Bharani found the plot (as described by Varma) similar to those of K. S. R. Das' films. Varma rejected Bharani's comic version, and asked to rewrite it as a crime drama. Ladies Tailor is a 1986 Indian Telugu-language comedy film, produced by K. Sarada Devi under the Sri Sravanthi Movies banner, presented by Sravanthi Ravi Kishore and written and directed by Vamsy. It stars Rajendra Prasad and Archana in lead roles, with music composed by Ilaiyaraaja. The movie was remade in Marathi as Kuthe Kuthe Shodhu Me Tila (1989), starring Laxmikant Berde and Varsha Usgaonkar and in Hindi in 2006 with the same name as original, starring Rajpal Yadav and Kim Sharma. But both the versions were flops.

Marie Vigoreaux (circa 1639 - 6 May 1679), was a French fortune teller and poisoner. She was one of the key figures in the famous Poison Affair. Vigoreaux was married to a ladies' tailor and had herself been a wet nurse to several members of the aristocracy before she became a successful fortune teller who specialized in palm reading and performed at parties hosted by the nobility. In late 1678, Vigoreaux hosted the party where the lawyer Maitre Perrin heard Marie Bosse say that she was a professional poisoner.

This is a story of a small suburban locality of the Metro City Kolkata named Goragacha. The neighbourhood or in Bengali Para consists of a small grocery shop, run by its owner Shankar, a barber, a tea stall, a ladies tailor, a gents tailor and a local auto rickshaw driver. Amongst locals, there are a political leader or dada, a family whose only young youth was actively engaged in politics and subsequently died in a police encounter, a teacher, a live-in frustrated son-in-law and a Bahurupi. The story started with affectionate bondage between people in that big joint family like para, which slowly faced the fear of being extinct due to their financial stringency.

After hearing the plot, the producers were initially taken aback due to the parallel cinema tone to the subject matter, but finally Edida Nageswara Rao agreed to produce the film. He wanted Akkineni Nageswara Rao to enact the role of Sankara Sastry, K. Viswanath wanted Sivaji Ganesan to perform the role, but couldn't approach him for various reasons and also wanted Krishnam Raju for the role, but later refused as Viswanath felt his image as a star would ruin the role and he finally chosen a debutant J. V. Somayajulu, a stage artist for the role. Vamsy, who went on to direct films like Sitaara, Anveshana and Ladies Tailor was one of the assistant directors in the film.

The plot is based on the Indian folk legend about a female witch who abducts men at night when they are alone and only leaves their clothes behind. The residents of a town named Chanderi believe in the spirit of an angry woman, referred to as "Stree", who stalks men and whisks them away during the four days of a religious festival every year, causing many disappearances. To protect the residents, "O Stree, come tomorrow" is written in Hindi with bat's blood on the entrances of all homes and men are advised to not roam alone after 10 pm during the festive season, and move in groups for safety - a parallel of instructions women are usually told to follow for their own safety. Vicky (Rajkummar Rao), a ladies' tailor in Chanderi, mysteriously encounters a charming woman (Shraddha Kapoor) who only comes to the town during the annual Durga pooja season and falls in love with her at first sight.
