Lightlessness Is Nothing New is the third LP by rock band Maps & Atlases, released on June 1, 2018 through Barsuk Records. It is the first release by the band following a six-year hiatus from recording.

Lightlessness Is Nothing New was announced on April 4, 2018, following teases through Maps & Atlases' social media channels. Alongside the announcement, the group released the record's first single, "Fall Apart," and a 2018 North American tour schedule. On April 25, 2018, the group released a second single from Lightlessness Is Nothing New, titled "4/25," as a video on their Instagram account. Shot during the band's short Japan tour in late 2017 and early 2018, the video features Davison framed among Japanese city streets, architecture and nature scenes.

On April 5, 2018, Maps & Atlases announced a new record, Lightlessness Is Nothing New, scheduled for release on June 1 through Barsuk Records—the group's first record in six years following 2012's Beware and Be Grateful. Alongside the announcement, the band released a single from the record, "Fall Apart," and plans for a North American promotional tour. Regarding the writing process, Davison said that Lightlessness took form as a Maps & Atlases record when he enlisted Hainey and Dada to play on one of Davison's solo releases: "[T]hat was when I realized that maybe this doesn’t need be a solo release. I like playing with Chris and Shiraz, and I’m asking them to play stuff on it, so I don’t know why it would be a solo record.” Davison also stated that Lightlessness is thematically inspired by his conflicting emotions in the wake of father's death: > "It’s not some binary thing.

Photochemically inscribed where the black of lightlessness breaks into bands and fields of reds, oranges, yellows, and white- which contains all possible color, where exposed, the result is the visible form of a coincidence among time exposure, light radiation, environment conditions and chance. Stripped of all external subject matter, the actual object of these photographs is the language of photography itself, not signifying the given but the possible, the embrace of all possible images.
