Sihanaka culture traditionally adhered to a wide variety of fady, some of which are still respected to varying degrees by more traditional families to the present day. Many of their fady in the early 1900s were documented by historian Van Gennep. The most absolute fady and the only one that was seemingly practiced by all Sihanaka was a prohibition against working in a paddy field on Tuesdays; sub-groups among the Sihanaka also practiced other taboos associated with particular days of the week, such as not leaving the house or not cleaning floor mats on certain days. A fady was placed on consumption of any new or foreign products, including Western medicines.

The temple site is located in a paddy field in the Suematsu neighbourhood of what is now the city of Nonoichi, near the delta of the Tedori River. The actual name of the temple is unknown, and it does not appear in historical records, so the temple is named "Suematsu Haiji" after the location. From the Edo period, farmers uncovered a very large foundation stone, called the "Karato stone" and many fragments of roof tiles and pottery in the area, so the presence of a ruined temple what known for a long time. A Karato stone is the stone which supports the core pillar at the centre of a pagoda, and from the size of the stone unearthed, it is thought that this pagoda must have been very large, perhaps a seven-story tower.

Returning to the My Lai area at around 09:00 after refueling, the crew noticed that the people they had marked were now dead. Out in a paddy field beside a dike 200 meters south of the hamlet, they marked the location of a wounded young Vietnamese woman.

Achieving their objectives the Australians then spread out along the ridgeline, with A Company under Captain William Chitts on the left and B Company on the right commanded by Major George Thirlwell.
