Independent Enquiry Study (IES; ), which is adopted as the school-based assessment (SBA), counting as 20% of students’ total result in Liberal Studies and sharing one-third of teaching hours, is a compulsory public examination component of the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) offered by Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority (HKEAA) since 2009. Miller graduated from Washington & Jefferson College in 1980 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics.
Koehler-Pentacoff was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and grew up in nearby Oconomowoc. She moved to California as a teenager to attend college. She chose a double major in children's theater and liberal studies and graduated from California State University Fresno in 1979. She married Robert Pentacoff in 1981, taught elementary and middle school and directed children's theater before turning to freelance writing for magazines and newspapers.
From 1986–2012, Bruce taught English and Liberal Studies at Seneca College. In the 1980s, for four years he was poetry and poetry reviews editor and columnist for Toronto-based Cross Canada Writers' Quarterly. He has also taught creative writing at the Banff Centre and York University. Now retired from teaching, Bruce writes full-time in addition to hosting readings and workshops on creativity and disability.

In 1970, Kies was a library career consultant at the Illinois State Careers Center. She was New York-based a public relations consultant, teacher, and author in 1975. Kies earned a Doctor of Liberal Studies from Columbia University in 1977. Her dissertation was titled Unofficial relations, personal reliance, informal influence, communication, and the library staff: a sociometric investigation of three medium-sized public libraries.

Anne Heaton is an American pop-influenced folk singer-songwriter and pianist from New York City. She majored in liberal studies at the Notre Dame, and grew up in the Chicago suburb of Wilmette. John R. Hale (born 1951) is an American archaeologist and historian. He is a highly regarded professor and field archeologist, and Director of the Liberal Studies Program at the University of Louisville. He lectures widely for the public on topics in classicism, ancient history, and archeology and his archeological fieldwork has been featured in a number of documentary films for the Discovery Channel and the History channel.

Born in Arlington County, Virginia, Purcell earned her bachelor's degree in painting from the Corcoran School of Art and George Washington University in 1973, after independent study in Mexico from 1969 to 1971. Three years into his career at Hartford Seminary, Richardson was given an honorary M.A. from Amherst College, which was common practice for the institution at the time (given to graduates who had furthered their professional or liberal studies for two or more years). Richardson was promoted to librarian with faculty rank in 1884, and again in 1888 to associate professor. He received an honorary PhD from Washington and Jefferson College for his work in bibliography on June 13, 1988.

Southeastern University was established by YMCA and chartered by an Act of Congress in 1879. It had degree programs in Criminal Justice, Child Development, Public Administration, Business Management, Accounting, Finance, Liberal Studies, Computer Science, and Allied Health, a program initiated in 2006 at Greater Southeast Community Hospital.
Georgetown's origins are in the establishment of the Maryland colony in the seventeenth-century. Bishop John Carroll established the school at its present location by the Potomac River after the American Revolution allowed for free religious practice. The role of the Society of Jesus in the school's operation has evolved from that of founders and financiers to faculty and advisers. Their focus on liberal studies and religious pluralism have helped to give the school its identity.

Porter was born in New York City on October 29, 1935. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Swarthmore College in 1958, and a Ph.D. in Classics from Princeton University in 1962. After graduation he taught Classics, Music, and Liberal Arts at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, served as Visiting Professor of Classics at Princeton, and returned to Carleton as President. The Lionel Hampton School of Music is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. It was founded as a department in 1893, just four years after the University of Idaho came into existence. It was elevated to school status in 1969. Gail Levin (born 1948) is an American art historian, biographer, artist, and a Distinguished Professor of Art History, American Studies, Women's Studies, and Liberal Studies at Baruch College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. She is a specialist in the work of Edward Hopper, feminist art, abstract expressionism, Eastern European Jewish influences on modernist art and American modernist art. Levin served as the first curator of the Hopper Collection at the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Some students and schools have doubts about the teaching value of the IES. Some students even claim that they are suffering from the IES. The IES contributes to 20% of the final score of Liberal Studies in HKDSE, which will not affect the final score of the student as a whole subject. The College of Arts & Sciences comprises 21 departments, offering a wide array of majors and interdisciplinary minors in the humanities, social sciences, education, natural science, mathematics, and computer science. The McNulty Scholars Program aims to provide women in STEM fields extensive undergraduate research and mentorship, awarding full and associate level scholarships each year. The Summer Scholars Program awards competitive grants to students every summer to engage in research and creative projects under faculty mentorship. The Professional & Liberal Studies program is Saint Joseph's undergraduate continuing studies division.

