He appeared in concert, appearing in theaters, at State Fairs and Festivals, and in major hotels in Las Vegas and elsewhere. In the early 1980s, he charted briefly with "Lay Back in the Arms of Someone" on Reward Records and it was during the 80s that his hits in South East Asia had him appear in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, and New Zealand on a regular basis with tours in Japan and Hong Kong.

Critical reception was generally favorable, as the album received a score of 79 from Metacritic. Many appreciated the band's punk and garage rock-influenced revival of the southern rock genre, with NME hailing the album among the "best debuts of the past 10 years." AllMusic claimed the album wasn't "sonically adventurous", but that "in the new-millennium pop realm, some greasy licks sure sound good." James Hunter of The Village Voice called the album "2003's finest rock debut," saying the band had built off of its first EP. Greg Kot, writing in Rolling Stone, declared that the band knew "when to lay back and let things simmer" as well as "when to jump up and testify with tambourines banging" in a favorable review. Rolling Stone critics named it the 10th-best album of 2003 and NME named it the seventh best.

He teamed with songwriter Larry LaFalce for several songs. In 1980 they wrote “Baby, This Time” for Dee Edwards for her album Two Hearts Are Better Than One (Cotillion #SD5223) and in 1981 they wrote Amii Stewart’s song, “Why’d Ya Have To Be So Sexy” (Handshake Records and Tapes #4W9-02438) In 1982, Boone, LaFalce, and Michael Zager wrote “Lay Back in the Groove” for the album Show and Tell by the band Elusion Featuring Limon Wilson (Cotillion #5235). The same year, Boone and LaFalce wrote the song “Everything and More” for the Italian/U.S. ensemble Change. The song was included on the album Sharing Your Love, which reached #66 on the US Billboard Album Chart and #14 on the U.S. Billboard Black Albums chart. In 1983, Boone and LaFalce wrote the songs “This is Your Time” (RFC/Atlantic 89883) and “Magical Night” (Atlantic/RFC Records DMD 631) for the album This is Your Time by Change.

This nimbleness, along with little bits of color like the sly marimba on "Calyphornya", is why No Guts, No Glory can seem simultaneously fresh and familiar." In Relix, Jeff Miller wrote, "No other band in the scene is both as resilient and as divisive, which is why their new album, No Guts, No Glory, while absolutely likeable, isn't quite a revelation: This is the sound of a band getting older, comfortably, in a scene that sometimes would prefer some sort of evolution.... That said, by the end of the album... there's probably a problem if your head's not bobbing, even if it’s in a totally recognizable way." On Live for Live Music, David Melamed said, "All in all, No Guts, No Glory is a fantastic album. The band runs the gamut of their musical styles, mixing longer, complicated compositions with simple, down-to-earth ones.
