However, Ebert identified serious flaws in the strength of the plot, remarking that, "movies like this are so predictable in their overall stories that they win or lose with their details ...The River Wild was constructed from so many ideas, characters and situations recycled from other movies that all the way down the river I kept thinking: Been there". He emphasized the lack of credibility in the storyline and sheer impossibility of some scenes, particularly involving Strathairn as he outruns the pace of the river, and his scenes with the cliff and his Swiss Army knife.

Following transmission of the story, producer Graham Williams met with Head of Serials Graeme MacDonald, and they agreed that the story had contained too high a level of humour, resulting in a lack of credibility in Stor, and a lack of dramatic tension, and that in future any humour in the programme should counterpoint and strengthen the story rather than undermine and weaken it. Memos to this effect were to be issued to future directors of the show, in order to preserve a level of seriousness that both men felt to be necessary; however, the humorous trend continued until Williams' tenure came to an end in 1979. Paul Cornell, Martin Day, and Keith Topping wrote in The Discontinuity Guide (1995) that the serial "stands up reasonably well", though the Vardans' appearances were "ludicrous". In The Television Companion (1998), David J. Howe and Stephen James Walker wrote that the story was "something of a mess".

In July 2019, in a decision later overturned by the courts, the Bloomsbury Institute became the first institution to be refused permission by the Office for Students (OfS) to be included on the register of providers. The Office for Students claimed Bloomsbury did not meet the requirements for quality (specifically the continuation rate from first to second year and the rate of progression to graduate employment) or for management and governance (specifically the student outcome data and "a lack of credibility in its student and financial forecasts"). Following an initial judicial review, the OfS's decision was ruled lawful in March 2020, but in August 2020 the Court of Appeal overturned the initial decision and ordered the Office for Students to reconsider Bloomsbury's application for registration. In 2019 Bloomsbury Institute partnered with Unlock to join the 'Ban the Box' campaign, becoming the first higher education provider in the UK to no longer ask anyone wishing to study or work at the institute to disclose past criminal convictions.

As of May 2019, none of the money has been returned by the RNC. Steve Wynn has never been convicted of the allegations. Under McDaniel's leadership, the RNC set up a website in April 2018 which attacked and sought to undermine former FBI Director James Comey and called him "Lyin' Comey". McDaniel said Comey was a liar and a leaker, and said that the RNC would "make sure the American people understand why he has no one but himself to blame for his complete lack of credibility". As of 2018, McDaniel spends up to six hours daily calling donors. Under McDaniel's leadership, the RNC had what The Washington Post described as “a huge financial edge heading into the 2018 midterm elections.” As of January 2018, the RNC had almost $40 million banked while the Democratic National Committee had a mere $6.3 million. As of July 17, the Republican National Committee had raised about $213 million for the election cycle with $50.7 million in cash on hand and no debt. The Democratic National Committee raised just $101 million during the same period. In late July 2018, McDaniel falsely claimed that Twitter was shadow banning Republicans, including herself.
