Conkle's Hollow The Hocking Hills is a deeply dissected area of the Allegheny Plateau in Ohio, primarily in Hocking County, that features cliffs, gorges, rock shelters, and waterfalls. The relatively extreme topography in this area is due to the Blackhand Sandstone (so named because of Native American graphics on the formation near Newark, Ohio), a particular formation that is thick, hard and weather-resistant, and so forms high cliffs and narrow, deep gorges.

Repeated flooding, especially in the late 19th century, severely damaged portions of the canal, and the railroad became the favored mode of transportation. In 1890, the canal was closed. Today, remnants of the canal basin are visible in places from a modern bikeway built on the old towpath. The former Lock #19 is preserved as a roadside park on the old US Route 33 in eastern Starr Township, west of Nelsonville in Hocking County.

There are two organizations particularly concerned with preserving the environment of the river and its adjacent lands, and with providing recreational access to the river: the Hocking River Commission, based in Athens County, Ohio, and the Friends of the Hocking River, based in Hocking County, Ohio. State Route 678 (SR 678) is a short north-south state highway located in southeast Ohio. Entirely situated within Laurel Township in Hocking County, SR 678 has its southern terminus at SR 374 approximately southwest of the hamlet of Gibisonville, and its northern terminus is at SR 180 nearly northeast of Gibisonville. SR 678 provides a shorter alternative for traffic using SR 374 en route from Hocking Hills State Park up to U.S. Route 33 (US 33) at Rockbridge, in conjunction with SR 180\.

State Route 678 begins at a T-intersection with SR 374 in Hocking County's Laurel Township. Starting out, the highway weaves its way in a northerly and easterly fashion, passing primarily through a forested landscape, with spaces of open grass and the occasional home also appearing alongside the highway. Turning to the east, SR 678 passes through the small hamlet of Gibisonville, where the highway is lined by a number of homes and a church. This town is also where SR 678 intersects Cream Ridge Road.

Along its way, SR 312 traverses a very small portion of Hocking County, cuts across the southwesternmost part of Perry County and enters into the southeastern corner of Fairfield County. SR 312 begins at a T-intersection with SR 93 in Hocking County's Falls Township at a location approximately northeast of Logan. The initial stretch of this state highway features it traveling to the northwest amidst a wooded landscape. After a distance of just , the route departs Hocking County and passes into Perry County.

Johnny Miler (August 10, 1910 – June 17, 1976), born John Miletich in Hocking, Monroe County, Iowa, was a professional boxer who competed in the 1932 Summer Olympics in the light-heavyweight class for the United States. In late 1932 or early 1933, Miler defeated future heavyweight champion Joe Louis in an amateur bout. Other notable fights included three professional bouts against "Slapsie" Maxie Rosenbloom that ended in two losses and a no decision, and a four round exhibition bout against Max Baer in 1934. Miler quit professional boxing in 1938.

The Edith Ross Mound is a Native American mound and archaeological site in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Ohio. Located near the village of Laurelville in Hocking County, the mound is a circular structure that measures in diameter at its base and high at the center. It is constructed primarily of earth, with large stones placed on various parts of the surface. Few changes have been made to the mound since white settlement of the region; a small depression in the northwestern corner may be the result of someone digging, but no significant damage was done.

The Karshner Mound is a Native American mound in the southeastern portion of the U.S. state of Ohio. Located near the village of Laurelville in Hocking County, it is one of Ohio's largest remaining burial mounds that has not been significantly damaged since white settlement. Measuring in diameter and high, it lies in the middle of a farm field, but it has never been cultivated, and vegetation on the mound has prevented erosion. Although no archaeological investigation has ever been carried out at the Karshner Mound, it is believed to have been constructed by people of the Adena culture, who inhabited the region between 1000 BC and AD 400.

SR 793 was a spur to the Southeastern Ohio Training Center (also called the Boys' Industrial School and the Fairfield School for Boys) in Hocking Township, Fairfield County to the city of Lancaster. The route started at the entrance to the training center and traveled north for to an interchange at South Memorial Drive, which carried US 33 during the time of SR 793's existence. SR 793 was designated in 1959 and had its jurisdiction transferred to Fairfield County and Lancaster City on May 23, 2006. The section of the route within the city is now only called South Broad Street while the former route outside of it is called Fairfield County Road 90.

Above the falls, the creek was very narrow and straight, forming the "bottle" neck. The Hockhocking enters the county from Good Hope Township in the northwest and then flows southwest, touches Marion Township, continues through Falls and Green Townships, and exits the county through northwestern Starr Township. The river is then in Athens County.
