From its mistakes and the Australians' discoveries, U.S. command realized that it needed a new way to approach the dilemma of the tunnels. A general order was issued by General Williamson, the Allied Forces Commander in South Vietnam, to all Allied forces that tunnels had to be properly searched whenever they were discovered. It began training an elite group of volunteers in the art of tunnel warfare, armed only with a handgun, a knife, a flashlight, and a piece of string. The specialists, commonly known as "tunnel rats", would enter a tunnel by themselves and travel inch-by-inch cautiously looking ahead for booby traps or cornered PLAF.

Inspiration for the plot of "Terror in New York City" was provided by Gerry Anderson, who had read a newspaper article concerning the physical relocation of a Japanese department store as part of a highway redevelopment scheme: "Because of its huge value as a going concern, it was not demolished but jacked up and moved inch by inch to a new site." Alan Fennell's original script was submitted before Lew Grade, the Andersons' financial backer at ITC, ordered that the length of all Thunderbirds episodes be doubled from 25 to 50 minutes.

Christ Pantocrator- Almighty, Macedonian: Христос Седржител Fresco under the church dome In the Fall of 2008, the parish began work on frescos that were to be painted on the interior sanctuary walls. The work was done by Archpriest Fr. Theodore Jurewicz, from Erie, Pennsylvania, priest of The Church of The Nativity of Christ, a parish of the Old Believers within the ROCOR (Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia). He spent 6 weeks working on the Christ Pantocrator with the help of a group of helpers from Ohio, Oregon, Montana and few Romanian Orthodox nuns. Today, there is still much progress to be done, but inch by inch, the parish is covering the walls.

Lionni uses earth tones in his illustrations that are close to the actual colors of the objects found in nature. In his book Inch by Inch, for example, he uses realistic shades of brown and burnt orange in his collage of a robin, while the tree branches are shades of brown with dark green leaves. Mice are consistently found as characters in Lionni's books, such as the star character in Frederick and the title character in the Caldecott Honor Book Alexander and the Wind-Up Mouse. Lionni's illustrations have been compared to those of Eric Carle as both often employ animals, birds, insects, and other creatures to tell a story about what it is to be human.

Former Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi On February 22, 2011, Gaddafi gave a televised speech amidst violent social unrest against his government. In the speech (in Arabic), Gaddafi vowed to hunt down protesters "inch by inch, house by house, home by home, alleyway by alleyway [Arabic: زنقة زنقة prounouced in Libyan dialect as Zenga Zenga]." An Israeli journalist and musician, Noy Alooshe, was watching the speech and saw Gaddafi's strange dress and gesticulations as something out of a trance party. Using the natural beat of Gaddafi's words, Alooshe spent a few hours at his computer and using Auto-Tune technology set the speech to the music of "Hey Baby," a song by American rapper Pitbull featuring another American rap artist, T-Pain.

This film was released just a few months after D-Day, at a time when Allied forces were making steady advances. The scat singing part of the Stooges' audition for the agent includes parodies of Hideki Tōjō (Larry), Benito Mussolini (Curly), and Adolf Hitler (Moe). An obvious flub was left in the short at approximately 12:27 (the end of the "Niagara Falls" routine) as Larry misses the line "... step-by-step" going directly to "...inch by inch," while Moe says the line correctly. It is unclear why director Jules White left the mistake in, when using an alternate, correct, take would have taken only a few minutes, unless he felt that such a mistake would be consistent with the amateur entertainment that Howard, Fine, and Howard were supposed to be in the short.

The following year, on the evening of 1 June 1813 and while anchored in Chesapeake Bay, Surveyor was attacked by a Royal Navy boarding party of approximately 65 sailors and marines operating from the frigate HMS Narcissus which had entered the bay under cover of darkness. Closing on Surveyor in small boats with muffled oars to conceal their approach, British forces navigated away from the cutter's six-pound deck guns and boarded the ship. A fierce effort by Surveyor's crew to repel Royal Navy and Royal Marine boarders followed, described by British Lt John Crerie as one in which "her deck was disputed inch-by-inch" in a "gallant and desperate" defense. During the engagement, Royal Marine Captain Thomas Ford was mortally wounded by Travis in a cutlass duel.

A week's street fighting made the assailants masters of half the town, but Palafox's brother Luis Rebolledo de Palafox y Melci, 1st marqués de Lazán succeeded in forcing a passage into the city with 3,000 troops. Stimulated by the appeals of Palafox and of the fierce and resolute courage of the Spaniards, the inhabitants resolved to contest possession of the remaining quarters of Zaragoza inch by inch, and if necessary to retire to the suburb across the Ebro, destroying the bridge. The struggle, which was prolonged for nine days longer, resulted in the withdrawal of the French (14 August), after a siege which had lasted 61 days in all. Palafox then attempted a short campaign in the open country, but when Napoleon's own army entered Spain, and scattered one Spanish army after another in a few weeks, Palafox was forced back into Zaragoza, where he sustained a still more memorable second siege.

In the East End [of Berlin] Horst > Wessel opened up a route through which a brown storm tide poured in > unceasingly and conquered the area inch by inch. By the period 1929–30, the continual violence in Berlin between the street fighters of the Nazi Party and other extreme right-wing groups, and those of the Communist Party and other parties on the left, had become a virtual civil war the Prussian police were powerless to control. This physical violence was encouraged by Goebbels, the Nazi Gauleiter of Berlin, who had been given by Hitler the difficult task of establishing a reorganized Nazi presence in "Red Berlin" - a city sympathetic to the Communists and the Socialists - one that was under the firm control of the Nazi Party headquarters in Munich and was not controlled by the northern branch of the party under the Strasser brothers with their socialist leanings. Goebbels' violent approach was appreciated by Wessel, who preferred it to the official restraint he experienced as a member of the Bismarck Youth and the Viking League.

O'Bannon briefly trained for war in the Caribbean and sailed from Boston on 29 August 1942 for the Southwest Pacific, where the long and arduous Guadalcanal campaign had just begun. For over a year, the Navy—stretched thin to cover its worldwide commitments at a period when new ships were just beginning to join the fleet in any number—was to fight and fight again in the Solomon Islands in one of the most bitterly contested campaigns of history, wresting air and sea control from the Japanese and providing the Marine Corps and the Army with every possible support as they gained ground inch by inch on the myriad islands. Assigned the Destroyer Squadron 21 (DesRon 21), O'Bannon played a valiant part in these endeavors, winning a Presidential Unit Citation. Based at Nouméa, New Caledonia, O'Bannon first escorted the escort carrier on a run to Guadalcanal, where on 9 October, twenty Marines flew their Grumman F4F Wildcats off Copahees decks, desperately needed as reinforcements at beleaguered Henderson Field.
