In recent times, as far-right racism and sexism have become more mainstream, Australia's larrikins have multiplied, and many at their forefront are women.

Bilby is a 2018 American computer-animated short film written and directed by Liron Topaz, Pierre Perifel and JP Sans in their directorial debuts, and produced by DreamWorks Animation. The film centers around a bilby trying to protect an albatross chick from the dangers of the Australian Outback. A product of DreamWorks' newly-created shorts program, this short was based on the studio's cancelled feature film Larrikins.

Warren John Fahey AM (born 3 January 1946) is a folklore collector, cultural historian, author, actor, broadcaster, record and concert producer, visual artist, songwriter and a performer of Australian traditional and related historical music. He is the founder of Folkways Music (1973), Larrikin Records (1974) and a folk music ensemble, the Larrikins (1975). In 1988 Fahey sold his music publishing company, Larrikin Music, to Music Sales Corporation, and in 1995 sold Larrikin Records to Festival Music. In 2002 he established another record company, Undercover Music Australia.

The concept of Gogglebox Australia is based on the 2013 British reality show Gogglebox, in which people watch and comment on the week's popular television shows and films in their own homes. Producers chose ten households, featuring "a cross-section of modern Australian society, from larrikins to gays, from migrant families to battlers, yuppies and empty- nesters", to discuss the shows. The cast are filmed with remote-controlled cameras, while the crew stay out of their way in other parts of the house. Voiceover artist Jo Van Es narrates the series.

For many years, rumours had circulated about the poor conditions at the Stoke school. In July 1896, St Marys Director, Brother Loetus, wrote to the Nelson Evening Mail in an attempt to placate public disquiet generated by numerous escapes from the "orphanage". Most of the escapees had claimed that hunger had driven them to escape. Perifel's subsequently was appointed Head of Animation on several films including Monkeys of Mumbai and Larrikins that never got to see the light of day for various reasons. In November 2017, it was announced that Perifel has been developing an untitled short film with Liron Topaz and JP Sans. The film was selected through the DreamWorks Shorts program, which was set up by Chris DeFaria, after he became president of the DreamWorks Animation Film Group in January 2017. Bilby opened at the closing ceremony of the Annecy International Animated Film Festival 2018.

The film was set to have an all-star Australian voice cast, headed by Hugh Jackman.

The Kellys were a poor selector family who saw themselves as downtrodden by the Squattocracy and as victims of persecution by the Victoria Police. While a teenager, Kelly was arrested for associating with bushranger Harry Power, and served two prison terms for a variety of offences, the longest stretch being from 1871 to 1874 on a conviction of receiving a stolen horse. He later joined the "Greta mob", a group of bush larrikins known for stock theft. A violent confrontation with a policeman occurred at the Kelly family's home in 1878, and Kelly was indicted for his attempted murder.

By the 1860s, Sydney's business directories listed Chinese premises, especially in The Rocks, with a concentration of Chinese shops, cook-shops and boarding houses on Lower George Street, close to the wharves. The early settlement of the area was described by Lachlan Macquarie in his journals, whose accounts include the description of Elizabeth Macarthur being met in a 'miserable' bark hut, the only accommodation then existing at Camden Park. In 1803, John Macarthur had been granted 5,000 acres (20 km²) at the Cowpastures and began grazing Merino sheep. His sons William and James introduced viticulture and a commercial nursery, and a successful dairy was founded by Emily Stone, James' wife. The region is steeped in history with statesmen, adventurers, larrikins and villains all having an association with the Macarthur region which makes it a tourist destination.

In June 2013, it was announced that Tim Minchin would compose the music and score for Larrikins, which was based on an original concept from screenwriter Harry Cripps. The film followed a desert-dwelling bilby named Perry who leaves his home under a rock to go on a road trip with a music band in Australia. In June 2016, it was announced that Minchin and Chris Miller were to direct the film while Margot Robbie, Hugh Jackman, Naomi Watts, Rose Byrne, Ben Mendelsohn, Jacki Weaver, Josh Lawson, Damon Herriman, and Ewen Leslie were announced to voice characters. While in Europe in 1984, Brock was in the unusual situation (for him) of being the second billing in his driver pairing with Perkins. From 1974 until 1977 Larry Perkins had made 11 starts in F1 and, to the large number of European motoring press covering the two World Endurance Championship races, ex-F1 driver Larry 'Larrikins' Perkins was the star driver with Brock seen as nothing more than a saloon car driver. According to Perkins, "The Porsche exercise at Le Mans was great although PB (Brock) struggled with the 'Euro media' because no one knew who he was!" Following his career in musical comedy, Minchin semi-retired from touring after his 2010/11 international area tour Tim Minchin and the Heritage Orchestra and writing the music and lyrics for the Royal Shakespeare Company's award-winning Matilda the Musical to focus on other projects such as appearing in acting roles as Atticus Fetch in the US series Californication and Judas in the 2012/13 arena tour of Jesus Christ Superstar. At this time, Minchin moved with his family to Los Angeles to write and direct an animated movie for DreamWorks Animation called Larrikins, which was cancelled in March 2017 after four years of work. His second stage musical Groundhog Day had also closed after running for six months on Broadway. After moving to back to Australia, Minchin revealed he was working on an album and visited Australia, New Zealand and the UK for the first time in eight years on the Back: Old Songs, New Songs, Fuck You Songs tour in 2019/20.

By the late 1920s, The West Australian had joined a choir of voices from the public and clergy calling for closure of the Uglieland carnivals at White City: > "... there still flourishes in the city a place which, at best is an > architectural eyesore and a moral disgrace. Caving to mounting public pressure, the Western Australian government ordered the closure of White City in 1929, effectively bringing an end to the Ugly Men's reign over Perth's social scene. After losing their major fundraising activity, the Ugly Men fell into inactivity during the 1930s.
