The netlabel Trekkie Trax originated as a party titled "Under 20" that took place in the Akihabara area of Tokyo. It soon transformed into an online label that issued dance music touching on genres such as juke house, 2-step, brostep, and grime-influenced dub music. In 2014, the label gained international attraction through appearances on the Tokyo radio station block.fm. On April 11, 2014, the Finland label released Trekkie Trax Japan Vol.

The overall project of Genre-Specific Xperience intends to sonically and visually reinterpret five genres: juke house ("Corpcore"), hip hop ("Hip Hop Spa"), dubstep ("How Can I Resist U"), electronic tropicalia (“D-Medley”), and what the press release labeled as "‘90s Gregorian trance" (“Vatican Vibes”). The 2000s saw a rise in Chicago juke or juke house, a faster variant of ghetto house which began forming in the late 1980s. Chicago juke songs are generally around 150–165 BPM with beat- skipping kick drums, pounding rapidly (and at times very sparsely) in syncopation with crackling snares, claps, and other sounds reminiscent of old drum machines. The production style is often markedly lo-fi, much like baile funk. Chicago Juke evolved to match the energy of footwork, a dance style born in the disparate ghettos, house parties and underground dance competitions of Chicago.

Teklife is a footwork collective. In December 2005, DJ Gant-Man became the first DJ/producer to have a Chicago Juke house remix for a major artist on a major label with his remix for Beyonce's "Check on It" featuring Slim Thug on Columbia/Sony Records and Gant-Man also helped develop Chicago juke sound. Missy Elliott was the first artist to showcase Chicago dance and music scene on BET's 106 & Park in 2005 with her song "Lose Control". She hired a female dancer choreographer from Chicago to do the choreography for the "Lose Control" music video.

Located just east of Downtown Kansas City, the neighborhood is the metropolitan area's historic center of African American culture. In 1991, the national historic district encompassing 35 contributing buildings was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In the 1990s, parts of the film Kansas City were filmed there, and façades left from the movie remained on most of the dilapidated buildings until the end of the decade. Today, the 18th and Vine district includes the Mutual Musicians Foundation, the Gem Theater, the long-time offices of African-American newspaper The Call, the Blue Room jazz club, the American Jazz Museum, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, Smaxx Restaurant, a restaurant inside the Juke House and Blues Club, and several apartments and condos. The Historic Lincoln Building serves as a hub of professional and business activity in the Black community, restored in the early 1980s by the Black Economic Union of Kansas City.