In the 1970 general election, Howarth unexpectedly lost his seat by 471 votes. He became a Lecturer in Liberal Studies at Leigh Technical College, and from 1977, Senior Lecturer in General Studies at Wigan College of Technology; he retired in 1987. Howarth remained involved in local politics in Bolton and was elected to Bolton Metropolitan Borough Council; he was Leader of the Labour Group from 1975, and then Leader of Bolton Council from 1980. In the 2004 election he was defeated in Crompton ward.
Cullingham is now producing a film about refugee journalists in Canada. James received his doctorate in Canadian and Latin American History from Toronto’s York University in 2014. He was a coordinator of the Journalism programme and professor of Journalism and English at and Liberal Studies at Seneca@York 2002-2018. He is an Adjunct Graduate Faculty Member in Canadian Studies and Indigenous Studies and the PhD program in Canadian Studies at Trent University. Cullingham is also an Instructor at Trent’s Chanie Wenjack School for Indigenous Studies.
In 1976, an institute restructuring moved the Music Department from the general college to the College of Sciences and Liberal Studies. This eventually allowed band members and members of other music programs to count their participation toward their degrees' humanities requirement rather than just a free elective. In 1977, the Georgia Tech Jazz Ensemble was officially established by several band members with Doug Richards as its director. Following its informal formation in 1974, the Jazz Ensemble faced significant resistance against its formation by the band's student leadership.
The Center for Programs in Education offers teacher preparation at the graduate level, plus a master's in education for experienced educators. The Center for Creative Change features a low-residency, interdisciplinary approach to learning and offers master's degrees in environment and community, management and leadership, organizational development, and whole systems design. The BA in Liberal Studies program attracts students who like an individualized approach to completing their undergraduate degree. Students can receive credit for life experience and may pursue subjects of particular interest to them.
The curriculum so developed was implemented in the school and the experience applied to other schools in Hong Kong. In addition, the curriculum on Integrated Humanities at HKCEE level has been implemented in the school since 2003. Lake was born in Portland, Oregon, the oldest of five daughters, and spent her early years with her family in Seattle and Portland, then lived with an aunt and uncle in Tigard, Oregon, during her teen years. She graduated from Portland's Lewis and Clark College in 1983 with a double major in English and Political Science and moved to the Twin Cities shortly after. For other subjects, through human advisors and online tools Excelsior referred students to regionally-accredited colleges which provided the needed instruction, accessible from the student's location whenever possible. This was done with sufficient rigor that Excelsior had no difficulty in obtaining accreditation. However, Excelsior students did not qualify for Federal Student Aid, which funded instruction, not the advising and evaluation Excelsior provided. He began his publishing career working in pharmaceutical and medical publishing, then worked as a senior book buyer for wholesaler Bookazine, and served in the marketing department of a small Jewish press.
Raymond Yeung, a teacher at Diocesan Girls' School who taught liberal studies had not had his contract renewed by the school after he got shot in the eye during protests last year. He said that his teaching career at the school would end at 31 August. He did not instantly disagree with the results, as he considered his eye injury would lead to his ability to correct assignments to decrease and to diminish his teaching quality which he expected. He agreed that his participation in the social movement would increase awareness by the media.
Georgia Tech's Music Department was established as part of the school's General College in 1963 under the leadership of Ben Logan Sisk. In 1976, the Music Department was assigned to the College of Sciences & Liberal Studies, and in 1991 it was relocated to its current home in the College of Design. In 2009, it was reorganized into the School of Music. The Georgia Tech Glee Club, founded in 1906, is one of the oldest student organizations on campus, and still operates today as part of the School of Music.
In addition, students have the opportunity to study abroad at one of many faculty-led intensive study trips to places like Costa Rica, Thailand, and Greece. Longwood has exchange programs with several foreign universities, including Anhui University of Technology in China, which began in 2004. Building on programs like PRISM, a paid summer research program that pairs students with faculty members for eight weeks of intensive research, Longwood in 2014 launched an initiative to boost undergraduate research efforts. With its historic roots in teacher preparation, liberal studies still remains the largest major on campus.
In 2015, Lam Yat-yan (also known as YY Lam), Beacon's Chinese Language tutor, received an open letter from opponent company Modern Education, inviting him to join the company after his contract with Beacon College ends. Modern stated that they will offer an annual income of HK$85 million, a four-year contract and additional financial assistance. However, Lam rejected the offer, saying that he had "maintained a good partnership with Beacon College". In 2016, Liberal Studies tutor Oscar Ma was reported to have been involved in a sexual relationship with a student.
The Public Safety Leadership Institute on the Atlanta campus offers educational programs for law enforcement and other public safety officials. The curriculum focuses on organizational leadership, liberal studies, and human resources administration within governmental organizations in the rapidly changing post 9/11 world. The institute has been endorsed by numerous law enforcement organizations. The college's graduate-level programs include master's degrees in public safety, organizational leadership, school counseling, and clinical mental health counseling as well as an Educational Specialist degree in school counseling and a Doctor of Philosophy in Counselor Education and Supervision.
After completing her doctorate, Smith taught philosophy for nine years at the University of Notre Dame in the program of Liberal Studies. She went on to teach philosophy for twelve years at the University of Dallas, where she received tenure. After a visiting professorship in life issues at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit and simultaneously a visiting professorship in philosophy at Ave Maria College in Ypsilanti, Michigan, Smith was hired by Sacred Heart Major Seminary in 2001. She held the Father Michael J. McGivney Chair in Life Issues from 2016 to 2019, the year of her retirement.

