Ottava rima is a rhyming stanza form of Italian origin. Originally used for long poems on heroic themes, it later came to be popular in the writing of mock-heroic works. Its earliest known use is in the writings of Giovanni Boccaccio. The ottava rima stanza in English consists of eight iambic lines, usually iambic pentameters.

The metre of most poetry of the Western world and elsewhere is based on patterns of syllables of particular types. The first, Francis Gary Powers, the pilot of a U-2 spy plane that was shot down in 1960, was exchanged for a convicted Soviet spy, Rudolf Abel. In December 2000, Astakhov surprised the court hearing the case by delivering his closing arguments in verse. He read out a 12-page lyric he had composed in iambic pentameters, urging the court to acquit Pope. The court was not impressed by Astakhov's poetry skills and Pope received a 20-year jail sentence; he was later pardoned by Vladimir Putin and was flown back to US.

In England, the poems of the 15th and early 16th centuries are in a wide variety of meters. Thomas Wyatt, for example, often mixed iambic pentameters with other lines of similar length but different rhythm. Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey, on the other hand, used a strict ten- syllable line that was similar to the Old French line, with its pause after the fourth syllable, but typically had a regular iambic pattern, and had many of the modern types of variation. Thomas Sackville, in his two poems in the Mirror for Magistrates, used a similar line but with few caesuras.

Delyric Oracle spent her early years traveling between continents often, she has said that Tupac Shakur and KRS One raised her, while Hip Hop culture in one country to the next was the only cultural norm she knew. Delyric wound up coming back to Arizona on a semi-permanent basis a few years ago, feeling "called" to the Hip Hop scene. This is where an experience not specified took her to "hell and back" with clear vision and insight. Hence the name, which was taken from Delphic Oracle {also see: Oracle of Delphi, Oracle of Apollo who was said to have had visions gifted by the Gods that came out in iambic pentameters}.

The poetical narrative of Don Juan (1819–24) is told in sixteen thousand lines, arranged in seventeen cantos, written in ottava rima (eighth rhyme); each stanza is composed of eight iambic pentameters, with the couplet rhyme scheme of ab ab ab cc. The ottava rima uses the final rhyming couplet as a line of humour, to achieve a rhetorical anticlimax by way of an abrupt transition, from a lofty style of writing to a vulgar style of writing. In the example passage from Don Juan, canto I, stanza 1, lines 3–6, the Spanish name Juan is rhymed with the English sound for the words true one. Therefore Juan is spoken in English, as , which is the recurring pattern of enunciation used for pronouncing foreign names and words in the orthography of English.
