for Ed Hochuli.

Brad Allen is an American football official in the National Football League (NFL) since the 2014 NFL season, wearing uniform number 122. A native of Lumberton, North Carolina (and a graduate of The University of North Carolina at Pembroke, formerly Pembroke State University), Allen began officiating football games at the high school, and later, ACC, levels. This was the first Rose Bowl since the beginning of the Big Ten–Pacific 10 (originally the Pacific Coast Conference) contract that officials from a neutral conference (in this case, the Southeastern Conference) were used. From 1947 through 1991, a split crew of Big Ten and Pac-10 (Pac-8/AAWU/PCC; now Pac-12) officials were used. From 1984, the first year a seven-man officiating crew was used, through 1991, the conference of the designated home team provided the referee, back judge, one wing official on the line of scrimmage (head linesman or line judge) and one deep wing official (field judge or side judge), and the other conference provided the umpire, one wing official on the line of scrimmage and one deep wing official. The Rose Bowl was the last bowl to use split officiating crews; most bowl games abandoned them in favor of neutral officials in the 1970s, although the Orange Bowl used a split crew from the SEC and Big Ten for its 1978 game.

In a bizarre change of mind the line judge then corrected his call; Robertson then made his own protest to no avail and the Chinese won back the serve. They pulled back two points to make it 8-10 but after a couple more exchanges of serves the British had set point at 14-10. However they couldn't immediately capitalise on this and Zhang and Gao pulled back to 12-14 but on their next serve the Chinese hit the return long to give Robertson and Emms the set and tie the match at 1-1. The start of the third set saw the Chinese power their way to an early 3-0 lead and after an exchange of serves the British this time got a close line call in their favour to regain the serve and register a point. Again the service changed hands a couple of times but Robertson and Emms then took a 5-3 lead and on their next set of serves extended this to 7-3 with the Chinese trying every time-wasting trick in the book.

Jerry Markbreit (born March 23, 1935) is a former American football referee in the National Football League (NFL) for 23 seasons and became one of the most recognizable referees in the game. Markbreit officiated football games for 43 seasons. From 1965 to 1975, Markbreit officiated college football games in the Big Ten Conference. He then joined the NFL in 1976 as a line judge on the crew of Tommy Bell before being promoted to the head referee position in just his second year. His uniform number in the league was 9, which is now worn by Mark Perlman. In his 23 seasons in the NFL (he retired after the 1998 season), Markbreit had 25 postseason assignments: two wild card games (1991 and 1994), 10 divisional games (1979, 1981, 1982, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1995, 1997, 1998), eight conference championships (1980, 1983, 1984, 1989, 1990, 1992, 1993, and 1996), one Pro Bowl (1978), and four Super Bowls: Super Bowl XVII, Super Bowl XXI, Super Bowl XXVI, and Super Bowl XXIX and was an alternate in Super Bowl XIX, Super Bowl XXII, and Super Bowl XXVIII.