After defending his doctoral thesis in 1991, Father Holmes was hired at the rank of assistant professor by the Department of Religious Studies. He was the first director of both Liberal Studies and Social & Behavioral Sciences, two programs in the College of Arts & Sciences. Representing the college in the Faculty Senate, he was elected Vice Chair of the Senate Executive Committee. While teaching at Seton Hall, Father Holmes helped inaugurate Clergy Consultation and Treatment Service, an interdisciplinary therapeutic outpatient assessment and treatment program for priests at Saint Vincent's Catholic Medical Center in Westchester County, New York, and served as its first spiritual director.

Jevons was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Washington, Seattle, 1953–1954, then a Fellow of King's College, Cambridge, 1953–1959. He was also University Demonstrator in Biochemistry at Cambridge, 1956–1959, before returning to Manchester University as Lecturer in Biological Chemistry 1959–1966, when he was appointed as the University's Professor of Liberal Studies in Science, holding that chair until 1975. He undertook British Council tours in India, East Africa, and Nigeria, between 1972 and 1975. In 1976, he went to Australia as the first Vice-Chancellor of Deakin University, and on his retirement in 1985 was appointed a Professor Emeritus.
Francisco H. Vázquez (born June 11, 1949 in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico) is a Mexican-American scholar and public intellectual. Vázquez is currently a tenured professor of the history of ideas and director of the Hutchins Institute for Public Policy Studies and Community Action at the nationally known Hutchins School of Liberal Studies at Sonoma State University. He is also the director of the Hutchins Institute for Public Policy Studies and Community Action. He co-authored the prominent book Latino/a Thought: Culture, Politics, and Society, (Rowman & Littlefield) with University of California Irvine professor Rodolfo D. Torres in 2003.

