Born in Cranston, Rhode Island, he received his A.B. from Princeton University in 1943 and his law degree from Harvard University in 1949. He was in private practice from 1949 to 1957, when he joined the staff of the Lawyers Co-operative Publishing Company in Rochester, New York, editing the Lawyer's Edition of the United States Reports and the United States Supreme Court Digest. He was assistant reporter of decisions for the court from 1973 to 1979 and oversaw the transition from hot lead to computer typesetting.

Rice arrived in Santa Cruz in 1974 to study with San Francisco printer Jack Stauffacher and poet/printer William Everson at the University of California, Santa Cruz. On November 28, 1909, Robertson was badly burned in an accident at Celtic Park, in Queens, New York when a ladle of hot lead exploded in his face. Robertson was preparing to pour the molten lead for a shot which was to be used in the shot put by Martin Sheridan and John Flanagan at the annual field day of the Second Regiment of the Irish Volunteers. The shot was determined to be a few ounces under weight, so a hole was bored in it and the lead was poured inside to bring the weight to the required mark.
