In his Tableau de Paris Louis-Sébastien Mercier describes the characteristics of the manservants (lackeys) of pre- revolutionaryy Paris. "An army of useless servants is kept entirely for show"; he observes that the presence of these servants in the capital has left the countryside rather empty. A tax-farmer's household consists of 24 servants in livery, besides scullions, kitchen maids and six lady's maids. Some lackeys would adopt the manners of their masters and affect a similar mode of dress.

She composed a tanka to console her:Manyoshu, 1:22 The tanka means Fufuki's wish to stand by Tōchi with sorrow as a faithful servant till the end of time. The 1881 census records an equerry and 26 servants living in the main house: an under butler, a housekeeper, four valets, two lady's maids, two dressers, a cook, three kitchen maids, three housemaids, three footmen, a page, a porter, a scullery maid, two other junior posts and a soldier. A coachman and seven grooms lived in the stables. The interrogation of Johann Friedrich Struensee began on 20 February 1772, but concerning the "crime of familiarity" with respect to the Queen, he admitted to nothing for three days. Later, he tried to shift much of the responsibility for the adultery onto Caroline Matilda. Struensee's main political associate and friend, Enevold Brandt, was interrogated at the same time, and reportedly admitted his knowledge of the favourite's crimes. In parallel to this, the Queen's staff were also questioned, and the testimony of her chamber staff, particularly her head chamber woman Charlotta Hedevig Matthie, her lady's maids Kristine Sofie Frederikke Bruun, Anna Charlotte Margrete Horn and Engel Marie Arensbach, and her chamber maid Anna Petersen, were particularly incriminating, as well as that of her lady-in-waiting Elisabeth von Eyben.

Elisabeth Lillström's employment at the theater illustrate the first beginning of the first professional actresses in Sweden. In 1737, the first professional Swedish language theater was inaugurated under royal patronage in the theater building at Bollhuset, which had until then only housed temporary foreign theater companies, which necessitated the creation of the pioneer group of native Swedish actors, composed, according to the British ambassador Edward Finch of "students, clerks and lady's maids." In Sweden, there was never any opposition to women performing onstage, and the first actresses, Beata Sabina Straas, "Miss Wijkman" and "Miss Lund" was engaged for the inauguration performance the same year. Straas, Wijkman and Lund where all retired by 1739, and there was a need to employ more permanent actresses, and in 1741, the theater lists its actresses as Anna Maria Sualing, Anna Lindbohm, Susanna Catharina Steenberg and Elisabeth Lillström.
