Meusel and Bonhoeffer condemned the failure of the Confessing Church — which was organized specifically in resistance to governmental interference in religion — to move beyond its very limited concern for religious civil liberties and to focus instead on helping the suffering Jews. In 1935 Meusel protested to the Confessing Church's timid action: Karl Barth also wrote in 1935: "For the millions that suffer unjustly, the Confessing Church does not yet have a heart".
In her first production, Shannon had a supporting cast that included at least half a dozen players who either had appeared as stars in their own right, or had seen their names in lights as featured players. Shannon was chosen as one of the WAMPAS Baby Stars of 1923, along with Eleanor Boardman, Evelyn Brent, Dorothy Devore, Virginia Browne Faire, Betty Francisco, Pauline Garon, Kathleen Key, Laura La Plante, Margaret Leahy, Helen Lynch, Derelys Perdue, and Jobyna Ralston. At that time they were the two leading women of the Lyricist Lounge movement, which also served as the home base for artists such as Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Pharaohe Monch, Common Sense, Lord Have Mercy, Foxy Brown and Shabaam Sahdeeq. In 2001 she starred in the film Thirteen Ghosts and sung the title track "Mirror Mirror" on the soundtrack. Her second album Everything Is a Story was due to be released on Clive Davis's J Records in 2004, but was shelved. Many songs from the album had leaked to the internet in an unofficial 23-track album of unreleased material, and in 2010 Rah Digga released her own version of the album, featuring additional tracks.
Her lectures of the time showed she had not completely abandoned internationalism, as she argued that rationing foreign edibles which had become staples of the culture would be problematic. She also continued to press for reforms for women's education, believing that even within the cultural context of women's subservience, education was needed to advance societal modernization. In 1939, Inoue, along with other leading women like Kiuchi Kyo and Yoshioka Yayoi, established the women’s wing of the National Language Association, an organization designed to improve and preserve the Japanese language. The goal of the women's wing was to promote the use of feminine language to embody their gender in their courteous demeanor and speech.

In 1973, while working as an independent producer, she received a call from Ronnie Eldridge, who spearheaded special projects for the newly created feminist monthly publication Ms., about an hour-long special the magazine was planning for national television. Shigekawa signed on as producer of what became Woman Alive!,a feminist documentary series made by and for women that showcased the changing role of women in society. The series, which aired on New York's public television channel WNET/13, featured individual women's stories from across the country. Presented in “magazine” format, each half-hour episode included documentaries by female filmmakers, performances by female artists and entertainers, and expert commentary from leading women such as Gloria Steinem and Lily Tomlin.
The modern constraints on the concept of feminine nationalism is the change in national priorities for women in relation to social gender equality in religion, media, and political institutions. While purely Vietnamese nationalism is still prevalent in local events, the impact of capitalist systems is unavoidable in both national image and social institutions. Women are struggling to place themselves in the post- socialist society where being independent and embodying ideals of the war era—rejecting familial piety and choosing to fight for freedom and revolution—is now considered overtly masculine. In this time, the divergence between the national traditions emphasizing sacrifice and a Confucian sense of familial duty are both similar and incongruent, leading women to struggle to articulate themselves in the middle class.
Cambridge University Press. pg. 329-32 While abortion is still viewed as negative in Burma (Myanmar), it is allegedly also employed with some frequency to prevent out-of-wedlock births. Regarding attitudes towards abortion in Thailand, Peter Harvey notes: > ...abortion is discussed not in the language of rights – to life or choice – > but of ‘benefit and harm, with the intent of relieving as much human > suffering in all its states, stages and situations as circumstances allow’, > with an emphasis on reducing the circumstances leading women to feel that > they need to have an abortion. In November 2010, the issue of abortion and Buddhism in Thailand was thrust onto the front pages after 2000 fetuses were discovered stored at a temple in Bangkok.
O’Kane won the 2017 Erna Hamburger Prize. The Prize is awarded by the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne in Switzerland to leading women scientists. Legislation on shared parenting is an attempt at family court reform to make shared parenting more common at the expense of sole custody, so that children of divorced parents can maintain a close daily relationship with both their mother and father. Based on scientific studies showing that children do better with shared versus sole custody, there are many organizations that advocate for shared parenting legislation, such as Americans for Parental Equality, the National Parents Organization, Americans for Equal Shared Parenting the Children's Rights Council, Families Need Fathers, the International Council on Shared Parenting and Leading Women for Shared Parenting.Grangeat M, Kruk E, Bergström M, Marinho S. Cat Pack: Miss Le Bomb, Heidi Mortenson, Monotekktoni ... Wired Stuff (Dorfdisco Berlin) 2006 saw the release of 'The Wired Ones', a compilation CD featuring artists such as Kevin Blechdom, Heidi Mortenson, Dynasty Handbag, Angie Reed and Scream Club. All in all the compilation featured 16 women in electronic music, and was promoted with no announcement of the then unusual line-up. This was a countermove to a certain triple cd compilation coming out that same month, being promoted as the leading women in electronic music, although most of the women were not involved in the music production, which contradicts the making of electronic music. The Wired Ones record release party was held at Lido in Berlin and exceeded to the venues limit with 500 guests.
