Ian Beer is a British computer security expert and white hat hacker, currently residing in Switzerland and working for Google as part of its Project Zero. There are those who consider him as one of the best iOS hackers. Beer was the first security expert to publish his findings under the "Project Zero" name in the spring of 2014; at this time, the project was not yet revealed and crediting the newly discovered vulnerabilities to it led to some speculation. He is known for discovering a large number of security vulnerabilities in Apple products, including iOS, Safari and macOS, as well as helping create jailbreaks for iOS versions.

For this reason, console manufacturers aggressively protect their profit margin against piracy by pursuing legal action against carriers of modchips and jailbreaks. Particularly in the sixth generation era and beyond, Sony and Microsoft, with their PlayStation 2 and Xbox, had high manufacturing costs so they sold their consoles at a loss and aimed to make a profit from game sales.

While leading an army of prison escapees from Gartmoor prison whom he had incited to riot by dropping leaflets about the ISW from a plane, he attacked an airport where Federal planes were about to land, and captured Hawkman, before Green Lantern impersonated the Thinker during the 'trial' of the JSA and freed the JSA, who jailed the villains.

On October 12, 2010, Chronic Dev Team released Greenpois0n, a desktop-based tool for jailbreaking iOS 4.1 on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch third and fourth generation, and iPad 1. During its development, Apple released the second generation Apple TV, and Greenpois0n's developers reported that it could jailbreak the Apple TV as well. The developers announced plans to release it on October 10, but after news spread of another jailbreak developer, George Hotz, preparing to release a jailbreaking tool called limera1n that would perform a similar function with a different exploit, the Greenpois0n developers delayed in order to integrate the limera1n exploit, which supported more devices. Using limera1n also meant that the original Greenpois0n exploit (SHAtter) could be saved for use in later jailbreaks.

Later that day, Fathimath Nisreen, the secretary of online Sandhaan publishers Ahmed Didi and Mohamed Zaki, were arrested by the National Security Service (NSS) during a crackdown on pro-democracy reformists and taken to Maafushi. Didi was taken to Girifushi due to health problems, but Zaki was incarcerated at Maafushi on 16 August. In 2009 a number of riots and jailbreaks broke out, and on January 10 detainees went on a hunger strike in protest at the government's failure to improve the poor conditions of overcrowding and inadequate lighting. Prisoners set the prison on fire in April, affecting the health centre, a workshop and a desalination plant, and on April 5 a raid on the prison found homemade bombs, knives, Islamic extremist literature and more.

The iPhone Dev Team, which is not affiliated with Apple, has released a series of free desktop-based jailbreaking tools. In July 2008 it released a version of PwnageTool to jailbreak the then new iPhone 3G on iPhone OS 2.0 as well as the iPod touch, newly including Cydia as the primary third-party installer for jailbroken software. PwnageTool continues to be updated for untethered jailbreaks of newer iOS versions. In November 2008 the iPhone Dev Team released QuickPwn to jailbreak iPhone OS 2.2 on iPhone and iPod touch, with options to enable past functionality that Apple had disabled on certain devices. After Apple released iOS 3.0 in June 2009, the Dev Team published redsn0w as a simple jailbreaking tool for Mac and Windows, and also updated PwnageTool primarily intended for expert users making custom firmware, and only for Mac.

In 2015, Zerodium was the first company to release a full pricing chart for zero-days ranging from $5,000 to $1,500,000 per exploit. The company was reportedly spending in 2015 between $400,000 to $600,000 per month for vulnerability acquisitions. In 2016, the company has increased its permanent bug bounty for iOS exploits to $1,500,000. In 2017, Zerodium has published a new pricing chart exclusively for mobile zero-days ranging from $10,000 to $500,000 per exploit. The company has also announced a time limited bounty of $1,000,000 for Tor browser exploits. In 2018, the company has added new products to its bounty program including cPanel, Webmin, Plesk, DirectAdmin, ISPConfig, OpenBSD, FreeBSD, and NetBSD. It has also increased its payouts for various software including a bounty of up to $500,000 for Windows remote code execution exploits. In January 2019, Zerodium has once again increased its bounties for almost every product including a payout of $2,000,000 for remote iOS jailbreaks, $1,000,000 for WhatsApp, iMessage, SMS, and MMS RCEs, and $500,000 for Chrome exploits.
