Volatility in oil prices and the U.S. dollar may be weighing on markets, but people are returning to the workforce, sending employment on a steady upswing and prompting welcomed inflationary pressure — and that's the Fed's main concern.
This long run of growth should encourage the Bank of Japan to stick with the current monetary easing framework, given its argument that inflationary pressure will percolate through the economy as long as growth is on track.
"For the coming year there's a need to keep monetary policy accommodative as economic growth will likely hover below the potential growth rate, while the demand-side inflationary pressure will stay weak," Lee said in a statement.
This expansionary fiscal policy stance will almost certainly force the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates further to contain inflationary pressure, which is all too likely to lead to a further strengthening in an already strong dollar.
"There's enough strength in the labor market to allow them to think about raising rates still, but there's not enough inflationary pressure to require them to do so," said Scott Clemons, chief investment strategist at Brown Brothers Harriman.
