Familiar species include Crassula ovata (jade plant or friendship tree), Kalanchoe blossfeldiana (florists' kalanchoe), Sempervivum (houseleek), Monanthes, Umbilicus (pennywort), Bryophyllum, Echeveria and Cotyledon.

As a consequence, many subspecies, varieties, and forms were described, without well-defined limits between them. As a second consequence, there is a high frequency of natural hybrids in this genus and the possibility of back-crossings of these. However, more or less 40 species can be individualized in the whole area of the genus, but there are many more local populations, without nomenclatural valour but sometimes with their own characters. Sempervivum kosanini In the Alps, for example, the most distributed species are S. tectorum (common houseleek, sometimes called S. alpinum), S. montanum (mountain houseleek) and S. arachnoideum (cobwebbed houseleek), each one with several subspecies.

Sedum is the Latin name of the adjoining genus, Sempervivum, houseleek. It is derived from sedare, to appease, to tranquillize, since the houseleek cultivated on housetops was supposed to take away the thunder, or probably because the crushed leaves used in plasters have a sedative action.

Sempervivum tectorum (common houseleek) Morphologically, they are similar to the genera Jovibarba, Aeonium, Greenovia, Aichryson, and Monanthes, occurring mainly in Macaronesia (Azores, Canary Islands, Cape Verde, Madeira). Some botanists include some or all of these genera within a wider interpretation of Sempervivum, particularly Jovibarba.

The Apollo caterpillar a velvety blue black with small orange spots. These caterpillars feed on stonecrop (Sedum species, mainly Sedum telephium, Sedum album, Sedum rupestre and Sedum ropsea), Hylotelephium caucasicum and houseleek (Sempervivum species). When the caterpillar is fully grown it will pupate on the ground, forming a loose cocoon from which the adult butterfly emerges following metamorphosis.

Sempervivum altum is a species of flowering plant in the family Crassulaceae, native to the Caucasus Mountains. Like other members of the houseleek genus, it grows succulent leaves in rosettes. The rosettes of S. altum are 1–5 cm across, and the leaves are pubescent or pilose. The flowers are pink edged with white, with yellow anthers, growing on a stem 30–40 cm tall.

Shepherd's hut For centuries, the native karst vegetation has resisted the bora and drought on its shallow soil. Biodiversity includes sub-Mediterranean vegetation, with xerophilic Illyrian species and Central European vegetation. Typical vegetation includes the common houseleek, wild asparagus, mountain anemone, wild peony, and hellebore; crocuses are found in the Lipica area. Cowslips and other high-altitude plants grow on the slopes of Orleška Draga.

More local are the yellow-flowered S. wulfenii and S. grandiflorum, and the beautiful limestone houseleek (S. calcareum). More rare are S. dolomiticum and mainly S. pittonii. S. pittonii is a small yellow-flowered jewel growing only on two mountains slopes near Kraubath in the Mur valley in Austria and is very threatened. On roofs or old walls S. tectorum can be found, more or less wild, very far out of its natural area.

On the North and South Coronados there are sea dahlias, various species of cactus, wild cucumber and houseleek. There are colonies of birds that nest on the islands and can be spotted in the nearby waters like gulls, cormorants, pelicans, storm-petrels, and alcids. The Coronado Islands have the largest known colony of the rare Scripps's murrelet. Pilón de Azúcar, better known as Middle Rock, is host to the northernmost nesting colony of brown boobies on the west coast of North America.

The name Sempervivum has its origin in the Latin semper ("always") and vivus ("living"), because this perennial plant keeps its leaves in winter and is very resistant to difficult conditions of growth. The common name "houseleek" is believed to stem from the traditional practice of growing plants on the roofs of houses to ward off fire and lightning strikes. Some Welsh people still hold the old folk belief that having it grow on the roof of the house ensures the health and prosperity of those who live there. The plant is not closely related to the true leek, which belongs to the onion family.

Hum is the growing place of many plant species, especially subalpine ones, the remains of the Pleistocene vegetation, like the hirsute rhododendron, yellow veronica, primula, mouse-ear hawkweed, Clusius gentian, houseleek, pink, etc. On the sunny side and in light deciduous forests, thermophile plants adapted to dry grounds can be found, for example daphne, smoke tree, holy grass, sessile oak, Solomon's seal, stonecrop, heath and others. Beside these, the following members of the other flore do grow in this region: butcher's broom, the lily of Carniola, black hellebore, honeysuckle, hacquetia, cyclamen, euphorbia, milkwort, helleborine, hart's tongue fern, cranesbill redbrown and many others. Buttercup is the endemic plant of Hum, and quite a lot of plants have been protected there like Clusius gentian, primula, daphne, butcher's broom, and holly.
