Galiana: It's really about the design and the material and the combination, and just the way that we mold the plastics, the way the curve of the radius of the bottle is, you know, just takes the properties of the plastic and knits it together in such a way that it forms a really, really durable product.
A collegiate array of tartan and bias knits, print blouses and cashmere coats, lingerie tops and buffalo plaid — plus some grungy, and unnecessary, ribbed long-john leggings (in another weird paradox, although seeing fall clothes in September ought to make them feel more relevant, the recent sweltering temperatures make the heavier fabrics look oddly out of place).
Each of the large, spacious rooms was bathed in warm light from candles in the shape of large balls of yarn, with dozens of statement sofas dotted around and surrounded by expansive bouquets of flowers in signature Missoni hues — magenta pinks and burned oranges — not to mention a small army of actual Missonis, all wearing the brand's signature knits.
So it was a relief to see Giambattista Valli at least return to the familiar landscape of sepia-toned Paris, as first addressed in his couture show in January, and now translated into black and white and florals and tweeds; embroidered, overlaid, pleated, asymetrically shirred, long and short, but best when paired with ribbed gray Shetland knits.
And not everyone is comfortable with the idea: At Akris, Albert Kriemler's liquid C-suite leathers, knits and silks in jade and lapis lazuli remained quiet in their confidence; at Sacai, Chitose Abe stuck to her usual cut-and-paste of forms and fabrics (school blazers, down jackets, tennis sweaters, chiffon), with her usual, if occasionally overcomplicated, aplomb.
Arthur Arbesser, for one, part of the fresh crop of names in the city, started with Wim Wenders's 1987 film "Wings of Desire," set in the Berlin circus scene, and then embraced — well, not gold, but bronze, in the form of gleaming vinyl, as well as a kaleidoscopic techno/geometric mix in knits and cotton shirting, vinyl and latex.
But it's a point that was underscored in a subtler way at Jil Sander, where Luke and Lucie Meier gracefully balanced pristine monochromatic tailoring and a curvaceous classicism in a silent pantomime of communion between opposites: graceful white and black dresses (pin-tucked, puffed out) and soft power jackets; swaddling dawn-sky knits and yards of swaying silken fringe.
There's something entirely personal about its weird juxtapositions and connections, even as the results have become more sophisticated: high-waist acid-washed denim jeans with pockets placed back to front; irregular patchwork knits and slithery magenta nylon; cropped triangular jackets over shrunken pleated miniskirts; and juicy orange and blue sheaths with space age-y oval cutouts at the clavicle.
In May of last year, Hearst presented a small pre-fall men's collection of chunky speckled wool sweaters and slate gray tailoring, and in July, she followed with a 23-style resort offering of lightweight powder-blue and putty-colored suiting, as well as crew-neck knits in off-kilter pastel shades like faded butter yellow or dusty lilac.
And though he managed to let the stuffing out in slouchy wide wale corduroys that hung off the hips and puddled on the floor paired with cropped knits and tweedy blazers, in tailored 1970s greatcoats and patched upcycled leather, there was still too much residue of the old bourgeois loafer set to really signal a new dawn.
I spy with my little eye … an extravagant bishop's sleeve on a slithery black wrap dress; structured panniers atop a sheer lace frock; peaks and valleys of silk and summer lawn in elaborate christening layers; antique tablecloth linen shirtdresses and baby doll macs; ribbed knits, the necks rimmed in marabou, and simple black jackets, the seams dangling diamanté strings.
Roomy men's wear tailoring in houndstooth and tweed, either big or cropped into a bolero shrug atop a sweater featuring a rearing white horse (a Stubbs-inspired print that also appeared on dresses and pants) was claimed via seamed-in breasts and bullet bras worn under knits, transforming lingerie into a warning: Mess with me if you dare.
Bright pink mandala-print scarves were swathed sari-style around ivory knits and fuchsia silk skirts; a grape puffer came topped with a sapphire fox collar; a sky-blue mandala sweater topped a blue sequined skirt with beaded fringe; and a cherry-red cashmere cable-knit dress was finished in a burst of degradé ostrich feathers.
In the book, Joyner shares the story of a pink hat that was knitted by a woman and used by the members of a small community (the woman knits it and uses it to warm her feet, a kitten plays with it, and a mother uses it as a blanket for her baby), until it gets stolen by a dog.
Mr. Anderson will probably never give up his allegiance to the odd, but here was terrific proof that he doesn't have to: drop-waist dresses toggling between pleat and plain, mac skirts and great knits, and swoopy leather trousers that buckled at the ankle (nominally for men, although Mr. Anderson noted that women have been buying his men's collection, too).
Coats were sculpted just so with two pristine folds at the scapulars to create a hint of a cocoon at the back; princess collars raised just enough to transform the neck into an object of veneration; knits and dresses and boots and leggings an explosion of color embedded in the fabric itself and entirely controlled by the purity of the line.
In Europe the travel aggregator tool that's been known since launch as GoEuro — and soon, within a matter of weeks, Omio, everywhere it operates — has some 27 million monthly users tapping into the convenience of a platform that knits together train travel, bus trips, flights and most recently ferries to offer the most comprehensive coverage available of longer distance travel options in the region.
Paisley and flower power silk scarves sourced from flea markets were remade as bias-cut silk dresses and shorts with flowing pareo "skirts" at the back; sunset shade T-shirts had a shadow print of arms raised in a triangular feminist symbol; tapestry knits became coats; flared silk trousers were finished in silk fringe at the ankles; and pleated Grecian dresses were caught by leather harnesses.