When Knights Were Bold, Arvidson's first picture at Biograph, was directed by Sidney Olcott and included Griffith in the cast as well, marking the couple's only appearance together on screen. In 1908, Griffith rose to directing The Adventures of Dollie, his first picture for Biograph, in which Arvidson played the leading female character. In her memoir, Arvidson described most of the characters she played in her early film career as "the sympathetic, the wronged wife, the too-trusting maid...waiting for the lover who never came back." At the time, the studio did not want the women in their films to be identified, so the leading women they featured like Arvidson, Mary Pickford, and Florence Lawrence were all known as the Biograph Girls.
Shekhinah Mountainwater (October 24, 1938 - August 11, 2007) was a musician, author, teacher, priestess of Aphrodite, and a key figure in the Goddess movement. She is well known on the west coast of the United States, but has a significant following throughout America and abroad for her music, writing, teaching, Womanrunes, Moonwheels, Goddess ritual, and spiritual and social activism. Mountainwater referred to herself as a "muse-ical mystical magical woman who loves the Goddess and women, a foremother of the Womanspirit movement, a teacher of Women's Mysteries, and a priestess of Aphrodite." She dedicated her life to sharing and expressing the love of the Goddess, leading women to reclaim their power and connection to one another and to the earth.
The idea for OWSD was first raised at a conference on The Role of Women in the Development of Science and Technology in the Third World in 1988, organized by the World Academy of Sciences, where more than 200 leading women scientists from 63 developing countries participated. A study group consisting of top women scientists and experts was formed to explore the possibility of creating an organization that would champion the experience, needs and skills of women scientists in the developing world. At a further meeting in Trieste in 1989, the Third World Organization for Women in Science (TWOWS) was established and a constitution adopted. TWOWS was officially launched four years later in 1993, at the First General Assembly in Cairo, Egypt.
It was the occasion for leading women worldwide to jointly come up with practical recommendations for the way forward to a more equitable and inclusive global society The declaration, written and published in four languages (English, French, Spanish, and Russian), contains the stances adopted by the participants regarding UN resolutions and policies, these stances forming the basis for what is a call to action to governments and international organizations. The Declaration lays out the steps that need to be taken in order to achieve the vision of these international leaders. The Draft Declaration is handed to the President of the State of Israel at the President’s Residence in Jerusalem at the end of the Conference. The 29th International Conference for Women Leaders will take place in October 2015.
A firzogerin reads from the Book of Lamentations (Megillat Eikhah) in the Women's Gallery on Tisha b'Av (from "Remembrance of the Destruction," Leopold Pilichowski, 1925) A firzogerin, (; ), alternately vorsangerin, foreleiner, zugerin, or zugerke, was a historic role in the synagogue for a learned Jewish woman leading women in prayer from the weibershul (women's gallery or annex) as a precentress, parallel to the main service led by a male chazzan. Gender- segregated seating within synagogues was common from the early Middle Ages well into the modern period. The firzogerin stood in the front of the women's gallery, balcony, or annex and translated the Hebrew prayers into the vernacular language for the other women who had come to pray. Sometimes the firzogerin translated more or less exactly; other times she translated freely and added her own interpretation.
This was a brave act of defiance in a prison where the women were closely watched at all times, and it is thought that Hilliard started it, as she kept the souvenir of her fellow prisoners afterwards. Signatories include Eileen Mary Casey, Alice Davies, Edith Downing, Katharine Gatty, Margaret Macfarlane, Helen MacRae, Alice Maud Shipley, Frances Williams and other leading women from WSPU mass window-smashing protests. Hilliard's own embroidered name is in blue thread on the right of the title 'Votes for Women' (which she may have embroidered), and 'Holloway Prison, March, 1912'. Although Hilliard may have intended to donate it to the British College of Nurses, according to the British Journal of Nursing in March 1942, she was said to have kept it until she died in 1950.
