For the second straight Champions League match, Barça lose a key player to injury. Emory scored quickly and then due to "wild and erratic" play, no team scored for a couple minutes until Homewood leveled the score. The teams improved their play and each scored a couple times before Emory took control and went into halftime with a 11–6 lead. Emory continued shooting well in the second half and increased their advantage. Carolina closed the score, but time expired and Emory won 20–17.

Senior Night saw another first meeting with a new conference-mate as West Virginia paid its first visit to Korte Stadium, and SIUE was still missing its two top scorers. The Mountaineers scored first on a penalty shot, when the Cougars were called for a foul in the box in the 25th minute. SIUE turned up the pressure in the second half, outshooting WVU 8–4 (13–9 for the game), and leveled the score in the 57th minute when Johan dePicker buried a crossing pass from Greg Solawa. Despite working and trying hard, the Cougars were unable to take the lead, and the game went into overtime.

The 1st leg was played in St. Jakob Stadium in front of 33,000 spectators and Basel took an early lead through Roland Schönenberger in the third minute. But a double strike from José Eulogio Gárate and Rubén Ayala in the 65th and 68th minute turned the game and Basel were defeated 2–3. In the return leg in Vicente Calderón Stadium, with over 25,000 spectators, Heraldo Bezerra put Atlético in the lead in the 74th minute, Otto Demarmels leveled the score, but this was not enough to stop Atlético advancing to the next round. In the Cup of the Alps Basel were in a goup with Stade de Reims, Olympique Lyonnais and Lausanne-Sport.

After the international break, Bayern faced Eintracht Frankfurt away on 15 October, week 7 of the Bundesliga. The match finished as a 2–2 draw, their third consecutive winless match, but stayed first in the table with a 2-point lead. Robben opened the scoring for Bayern in the 10th minute, before Szabolcs Huszti equalised for Frankfurt right before half-time. Bayern once again went ahead after a goal from Kimmich in the 62nd minute, but Eintracht once again leveled the score, with a goal from Marco Fabián in the 78th minute securing the draw.

Goodwin was a Cronulla junior, playing for the Gymea Gorillas in the local Cronulla-Sutherland District competition. He progressed through the Sharks lower grade teams, the under-20s and reserve grade, before making his first grade debut for the Sharks in round 24 of the 2007 season, miraculously just eight weeks after breaking his leg in reserve grade. He played nine games for Cronulla-Sutherland from 2007 to 2008, scoring two tries. In one of those tries, against the St. George Illawarra Dragons, he chased a Greg Bird grubber kick and kept the ball within millimetres of the dead ball line in the field of play and grounded it for a try which leveled the score and sent the game into golden point.

In the second leg of the series at RFK Memorial Stadium, D.C. defeated the MetroStars 2–0, with late goals scored by Moreno and Bryan Namoff, and advanced to the Conference Final on an aggregate score of 4–0. D.C. United faced the fourth-seeded New England Revolution, who upset the Columbus Crew in the semifinals, in the Conference Final at RFK Memorial Stadium on November 6, 2004.