Purdue University Global offers both traditional programs and standardized competency-based learning. This allows Purdue Global to offer college credit to students who can demonstrate they have mastered certain learning outcomes through professional and military training. Members of the US Army, National Guard, Reserves, and veterans can obtain an AAS degree in small group management with six courses, a bachelor's degree in liberal studies with seven additional course and a master's in management with 10 additional courses. Following the acquisition, all Kaplan faculty became Purdue Global faculty which now include approximately 320 full-time faculty and 1,590 part-time faculty.
Bill Brand is a British television drama series produced by Thames Television for the ITV network which was shown in the summer of 1976. Written by Trevor Griffiths, the series charts the political progress of the eponymous Brand, who becomes a Labour Party Member of Parliament for a Lancashire constituency after retaining the seat at a by-election with a small majority. A former Liberal Studies lecturer at a local Technical college, Brand finds the demands of his career at odds with his left-wing convictions. Produced as one series of eleven episodes, Bill Brand stars Jack Shepherd in the title role.
The HKDSE is criticized for placing too much emphasis on the four core subjects, causing some students to neglect the elective subjects. Tsui Lap- chee, then president of the University of Hong Kong at the introduction of HKDSE, commented: "The Education Bureau demands universities [to screen pupils by] setting the so-called 3322 as minimum entry requirement for undergraduate programmes — a minimal of grade 3 in Chinese and English Languages, and a minimal of grade 2 in Mathematics and Liberal Studies. [It is] insufficient for studying in universities." He proposed a minimal grade requirement for two elective subjects, which the Education Bureau rejected.

The North Brisbane College of Advanced Education was an Australian higher education institution (College of Advanced Education) from 1975 to 1982. It was formed on 20 February 1975 combining the existing Kedron Park Teachers College with a new campus at Carseldine. It expanded beyond its original teaching remit to include courses in business studies, community studies and liberal studies. The Sheridan College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning, previously called Sheridan College of Applied Arts and Technology, commonly known as Sheridan College, is a diploma, certificate and degree-granting polytechnic institute in Ontario, with approximately 23,000 full-time students and 17,000 continuing education students. Founded in 1967, the college offers programs in animation and illustration, creative writing and publishing, music theatre, film and design, business, applied computing, engineering technology, community studies, and liberal studies. John Young Cole was born in Ellensburg, Washington, July 30, 1940. He graduated from the University of Washington in Seattle in 1962, going on to earn a Master of Library Science degree from the University of Washington School of Librarianship the following year. He later earned a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies from Johns Hopkins University in 1966 and a Ph.D. from George Washington University in American civilization in 1971. From 1946 to 1966, Cole was chief of the library branch of the U.S. Army Intelligence School, stocking the library's collection on foreign intelligence from books in the Library of Congress surplus books program.

In 1976 Dallow promoted the expansion of Police education programmes in secondary schools. Hitherto such programmes were aimed at acquainting pupils with the role of the Police in society and creating a sense that the Police were trustworthy and approachable. Dallow believed that the Police had to introduce more sophisticated programmes because pupils were acquiring knowledge of law-related issues from "radical and civil liberties types who enter the schools under the guise of 'liberal studies' ".

His most recent book is The Exquisite Triumph of Wormboy” (Word/Galaxy, 2020, a graphic mock-epic poem in collaboration with former Vermont Cartoonist Laureate James Kochalka, and he has a thirteenth collection of poetry, Here now out from Four Way Books, 2019. He has taught for the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies program at Dartmouth College, and at Yale University, Wesleyan University, Vermont College, Middlebury College, Franklin University Switzerland, and the National Hungarian University. He founded New England Review in 1977 and edited it till 1989.