But when it works — as it did at Valentino wonderfully well, and as it did at Stella McCartney, where the suit linings became the stuff of slip dresses false-fronted onto velvet and knits, and portraits of women by the British artist J.H. Lynch were revealed under sheer lace and tulle shirts, the normally unseen elevated and exposed to the light — it raises the bar for everyone.
The collection itself was something of a long-haul journey, with more than 200 looks, including urban daywear (diaphanous parkas, slouchy slacks, relaxed knits), elegant suiting, eye-popping nightclub neons (chartreuse yellow or hot pink biker jackets, miniskirts and hot pants, and sequins by the truckload), and a finale of Emporio-branded bustier dresses, sheer blazers and blouses, scattered with the letters and finished with tassels.
Over the course of two and a half days, I encountered the highest density of traditional crafts from around the world in any one place: Azerbaijani jewels, Laotian silks, Mexican vicuña ponchos, Malian indigo dresses, Rwandan coiled baskets, Ukranian peasant shirts, Hungarian hand-loomed tablecloths, Syrian blown glass, Czech pottery, Uruguayan knits, Palestinian embroidery, Moroccan boucherouite rugs and Nigerian silver and leather work — it goes on and on.
"It's a party theme," she explains on repeat in French, English and Italian, as she points out the jacquard sweaters with a vintage pattern of masks, the chiffon-weight knits, the embroidered woven lace of daisies made with the Swiss technique known as Sangallo — the many patterns and weaving methods pulled from the archives, and the new silhouettes and knit weights that push the fashion house's language forward.
The only name that even tried to compete with Chanel in the smartphone stakes (if not the style substance ones) was Rihanna, who transformed the classical 17th century reading room of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France into a School of Rock for her third Fenty x Puma collection with a parade of jocks, goths, skate kids and bad girls in tartan hoodies, shrunken cheerleader uniforms and varsity knits.
And at Loewe, Jonathan Anderson offered an elegantly pointed meditation on the selfie and 16th- and 17th-century cameos (the connection between the two), juxtaposing the now-and-then by setting the cool of a black riding coat against the frippery of handkerchief-hem skirts trimmed in Elizabethan lace; needle punching ribbed cream knits into organdy petticoats; and flopping a cravat and balloon sleeves out from under a basic black knit tank.
So one day in early March, during the last leg of the women's wear collection, in a gap between Alexander McQueen (where Sarah Burton offered up artisanal knits and gossamer dresses inspired by the Shetland Isles), and Chanel (where Karl Lagerfeld built a rocket ship in the Grand Palais around which models strode in space age bouclé), , I found myself in a back alley by an unmarked door behind the former La Samaritaine department store.
At Off-White, it meant Hadids of all ages (Bella and Gigi and mother Yolanda) plus other famous models (Karlie Kloss and Alek Wek and Carolyn Murphy) in a bit of this, a bit of that: slick sapphire-and-white cow-print pencil skirts and trench coats; hallucinogenic houndstooth-check suiting; mint green leather jumpsuits and amethyst knits; billowing tulle ball gowns spliced on top with Arc'teryx technical jackets, the taffeta of the outdoor rec world.
Meanwhile, at Monse, Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim, who were recently named creative directors of Oscar de la Renta, offered a mix of torqued men's wear — pinstripes and crisp white shirts de-and-reconstructed into cold shoulder tops (shoulders are shaping up to be something of an erogenous zone) and wide, cropped trousers — before segueing into scarf and awning stripes and some white knits with sequins and paillettes creeping up from the hem like a fungus, or melting down a gown from a transparent chiffon shoulder.
Christopher Kane, for example, titled his 10th anniversary collection "Make Do and Mend" after the rallying cry of 1940s wartime rationing, and the imperative to create something new out of whatever was at hand: "road kill" fur pencil skirts with stretch tulle T-shirts boned like corsets; squiggle yarn dresses and prints crafted from his own runway archive; knits and chain mail strewn with sparkling geodes, and frilled stretch lace dresses and Lurex pleats spliced with sheer panels, dug up from his own past.
The new Hesperios brick-and-mortar store is part retail space that sells said knits and literary journal along with gas oil lamps ($55), tiny asymmetrical ceramics, resin-dipped oyster shells ($13), a leather dog collar ($35) and vintage poetry books ("Sonnets to Orpheus" by Rainer Maria Rilke, "Words for the Wind" by Theodore Roethke, "The Dream of a Common Language" by Adrienne Rich); and part cafe with a tea list by House of Waris and bread from Meyers Bageri, the bakery in Grand Central Terminal.
Last November, I spotted a Fendi Peekaboo bag, a Saint Laurent Sac de Jour bag, a Balmain biker leather jacket and Men's Louis Vuitton Icare briefcase Off the main artery, Rue de Passy, on a cobblestone pedestrian market street, you'll find Coeur de Luxe, a small shop tricked out like the ultimate French walk-in closet: tuxedo jackets, Céline blouses, Breton striped knits and Chanel tweeds alongside Jean-Claude Jitrois leather, sheared furs by Sylvie Schimmel and no shortage of gold-buckled belts, bags and shoes.
And those Europeans folks now include some rather high profile investors in London-based urban transport startup Citymapper — who have just poured $40 million into a new Series B round for its app which algorithmically knits together different transit options to help city dwellers quickly figure out how to get from A to B. Announcing the Series B in a Medium post Citymapper lauds the "great terms" it secured for the round with a jokey aside that its investors have promised "to only take buses from now on".
