In Justorum animae, Stanford set verses from the beginning of chapter 3 of the Book of Wisdom, "Justorum animae in manu Dei sunt, et non tanget eos tormentum malitiae. Vissi sunt oculis insipientium, illi autem sunt in pace" (But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and there shall no torment touch them. In the sight of the unwise they seemed to die, but they are in peace). In the Catholic missal, it is an offertory hymn on All Souls' Day.

As a spill-over of the Enlightenment, nonsecular beliefs expressed first by Quakers and then by Protestant evangelicals in Britain and the United States emerged. Rusper Priory, a priory of Benedictine nuns, was established in the parish c.1200. The Parish Church of St Mary Magdalene is a Grade I listed building with a good medieval tower. Rusper is the eponymous village in Five Years Hell in a Country Parish by Reverend Edward Fitzgerald Synnott, Rector of the place, published in 1920. Plagued by endless gossip-mongering, anonymous and begging letters and outrage from the wealthier of his flock at his assertion that all men are equal in the sight of God, he was subject to a serious spiteful campaign and eventually sent for trial for misconduct.

Vimes, along with family and several members of the Watch, travels to Koom Valley. He believes he is pursuing justice, but an astute troll king named Mr. Shine and a bright young grag named Bashfulsson know that Vimes is carrying the Summoning Dark, the quasi-demonic entity that wreaks vengeance on dwarves who have done evil in the sight of other dwarves. Vimes acquired the Summoning Dark when he touched the cursed door in the city mine, but his own internal watchman proves stronger than it is. Vimes soon discovers the real secret of Koom Valley: the trolls and dwarves did not intend war, but had originally come to Koom Valley to broker peace.

Ezekiel (watercolor circa 1896–1902 by James Tissot) Resh Lakish taught that great is repentance, for because of it, Heaven accounts premeditated sins as errors, as says, "Return, O Israel, to the Lord, your God, for you have stumbled in your iniquity." "Iniquity" refers to premeditated sins, and yet Hosea calls them "stumbling," implying that Heaven considers those who repent of intentional sins as if they acted accidentally. But the Gemara said that that is not all, for Resh Lakish also said that repentance is so great that with it, Heaven accounts premeditated sins as though they were merits, as says, "And when the wicked turns from his wickedness, and does that which is lawful and right, he shall live thereby." The Gemara reconciled the two positions, clarifying that in the sight of Heaven, repentance derived from love transforms intentional sins to merits, while repentance out of fear transforms intentional sins to unwitting transgressions.