In 1982 Walls returned to California to take a job at Sonoma State University (SSU) as director of sponsored programs and general manager of the SSU Academic Foundation. In 1984 he became the dean of the school of extended education. During his tenure as dean, SSU introduced a BA degree completion program with a distance learning component, MA degrees in liberal studies and computer and engineering science, and an expanded group of MA degrees in psychology, including organizational development and depth psychology. He received an academic appointment in sociology, and taught classes on the civil rights movement, the environmental movement, and gender and social movements.
Huxley was also a major influence in the direction taken by British schools: in November 1870 he was voted onto the London School Board. p. 19–20. In primary schooling, he advocated a wide range of disciplines, similar to what is taught today: reading, writing, arithmetic, art, science, music, etc. In secondary education he recommended two years of basic liberal studies followed by two years of some upper-division work, focusing on a more specific area of study. Her college career highlights included winning the Lady Buckeye Invitational in April 2016, holding the Indiana University record for lowest individual total score in program history, tying the Indiana University record for lowest single round and posting the best single-season scoring average in Indiana history. In Canada the term originated with Ryerson University in Ontario and prior to the late 1990s most of the degrees were B.A.A., as opposed to a B.A. Ryerson changed to the traditional degree naming after the end of the 1990s. At Ryerson programs were considered more professional in nature compared to other universities and offered theory classes alongside with practical applications, or at times combined in one class. There was also an outside program Liberal Studies - Humanities (breath) component for each program of study. Well known programs at Ryerson that used the B.A.A designation included Radio and Television Arts, Media, Journalism, Film and Photography, Theatre, Fashion Design and Merchandising, and Interior Design.
Spies Bornemann Center for Education & Technology The Alumni Hall California Lutheran University's School of Education trains teachers at the elementary, secondary, and post-secondary levels of instruction. It is based in the Spies- Bornemann Center for Education and Technology in the Academic Quarter. While primarily a graduate school, CLU undergraduate students can major in Liberal Studies, which qualifies them to teach elementary school and prepares them for the multiple-subject examinations (the CBEST and CSET) required by the State of California. Since the launch of the HKDSE, the Chinese language paper is often dubbed the "paper of death" (). Some have the opinion that the high expectation is well-founded since it is the main language used in daily life in Hong Kong, but every year nearly half of all candidates fail the subject. They hence lose the chance to gain entrance to a university because of the "3322" requirement, even though tertiary education in Hong Kong is delivered in English. “3322” refers to level 3 for Chinese Language and English Language and level 2 for Mathematics Compulsory Part and Liberal Studies, compared to the past when language subjects were not compulsory at advanced level.

It enjoyed a reputation for being "a populous city, full of most erudite men and rich in the most liberal studies",Cicero Pro Archia, 4 but the only names of distinction in these pursuits during the Seleucid period that have come down to us are Apollophanes, the Stoic, and one Phoebus, a writer on dreams.

In 1988, Crecine proposed a controversial restructuring of the university. The Institute at that point had four colleges: the College of Engineering, the College of Management, the College of Architecture, and the catch-all COSALS, the College of Sciences and Liberal Studies. Crecine proposed the reorganization of the latter two into the College of Computing, the College of Sciences, and the Ivan Allen College of Management, Policy, and International Affairs. A significant feature of the proposed reorganization was, in addition to creating degree programs in international affairs and public policy, was allowing faculty in the social sciences and humanities to develop degree programs in addition to traditional service courses and to add programs in the fine and performing arts to the College of Architecture and Design's programs.