Around 50 poems are attributed to her, and are regarded highly in Persian culture. In addition to being well known among Baháʼís, who consider her one of the leading women figures of their religion, Táhirih's influence has extended beyond the Baháʼí community as her life has come to inspire later generations of feminists. Azar Nafisi, a notable Iranian academic and author, has referred to her influence, saying that "the first woman to unveil and to question both political and religious orthodoxy was a woman named Táhirih who lived in [the] early 1800s... And we carry this tradition."Táhirih mentioned on PBS NewsHour – Mention of Táhirih as founder of Persian feminism by renowned scholar Azar Nafizi in a discussion on PBS about Shirin Ebadi, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2003.

Amnesty International (AI) described the crackdown as an "unprecedented level of persecution of human rights defenders in Saudi Arabia"Badawi's brother Raif is in prison in Saudi Arabia. Wilfred Okiche for 360nobs praised the acting of the main cast, with particular acclaim for Richard Mofe Damijo, describing the film as genuinely funny, but downplayed the roles the leading women were made to play in the film as cliche. It noted that "Tobere" has gotten so engrossed to his role in Tinsel (TV series), that it was difficult for him to play a character opposite of what "Ade Williams" represented in the series. It concluded its review by stating that the last 10 minutes of the film were completely unnecessary and a total detach from the remaining parts off the film. Joy Dibia for Xplorenollywood also criticized the unneeded evangelical nature of the latter parts of the film, although she rated it an 8 out of 10 for its genuinely comedic theme and powerful acting.
This theory was predominant among psychiatrists through the 1970s, but has since been discredited.; In a process called benefit finding, the she-ro uses the emotional trauma of being diagnosed with breast cancer and the suffering of extended treatment to transform herself into a stronger, happier and more sensitive person who is grateful for the opportunity to become a better person. In particular, she sees breast cancer as an opportunity to give herself permission for necessary personal growth that she felt she was prohibited from or unable to make before. Breast cancer thereby becomes a rite of passage rather than a disease,; with pink ribbon culture honoring the suffering of its she-roes by selecting them based on the amount of misery they have experienced, and leading women whose treatment is less painful or debilitating to feel excluded and devalued.
About 50 AD, while on his second missionary journey, Paul the Apostle reasoned with the Jews from the Scriptures in this city's chief synagogue on three Sabbaths and sowed the seeds for Thessaloniki's first Christian church. During Paul's time in the city, both Jews and Greeks came to believe the Gospel, as well as some of the city's leading women. However, because the remaining Jews at the synagogue were furious with Paul for what he'd done in their community and were also furious with those who had come to believe Paul's message, the Apostle and his traveling companions, Silas and Timothy, were eventually sent out of Thessaloniki during the night by the new Christian converts. From there the church planters went to Veroia, aka Berea, where the people in that city also heard and believed the Gospel.
After her husband's death in 1799 she continued his business, especially the local newspaper, which had been wholly owned by her husband. In this role she was able to exercise influence out over a wider community than just Haarlem, in the name of her family's company, which she managed on behalf of her sons. She was a benefactor for the Nederlandsche Maatschappij van Kunsten en Wetenschappen, the Haarlemse Teken-Academie, and the actor's club Leerzaam Vermaak where she acted in 1791 with her husband and son in Jan van Walré’s Menschenhaat en berouw (a play after Menschenhass und Reue (Misanthropy and Repentance), by August von Kotzebue). In 1820 she was one of six leading women of Haarlem who set up a fund to help needy pregnant women receive medical help during their confinement called Caring Committee for pregnant women.
Following her postdoctoral work at University of North Carolina, Jacox became a Fellow in Solid State Spectroscopy at the Mellon Institute, where she began working on the spectroscopy of free radicals and other unstable chemical species trapped in chemically inert cryogenic matrices, and area that was to dominate her scientific work for the rest of her life. The first 15 years of this work was done in collaboration with Dolphus E. Milligan, first at the Mellon Institute and, after 1963, at the National Bureau of Standards (later to be renamed National Institute of Standards and Technology). In the late 1950s, Jacox applied for positions at 75 universities, but only all-women's universities were interested. The NBS, however, was open to women (and people of color), leading women like Jacox and Anneke Levelt Sengers to do their research there.
The Rome Cycle is frequently cited as being among the best cycles ever recorded, combining the century's leading Wagnerian conductor with an all-star cast and decent sound. (Furtwängler very pointedly passed over the more-famous Varnay for Mödl as the female lead.) The 1955 cycle's Siegfried has not been released, though Brünnhilde appears only for that opera's final duet. The Walküre from this production, along with Keilberth's Walküre from 1954 (discussed below), represent the two occasions on which Mödl and her great contemporary Astrid Varnay sang the two leading women opposite one another; in this case, Mödl was Brünnhilde. Kundry, however, was to be her defining role, singing it at every Bayreuth production from 1951–59 except for 1958, most famously in 1951, the year the festival re-opened, under Knappertsbusch, and in 1953, under Clemens Krauss.

