For forests, canopy refers to the upper layer or habitat zone, formed by mature tree crowns and including other biological organisms (neophytes, lanais, arboreal animals, etc.). The canopy level is the third level of the temperate rainforest. The trees forming the canopy, conifers, can stand as tall as 100 meters or more. A variety of species survive in the canopy.

100px The Kalana Pakui Building was built in 1925 and designed by Maui architect William D'Esmond, incorporating Mediterranean Revival Style architecture. The building is built using reinforced concrete. It is two stories with one floor below grade, with a u-shaped floorplan. Arcaded lanais run across the main body of the building, with steps accentuated by curvilinear concrete railings, and capped by a low- pitched hip roof of Spanish tile.

The upper floors are ringed by lanais, eliminating the need for indoor corridors. The building was constructed in 1942, as part of a massive wartime construction program at Pearl Harbor. The Makalapa area, where it stands, was developed to house many thousands of naval personnel en route to assignments in the Pacific War. The Navy's plans included three non-residential buildings: this headquarters building, and two nearby that housed intelligence and communications facilities.

In Lee County, tropical storm force winds damaged roofs, awnings, and lanais at nine homes; winds also toppled several large trees and branches, and downed power lines across Cape Coral and Fort Myers. A tornado rated F1 on the Fujita scale touched down near Sanibel. It caused extensive damage to two condominium complexes, and 24 nearby homes. Further along its path, the tornado damaged a few other homes and carports, while also toppling or spanning palm trees.

The main architect behind new structure was Charles J. Hardy, an American from Chicago, employed at the Enterprise Planing Mill in Honolulu. The gaslit interior of the mansion was celebrated for its ornate plaster work and frescoes. It followed the Second Empire architecture, or so-called French style of architecture, and was considered a classical Victorian-style mansion. Surrounded by extensive, well-kept gardens, it was characterized by mansard roof, broad lanais, from which lofty flights of steps led down into the gardens, and a large drawing-room upon the ceiling of which was emblazoned the Hawaiian coat of arms.

The hotel became under the management of Four Seasons in 2005. When it was reopened in 2005 under the new brand, the hotel reflected a combination of Polynesian and Hawaiian designs, along with many rooms that had large lanais and views of Hulopoe Beach, which offered snorkeling. In 2012, Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison bought 98% of the island form Castle & Cooke for a reported $300 million, with the remaining %2 owned by the state. After buying the island, Ellison decided to transform the Manele Bay into a luxury resort at a cost of $450 million, it took years of work and a seven-month closure before it was completed on February 2016, with the hotel's lobby being redesigned three times.
