The only things we can know for certain are that we can anticipate an epic Thrones season 8 battle between the humans and the White Walkers and that dozens of familiar faces will reappear this season, including the Lannister siblings (Tyrion, Cersei, and Jaime), accidentally incestuous lovers Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow, and the Stark siblings (Arya, Sansa, and Bran).

But there is little satirical distance when she evokes those who have been so integral to what she has become: the harried, disapproving mother; the smiling, incestuous uncle, both doting and terrifying; and the damaged brother — the "you" to whom much of her monologue is addressed — the idea of whom she clutches as if it were the only anchor in a raging sea.

Up until the first world war, the world was run by a collection of dynasties that possessed every human foible imaginable (from insanity to dwarfism to incestuous longings) and who spent their lives playing the game of thrones: forming dynastic alliances, sometimes even marrying their relatives, going to war over rival family claims to the throne and, above all, scheming to maximise their power.

Okay, so this one's a bit awkward: The last time these two met, it was at the end of the show's very first episode — when a much different Jaime pushed Bran out of a tower in an attempt to silence the kid about his incestuous relationship with Cersei, thus permanently paralyzing Bran and leading to events whose repercussions are still being felt on the show.

Dany, who returned from across the Narrow Sea at the season premiere, looks likely to claim the Iron Throne for her own this season but, by Bradley-West's theory, if anyone realized it out that Cersei or Dany partook in any incestuous activities, then they would be deemed unfit to rule and would have to let go of any claim to the Iron Throne.

In Season 4, Episode 4, one of Craster's sons (Craster is an abusive, incestuous wildling who made a pact to give up his sons to the White Walkers) is picked up by the Night King's men and taken to the mysterious, icy world of the Land of Always Winter, where he is given an extreme baby makeover and turned into an itty-bitty White Walker.

As my former colleague and current Salon TV critic Sonia Saraiya points out, Willimon has actually written himself into the show — in a completely bonkers way: The House of Cards universe, of course, displays the Underwoods in all kinds of polyamorous, incestuous and destructive sexual relations, including one at the end of [the most recent] season where Claire brings the speechwriter she's sleeping with straight from the bedroom to the kitchen table, for breakfast with Frank.