The Center for the Study of the Great Ideas advances the Great Conversation found in the Great Books by providing Adler's guidance, and resource materials through both live and on-line seminars, educational and philosophical consultation, international presence on the Internet, access to the Center's library collection of books, essays, articles, journals and audio/video programs. Center programs are unique in that they do not replicate other existing programs either started or developed by Adler.
After leaving NEC, Greenslit pursued studies in a number of academic fields including philosophy and history of mathematics and science at St. John's College, cognitive science (psycholinguistics) at Johns Hopkins University, and the history and anthropology of science and technology at MIT, where he earned a PhD Greenslit has held postdoctoral scholarships at the Media Lab at MIT and the History of Science Department at Harvard. He was also a visiting scholar in MIT's Initiative on Technology and Self. He has since held faculty positions in the History of Science Department at Harvard University the Liberal Studies Program at the Boston Architectural College, and Liberal Arts at the Boston Conservatory of Music. As Chancellor, Wolfson fostered the growth and development of IU South Bend, overseeing the school’s transition from a two-year college, where graduates were expected to finish their degrees at the Bloomington campus or at Indiana University Indianapolis, to a full-fledged university independently offering Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. When Wolfson arrived in South Bend, the campus had no degree programs, one building, and 21 faculty members—including himself. In Greece private universities are prohibited by the constitution (Article 16). However, laboratories of liberal studies (Εργαστήρια ελευθέρων σπουδών, ergastiria eleftheron spoudon) operate freely in the country, and, based on a law from the 1930s they are registered as private for-profit businesses and regulated by the Greek Ministry of Commerce. Their academic degrees, which are not recognised in Greece, are directly provided to students by foreign universities in the United Kingdom, United States of America, or other countries, usually through franchise or validation agreements (the franchise agreement usually being considered better). This has limited access to the laboratories, which usually teach in English, to high- income Greeks who for various reasons (usually family matters) did not want to go abroad.
Etaugh is professor of psychology, co-director of the Child Study Center, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and interim provost and vice president for academic affairs, all at Bradley University. In 1854, in evidence to a New South Wales Legislative Council select committee on education, Pell advocated the opening of a secular grammar school. In 1859 he testified to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly select committees on the Sydney Grammar School and the University of Sydney, regarding the composition of the University Senate, the adverse effect of clergy on enrolments, the value of liberal studies in the education of businessmen and squatters, and the beneficial effect of the university on secondary education. His evidence resulted in ex-officio membership of the University Senate for professors. He was a member of the Senate from 1861 to 1877 and after resignation was re-elected to the senate in 1878 by members of convocation.
After completing a Rockefeller Travelling Fellowship in the United States, where he visited centres of biological teaching and research, Blake became a lecturer in plant pathology at The University of Sydney and the Wilson Fellow and Senior Tutor at St Andrew's College. In 1971 he was appointed Principal of the new Riverina College of Advanced Education, which he developed into one of the leading providers of distance education courses in Australia, introducing courses in business, liberal studies, and science. After amalgamating with the Wagga Agricultural College, he was able to introduce courses in agriculture and relocated the College to a new greenfield site north of the city. In 1981, he oversaw the amalgamation of the College with the Goulburn College of Advanced Education to become the Riverina-Murray Institute of Higher Education.

While on vacation in New Brunswick in 1965, Nielsen learned that a ratepayers' meeting had voted to expel all 45 Malecite children from a Perth-Andover school--for no more substantial reason than their race. His reports to the Toronto Star led to national publicity and a second, much larger meeting of rate-payers who voted by a big majority to readmit the children. Following a 1988 government initiative designed to increase access to degree programs in British Columbia, five community colleges in BC were granted authority to offer baccalaureate degrees, and these five institutions — Malaspina, Fraser Valley, Kwantlen, Cariboo and Okanagan—were renamed university colleges. Initially, they offered degrees through one of the three provincial universities. Malaspina College had regional campuses in Nanaimo, Duncan, and Powell River by 1990. José Acacio de Barros (born 1967, Barra Mansa, RJ, Brazil) is a Brazilian- American physicist and philosopher with contributions to the foundations of quantum mechanics, quantum cosmology, and quantum cognition. Dr. de Barros received his PhD in Physics from the Centro Brasileiro de Pesquisas Fisicas (CBPF) in 1991 under the supervision of Francisco Antonio Doria and Antonio Fernandes da Fonseca Teixeira (he was also informally under the supervision of Newton da Costa). Since 2007 he has been in the Liberal Studies faculty of San Francisco State University. Before going to San Francisco, he was an Associate Professor of Physics at the Federal University at Juiz de Fora, Brazil, and he was a Visiting Associate Professor at the Center for the Study of Language and Information at Stanford University, and has also held visiting positions at the Centro Brasileiro de Pesquisas Fisicas.

Bliss has been awarded numerous grants including support from the Kindling Fund for her project “Tracking the Border,” two Maine Arts Commission grants , and residencies at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts , Hewnoaks, Shotpouch Creek, Anderson Ranch, and the Vermont Studio Center.
In his inaugural speech, Kunkel spoke of maintaining the core values of the Catholic, liberal arts college: reflection, service to others, and a sense of community. In his nine-year tenure, he oversaw new developments at the college, including the introduction of the Master of Business Administration and Master of Arts in Liberal Studies graduate programs; the launch of the Donald J. In a statement, the Hong Kong Professional Teachers’ Union accused the education bureau of failing to conduct a fair investigation. It said the unilateral disqualification and issuing of warning letters to the school were “despicable acts of intimidation of the school management” and were unacceptable.
