"When She Cries," "Mending Fences," "We Got the Love" and the title track were released as singles. Dittrich, Gregg, and Innis alternated as lead vocalists on the band's fifth studio release, 1992's Big Iron Horses. This album produced the band's biggest crossover hit in "When She Cries", which went to number 9 on the country charts, number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 (their highest entry on that chart), and number two on the Adult Contemporary charts. After it came "We Got the Love" (guest musician on banjo was original Eagles member Bernie Leadon) and "Mending Fences", which both fell short of the country top 10 and its title track, "Big Iron Horses", was far less successful, peaking at number 72. Keyboardist Dave Innis also left the band in 1993, reducing the band to a trio.

Blount was killed when his private airplane hit a tree during an emergency landing in Marlborough, New Hampshire, on August 31, 1967.

The magazine suspended publication soon after, amidst the collapse of its debt-ridden parent company. It was eventually acquired by one of the Traubs' daughters, and relaunched in late 2005. Snow and Fritz were brought back in May 2006 in an attempt to lure readers, but this second stint was shorter-lived, and editor-at-large Todd Ingram carried the publication for the remainder of its run. Iron Horses final issue was published in November 2011.

Stewart left for a solo career before Big Iron Horses, which resulted in Dittrich, Innis, and Gregg alternating as lead vocalists; Innis also departed before Matters of the Heart, and the band ultimately went on hiatus from 1994 to 1998. During this time, Jennings became a member of Vince Gill's road band, and Dittrich recorded one album in The Buffalo Club. Outside a brief reunion for new tracks on a Greatest Hits album in 1998, the band remained inactive until 2002, when Dittrich, Gregg, Innis, Jennings, and Stewart resumed touring. Two years later, they issued Still Restless on Audium Entertainment.

Iron Horses maiden issue was dated January 1979. The magazine was co-published by Paisano and Dell until the mid-1980s when it was sold to the Traub family, the owners of a New York area printing plant and publishers of many special interest titles, ranging from romance novels to men's magazines. Iron Horse enjoyed its creative heyday during the early 1990s under editor-in- chief Dave Snow and Assistant editor Fritz Schenck, but that did not prevent its sale — along with several other Traub properties — to Princeton Publishing, the New York subsidiary of a fast expanding Florida-based startup, in 1996. Snow and Fritz departed in April 1997.

Restless Heart is an American country music band established in 1984. The band's longest-lasting lineup has consisted of Larry Stewart (lead vocals), John Dittrich (drums, vocals), Paul Gregg (bass guitar, vocals), Dave Innis (piano, keyboards, guitar, vocals), and Greg Jennings (lead guitar, mandolin, vocals). Record producer Tim DuBois assembled the band to record demos and chose Verlon Thompson as the original lead singer, but he was replaced by Stewart in this role before the band had recorded any material. Between 1984 and 1998, Restless Heart recorded for RCA Records Nashville, releasing the albums Restless Heart, Wheels, Big Dreams in a Small Town, Fast Movin' Train, Big Iron Horses, and Matters of the Heart.

The railroad was a prominent factor in the development of Ocilla and Irwin County in the late 19th and early 20th century, with multiple railroads bearing the name of the town. A March 20, 1981 Fitzgerald Herald-Leader article said that at one time, fourteen passenger trains stopped in Ocilla each day. According to Frank Crouch, "The Seaboard passenger trains stopped two times a day," and there was also a railroad shop where trains would have gone for repair. While no tracks currently connect any industry or passenger service to Ocilla, the remnants of the "Iron Horses" that once whizzed through the area are still visible from track embankments in Irwinville, Georgia to the historical red caboose prominently overlooking Cumbee Park.
