In the late Jurassic, fragments of continental crust from the small content Cimmeria collided with Eurasia. Earlier, in the mid-Jurassic remnant oceanic crust formed ophiolites along the coast of Cimmeria. The oceanic crust of the Neotethys ocean subducted between the newly compounded Cimmerian-Eurasia continent, but obducted some more ophiolites onto the edge of the Cimmerian crust. Thessalonians was formed as a collaborative project in 1986 by keyboardist Kim Cascone and percussionist Larry Thrasher. One proposed model theorizes that the Farallon plate underwent subduction and imbrication beneath the North American plate to form the Challis Arc. Another model suggests that intracontinental rifting and igneous activity between the Pacific and North American plates formed the Challis arc. By definition, a volcanic arc is formed via subduction, so the Challis Arc's naming as a volcanic arc is a matter of debate among geologists.
