At the Groom Expo there are poodles everywhere: poodles dyed a kaleidoscope of colors, poodles with tribal designs shaved into their fur, a poodle that is shaved and dyed to look like a reindeer with a fawn carved into its side, a poodle whose hair is dyed in the shape of Tweety of "Looney Tunes," a "Seasons Greetings" poodle dyed to look like a jack-o'-lantern on one leg and Santa on another.

There's this ET jack-o-lantern, complete with bicycle, Reese's Pieces, and multiple Elliotts: This Dia de los Muertos ofrenda commemorated JPL space missions past: There was this guitar-strumming, pumpkin-headed skeleton: And a 3D model of a jack-o-lantern, for which no live pumpkins were harmed: Engineers constructed plenty of interactive, nerdy-ass displays like this one, where a participant had to push a lever to try to meet the exact shock specifications of the pumpkin: Or this one, where you had to guess the mass of the pumpkin using science and math (the equations on the pumpkins, I imagine, are there to help): A planetary sample acquisition submarine pumpkin was placed on Europa (one of Jupiter's moons) where it drilled into the team's winning pumpkin design from last year: Another Europa pumpkin was equipped with a counter adding up signs of life: But my personal favorite had to be the jousting battlebot pumpkins, because who doesn't love a good battlebot: Happy Halloween, from one group of nerds to another!

There's a rogue's gallery of photo ops documenting the unknowing yet nevertheless potential assassins — men who either have been infected or simply exposed to the coronavirus — who've slipped by in plain sight of the Secret Service and matter-of-factly gotten this close to the president: The Brazilian presidential press secretary standing shoulder-to-shoulder with a jack-o-lantern-grinning Trump holding a mud-brown "Make Brazil Great Again" cap as they celebrate the brand's international launch; the Brazilian charge d'affaires who shared a festive dinner table with the president in the rococo splendor of Mar-a-Lago, statesmen fiddling away the evening while the virus burned its path across their nations.
