After 22 hours of bidding on 163 lots, the auction of the late decorator Mario Buatta's belongings — a giddy assortment of dog paintings, porcelain fruits and vegetables, needlepoint pillows, gilded door knockers, Chinese jardinieres and a thousand other pieces delivered in 19 trucks — fetched $7.6 million, more than two and a half times its estimate.

A multitude of varied objects were created. Table tops were particularly prized, and these tend to be the largest specimens. Smaller items in the form of medallions, cameos, wall plaques, panels inserted into doors or onto cabinets, bowls, jardinieres, garden ornaments, fountains, benches, etc. are all found.

Beginning in 1872, Vodrey operated Vodrey Pottery in Dublin and sold his ware at a nearby storefront. The pottery's output was art ware: ewers, vases, jardinieres, and so on. Despite having been reared around the rich English pottery tradition of the Staffordshire area, Vodrey had no particular training as a potter. Instead, he was an astute businessman who was skilled at cultivating talented artists and designers.

The Andersons purchased 40 bonsai from the Yokohama Nursery Company. The company's catalogs from 1901 to 1922 are impressive documents, beautifully illustrated with colored plates, line drawings, and photographs. In a section titled "Dwarf Trees Growing in Jardinieres" the catalogs show pictures of ancient specimens of Hinoki Cypress similar to those that are now part of the collection. They are captioned "Relics of the Tokugawa Era".

Vases and gardenware (flower pots, bowls, jardinieres) were also very popular during the period. While their primary distribution was on the Pacific coast, Garden City wares were distributed nationally through retailers like Macy's and Montgomery Ward. Since Garden City was primarily a wholesaler, wares were sold under store brand names and are not marked. Additionally, no company product catalogs are known to exist and no official product names are known.

Stone gardens existed in Japan at least since the Heian period (794–1185). These early gardens were described in the first manual of Japanese gardens, Sakuteiki ("Records of Garden Keeping"), written at the end of the 11th century by Tachibana no Toshitsuna (1028–1094). The brick edging was originally tiles, fragments of which remain beneath the ground. To the north of the house another open rectangular lawn, originally described as being for croquet and bowls, has two very large elaborate cast and wrought iron flower jardinieres along the path on the eastern end. After the First World War a tennis court was constructed on the northern lawn, but has since been removed to reinstate the original lawn. To the south and west (rear) of the house although there are some mature trees there is modest landscaping.
