The ship's construction was delayed by multiple changes ordered while she was being built that reflected battle experience with earlier monitors. This included the rebuilding of the turrets and pilot houses to increase their armor thickness from to 10 inches and to replace the bolts that secured their armor plates together with rivets to prevent them from being knocked loose by the shock of impact from shells striking the turret. Other changes included deepening the hull by to increase the ship's buoyancy, moving the position of the turret to balance the ship's trim and replacing all of the ship's deck armor.Roberts, pp. 75–76, 80, 118–19 Completion of the ship was further delayed by the low depth of the Ohio River, which prevented its movement from Cincinnati in December 1864 to finish its fitting out.

On a demo release distributed by Eulogy Recordings, the songs "Set the Stage" and "The Red, Black and Blue" from their album War Is Hell were featured. The vocalist Marshall Lichtenwaldt was featured in the song "Hollow", originally recorded on Parkway Drive's EP Don't Close Your Eyes, and then re-released on their 2010 album Deep Blue. In 2011, Parkway Drive's lead singer Winston McCall was featured in The Warriors' song "Panic", from the album See How You Are. In the second episode of the second season of the Netflix series Marvel's Daredevil, the song "The Price of Punishment" can be heard, it is also featured in the Far Cry 5 and Steep In 2019, hardcore band Knocked Loose released a cover of "Slings And Arrows" from "War Is Hell" on their "Mistakes Like Fractures" EP.

The Acacia Strain's music has been primarily described as deathcore and metalcore, and has been noted to include heavy influences from sludge, doom metal and death metalLets Talk About Knocked Loose Metalsucks along with some punk rock-style aesthetic and sensibilities. AllMusic characterizes the band's musical style as "utiliz[ing] a bone- crushing rhythm section, apocalyptic samples, and a unique triple-guitar assault to deliver their signature blend of hardcore punk, noise, death metal and doom metal." The site's review of Wormwood elaborates on the band's sound as "an inelegant and unstoppable juggernaut fueled by memories of the unchecked aggression unleashed on the world by the likes of Sepultura and Pantera." The band's former bassist, Jack Strong, describes their music as "hardcore-influenced metal", Vocalist Vincent Bennett has described his dislike for the band being labeled "deathcore" and denies that their music is within the genre.

Partly due to developments in digital communications, there has been a rise in interaction between hardcore scenes in different places and subgenres, particularly in Europe. In September 2017, Bandcamp Daily wrote that Fluff Fest, which has been held in Czechia since 2000 and features an international lineup of independent bands ranging in style from crust punk to screamo, "has established itself as the main DIY hardcore punk event in Europe". Code Orange formed in Pittsburgh in 2008, their 2014 sophomore album I Am King reached number 96 on the Billboard 200, and its follow up, 2017's Forever peaked and number 62. Baltimore hardcore band Turnstile, who formed in 2010, signed Roadrunner Records in 2017 and released their sophomore album Time & Space in 2018, which reached number one on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. Kentucky hardcore band Knocked Loose formed in 2013 and released their debut album Laugh Tracks in 2016, which peaked at number 163 on the Billboard 200.

Hermit crabs and live Tegula funebralis snails on a dead gumboot chiton, Cryptochiton stelleri, in a tide pool at low tide in central California Its flesh is edible, and has been used as a food source by Native Americans, as well as by Russian settlers in Southeast Alaska. However, it is not generally considered palatable, with a texture described as extremely tough and rubbery. The writers of Between Pacific Tides further detail the culinary drawbacks of the gumboot: "After one experiment the writers decided to reserve the animals for times of famine; one tough, paper-thin steak was all that could be obtained from a large cryptochiton, and it radiated such a penetrating fishy odor that it was discarded before it reached the frying pan." The gumboot chiton's bony armoring plates, called "butterfly shells" due to their shape, can sometimes be found washed up on beaches, as can whole chitons: the gumboot keeps a weaker grip on the rocks that make up its home than most chitons do, and therefore it is not unusual for them to be knocked loose in heavy waves.

They released their debut EP Space To Breathe on 20 August the same year. In March 2016, they played a number of dates on the east coast of America, including a spot at United Blood Festival. Their debut album Soul Structure was released on 19 May 2017. On 13 August 2017, they opened for Turnstile on their sole UK date of the year, at the Brudenell Social Club in Leeds. In September 2017, they opened for No Warning on the Life or Death Tour, along with Vein, Twitching Tongues and Backtrack. In June 2018, they played Download Festival. In September 2018, they headlined a free show at London's Dr. Martens store, with support by Arms Race and Stages in Faith. In April and May 2019, they toured the U.S. is support of Knocked Loose, the Acacia Strain and Harm's Way. In August 2019, they performed at Reading and Leeds Festivals and Two Thousand Trees Festival. In September 2019, they signed to Roadrunner Records, and announced that their sophomore album 27 Miles Underwater would be released 24 January 2020 and opened for Vein on their North American tour. On 6 September 2019, they released their first single from the album titled Seamless.
