Two documentary series followed: Cathouse: The Series premiered in 2005, and Cathouse 2: Back in the Saddle appeared in 2007. At the end of the 19th century, many Chinese people called Big Timber, Montana home. According to the Billings Gazette, Chinese artifacts dating from the late 1800s to the 1930s were found. William Manuel "Bill" Johnson (August 10, 1872 - December 3, 1972), was an American jazz musician who played banjo and double bass; he is considered the father of the "slap" style of double bass playing. In New Orleans, he played at Lulu White's legendary house of prostitution, with the Eagle Band, and with the Excelsior Brass Band. Johnson claimed to have started "slapping" the strings of his bass (a more vigorous technique than the classical pizzicato) after he accidentally broke his bow on the road with his band in northern Louisiana in the early 1910s. Other New Orleans string bass players picked up this style, and spread it across the country with the spread of New Orleans Jazz.

A small black business district developed on Fifth Street, starting in 1884 when Linsey Pitts, a former slave from Missouri and a Civil War veteran, opened his saloon at 120 E. Fifth St. He had previously worked as a laborer and barber. By 1886, Mattie Burke, who ran a combination saloon and house of prostitution (serving both blacks and whites), moved her business to 124 E. Fifth from Front Street (in the 1870s, about a half dozen black women ran prostitution businesses on Front Street and on the blocks east of Brady Street downtown). In 1888 a city directory described her business as a restaurant, which would have complemented Pitts' saloon. Pitts' business did well.

Picasso never liked the title, however, preferring "las chicas de Avignon", but Salmon's title stuck.Richardson 1991, 19 Leo Steinberg labels his essays on the painting after its original title. In 1910, women won the right to vote in Washington state, and progressive Seattle citizens quickly launched a campaign to recall the then-mayor, Hiram Gill, who, it was revealed, was a partial owner of what was to be the nation's largest house of prostitution. Epiphany congregation member George W. Dilling was among the leaders of the recall movement and in a special election held in the spring of 1911, Gill was recalled and Dilling elected to replace him. In the following decade, including during WW I, Epiphany's congregation expanded and the church also served the Madrona-Denny Blaine neighborhoods as a community center and polling place. With the return to peacetime, Epiphany continued to be a growing parish, adding a residence also designed by Ellsworth Storey – the rectory – for the parish clergyman and his family.
