The title is a reference to the ethnically-mixed middle class Los Angeles neighborhood of Lake View Terrace. The film was released on 19 September 2008, received mixed reviews and grossed $44 million.

The junior class president, ReVonda Bowen, who has a black mother and a white father, reportedly asked Humphries what his order would require her to do. Humphries replied that ReVonda's parents had "made a mistake" by conceiving her. Humphries had long opposed interracial dating, as had some of his teachers; Humphries reportedly threatened to tell students' parents that they were dating interracially, as well as telling white girls that "no white boy would have them" after they had been with a black boy. Following the incident, parents across the district organized demonstrations and boycotted classes.

Catholics were twice as likely to be in an interracial marriage than the general population. It is speculated that the reason for this is twofold: the increasing diversity of the Catholic population (which has seen a huge influx of immigrants, Catholicism has sizable to significant number of adherents from many nationalities worldwide) and the fact that Catholics typically base their choice of parish on geography rather than on its ethnic or racial makeup which creates more opportunities for interracial mixing. Jews were also more likely to date interracially than Protestants. Some religions actively teach against interracial marriages.

Region also moderates the relationship between religion and interracial dating. Children with a religious upbringing in non-Western states, particularly the South, were less likely to have interracially dated than those without religious upbringings. Invalidated interracial marriages if the parties went to another legal power where such marriages were legal. Marriages between African Americans and Native Americans were also prohibited. 1933: Public Accommodations Establishment of segregated libraries for different races was authorized. 1934: Education All schools were required to be racially segregated. 1942: Health Care There were to be separate but equal accommodations for whites and African Americans provided in nursing homes. 1944: Miscegenation Any marriage between a white person and an African American or racially mixed citizen was prohibited. Penalty to follow this law was a fine of $500 to $5,000. If the people continued to be interracially married the result would be imprisonment in prison from three to twelve months. 1944: Railroads Separate coaches for white and African American passengers were required. 1948: Barred School Segregation This law did not allow African American physicians and nurses to take postgraduate courses in public hospitals and Louisville. 1950: Barred School Segregation African Americans were allowed to attend colleges and universities under two conditions. These conditions are that if comparable courses were not available at Kentucky's African American College in Frankfort, KY and the school's governing body had to approve of this act. 1951: Miscegenation Any intimate relation between whites and African Americans was illegal.
