Ralph "Toddy" Giannini (1917-1996), known to many as "Hot Toddy," was a member of the 1940 All-American basketball team representing Santa Clara University. He and his other teammates were known as the "Magicians of the Maplewood". In 1940 Giannini headed the All-American all star team to a 44-42 defeat of the Harlem Globetrotters before a crowd of 22,000 fans in Madison Square Garden. Ralph "Toddy" Giannini was also inducted into the San Francisco Prep Hall of fame as well as Santa Clara University's Hall of Fame.

Thelma Alice Todd (July 29, 1906 – December 16, 1935) was an American actress and businesswoman often referred to by the nickname "The Ice Cream Blonde", as well as "Hot Toddy". Appearing in around 120 feature films and shorts between 1926 and 1935, she is best remembered for her comedic roles opposite ZaSu Pitts and in films such as Marx Brothers' Monkey Business and Horse Feathers and a number of Charley Chase's short comedies. She co-starred with Buster Keaton and Jimmy Durante in Speak Easily. She also had roles in several Wheeler and Woolsey and Laurel and Hardy films, the last of which (The Bohemian Girl) featured her in a part that was truncated by her suspicious death in 1935 at the age of 29.

He was educated at Lorain High School in Lorain, Ohio, United States, where he was a member of the National Honors Society, the student senate, the school newspaper staff (Hi-Y) and the chorus. During World War II he served in the Merchant Marine from October 1942 to 1946. By 1949, he formed a successful orchestra which is credited with re-popularizing the Glenn Miller "sound," and which made many records, among them "Singing Winds", "Rag Mop" and "Hot Toddy." The Ralph Flanagan band was managed by Herb Hendler, an RCA A&R; man who had signed Glenn Miller to his final record contract before Miller's fatal plane crash in the English Channel during World War II. It was Hendler who had encouraged Flanagan to adopt the Miller sound that led to his success.

Herb Hendler (June 17, 1918 – October 16, 2007) was an American record producer and lyricist. He was director of A&R; and sole producer at RCA Victor Records in the 1940s. He produced Perry Como's first hit records and signed Glenn Miller to his final contract. He wrote the lyrics for Rosemary Clooney's first hit, "The Kid's a Dreamer (The Kid from Fool's Paradise)," later a hit for Tony Bennett; also Johnnie Ray's “Coffee and Cigarettes,” Nat King Cole's "The Magic Tree" and "Hot Toddy," a hit for Ralph Flanagan, Ted Heath and Julie London, recorded by some eighty other artists.
