During the Ordovician, the region that is now Eastern Europe was a shallow inland sea. This eyestalk development is believed to be an adaptation to changes in turbidity during this time, with eye-stalked trilobites like A. kowalewski presumably arising in a time of increased turbidity. One thought is that this trilobite may have lain in wait for prey buried in the bottom sediment with only its periscope eyestalks protruding. The major extinction event marking the end of the Ordovician Period reduced the diversity of all trilobite orders with most asaphid families disappearing.

McKinnon pleaded guilty to the charge of conspiracy and was sentenced to five years in prison (he served one). He testified that he was hired by Marshall to kill his wife and that he and the gunman, Larry Thompson, had lain in wait for the Marshalls at the rest stop, where Thompson had committed the murder. Thompson himself was acquitted of murder charges in 1986 due to testimony from family members that he was in Louisiana at the time of the killing. In April 2014, while incarcerated for other crimes, Thompson admitted to having committed the murder of Maria Marshall.

Not much is known about the Stanocephalosaurus diet other than that it was a carnivore like other temnospondyls. Due to evidence suggesting that they were better adapted toward life in water, it can be assumed that their diets have shifted towards eating aquatic organisms as well. Because Stanocephalosaurus had such large flat skulls, characteristic to many large temnospondyls, they most likely lifted their entire skulls in order to open their mouths rather than lowering their jaws. Due to being largely aquatic, Stanocephalosaurs might have lain in wait for prey below the surface of the water, and lifted its massive head to open its mouth wide to suck the food inside, much like modern crocodiles.

In late December 1942, Grimson and Allan Morris walked out of the camp with a group of German servicemen but were recaptured 2 days later, when they showed more courtesy than was expected from a German Officer. The prisoner forgery department had produced the documents necessary for the escape and the German uniforms to go over their civilian clothing. Both Grimson and Morris had again noticed that they had near doubles serving as officers in the German guard company who they impersonated and both had lain in wait for 3 nights fully disguised in their German uniforms waiting for the right moment when the two clones attended the show. Outside the wire they changed into civilian clothes disguised as foreign workers, walking to Sagan station and catching a train to the outskirts of Leipzig before being caught.

Royal grants of protection were offered to the abbey later in the 14th century however, it is also known that the monastery was often the source of problems in the area as the abbot maintained an 'armed band.' A royal commission in 1379 noted that the Abbot of Dieulacres, in order to control the area, had used these armed men, 'to do all the mischief they can to the people in the county of Stafford and that they have lain in wait for them, assaulted, maimed, and killed some, and driven others from place to place...' In 1380 the abbot himself was arrested and imprisoned following an incident during which a John de Wharton was beheaded by these men at the orders of the abbot. Amazingly, he was soon pardoned and released. In subsequent years members of the community were accused of theft and the abbot criticized for appearing to protect them.