Her dissatisfaction with the state of women's rights in Persia after the Constitutional Revolution, led her to establish Jam'iyat-e Nesvan-e Vatankhah, "Patriotic Women's League of Iran," in 1922, which uniquely molded together feminism and Iranian nationalism. She was disappointedEncyclopædia Iranica→ESKANDARĪ,MOḤTARAM with the achievements of the Constitutional Revolution for women, so in 1922,Sanasarian, pages 63-64 along with a number of leading women in Tehran, she established the Patriotic Women’s Association. In one of the rallies, they burned leaflets against women, which resulted in Mohtaram’s arrest by the government officials.

She was also recognized as one of Cynopsis’ 2019 Leading Women in Sports.

The massacre precipitated what the Janissaries most hoped to avoid: a general uprising of the Christian Serbs. The Serbs replied by murdering the soubashis"subashas were named in every village, they held the judicial and administrative authority. They were often chosen from the Bosnian mob who joined the dahis, and which thus acquired the right of decreeing life and death over the villagers." and leading women and children away to safe retreats in the mountains and the woods; thus started the beginning of modern history on the Balkan Peninsula. The Revolt of the Serbs Against the Turks (1804-1813), Walter Angus Morison On the eve of the uprising Čolak-Anta Simeonović acquired ammunitions and weapons that he smuggled from Prizren to Belgrade, after learning of his mission a group is sent to intercept him and take possession of the guns, Čolak-Anta and his men refused to hand over the weapons or surrender, they managed to make their way to rebel held Topola where he hands over weapons and ammunitions to Karađorđe, the rebel leader; Čolak-Anta joins Karađorđe's army.

She was a strong supporter of the Communist Party and operated as an underground worker for the Party while living in Shanghai before the communist revolution and establishment of the People's Republic of China on October 1, 1949. Her support and work for the communist cause was rewarded in 1951 when the August First Film Studio appointed her as a film director. Despite having no previous directorial experience, her appointment was widely supported and she became a successful mainstream socialist filmmaker. It was not unusual in the years following the revolution to appoint novice film directors, partly because there were few professional directors working at that time, and partly because the new Communist government significantly financed the film industry. The film industry was seen as an art form that could reach the masses and could be used to effectively spread the party’s political message. Accordingly, Wang’s work fit into the mainstream socialist cinema and had an explicit pro-communist message. Her work was not particularly associated with women’s film. Although some of her films featured leading women, the narrative focused on class struggle and the communist revolution.
Francisca de Montejo y del Castillo married cavalry captain Carlos de Arellano, an uncle of Martín Cortés. Although the union is mentioned in passing by Bishop de Landa (who knew the family personally) in his Relación (ca. 1566), it is Fray Diego López de Cogolludo who relates in his Historia de Yucatán (1688) that Montejo y León died insolvent, bequeathing to his son Juan the encumbrance of paying his significant remaining debts, and causing his widow to petition the King of Spain, with both unusual assertiveness and effectiveness,"I am no less a conquistadora than are the conquistadores...often the leading women of my quality when they are found present in wars and conquests...with their special vision invigorate themselves and work well and serve their monarchs and lords with more energy and valour [than the men]." (As cited in Hugh Thomas's work The Conquest.) for a pension and the right of retaining ownership of the complex of properties (solares) on the plaza mayor of Mérida (part of which, the Casa de Montejo, would continue to be lived in by her descendants into the 19th-century).
In 1823, she was offered the position of head lady-in-waiting to the new crown princess, Josephine of Leuchtenberg, upon her arrival to Sweden, being at that time one of the leading women of court life and high society; she refused and the office was instead given to Elisabet Charlotta Piper, but she did accept to have the position temporary, by meeting Josephine in Germany and escorting her the last part of the journey to Sweden: :"There had been eager hopes that countess Brahe would accept the office as senior lady-in-waiting at the new court, but she could not be enticed to. She did agree to accept the task to depart for Lubeck and receive the crown princess, whose German ladies were both to depart from her there. To the post of senior lady-in-waiting was instead appointed countess Erik Piper, a lady in every aspect worthy of her office, which neither she accepted without difficulty. As she by birth and wealth had came to be in an independent as well as pleasurable position, it may have been a sacrifice which was not entirely compensated by the award the titles and honors could offer vanity."J.
